Can anyone who has recently returned from Negril let me know what the exchange rate was locally. My local bank only wants to give me 80-1, whereas a national currency exchange shows the current rate at 91-1. Thanks in advance.

Click on "home" just below the Negril.com logo on top of this page. There is a handy little window in the lower right hand corner of the home page with a converter.
wERE THERE A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THE RATE WAS 90-1
We got 87 -1 I think at the Bourbon beach Cambio
80-1 was the worst I got last week doing a conversion on a dinner bill at a small roadside stand. Most places were doing 85-1 if I didnt have enough JMD to cover the bill. You can definitely do better than your local bank.
Here's a widget that is as close as it gets.
I've checked it in the morning and gone to the ATM and it's right on the button except for fees if you have any

Just got back Sat Dec 1st. Bourbon Beach cambio was giving 88 - 1 for CAD & USD. I was last there Fri/ 30th.
So would most of you bring cash to exchange, or take the transaction fee hit on your debit card?
I brought about 300 down, and then did debit card after that. I think the Intl Charge is $4 on top of the ATM fee which was anywhere from 2-3 dollars.
If you withdrawal in JA you're really not ahead or behind if you take out 10,000 JA at a time given the Cambio fee (which is, they give you an exchange slightly lower than the actual rate)
The bank down there is Scotia Bank. For some reason, my ATM card did not get along with Scotia, so I had to go to a different ATM, but some banks have agreements waiving the intl Fees. I would research
Scotia Bank also will not charge International transaction fees if you are a Bank Of America accont holder.
Just changed money at the FX Trader in the Sunshine plaza yesterday. The rate was 89.3 for Canadian and a little less for US. The funny thing is I checked the money exchange at the airport and they were giving 78.3J for a Canadian dollar. What a ripoff. 11 Jamaican dollars difference. That's 1100J per 100 Canadian folks. Almost 6 beers at Sunbeach.
Ya, mon, need that dollar to beer converter wiget.Quote:

If you scroll down on any of the main Negril.com pages (HOME | HOTELS | DINING | TRANSPORTATION | THINGS TO DO | ENTERTAINMENT | FORUM | SPAS | WEDDING | SHOPPING | MARKET | SPECIALS) there is a currency converter near the bottom of each of the pages!
There is also the current weather shown as well - Negril.com is a one stop shop! (grin)
My apologies in advance if this has been answered elsewhere.
I will be staying at Couples Negril in April, is there a place near by to exchange money?
exchange rate this afternoon at the Cambio downtown. USD to JD 89(and change) to 1
Regards,
Bob
After last years beating up of the J"s while in Jamaica, This year where taking mostly travelers checks to cash in for J's. Also US dollars in 5,10 & 20's. When you buy something figure out which is best J's or US dollars. My debit card it is for SOS only way to many fees . Limo Mon Soon Come
The China Mon shop across the street from Scotia bank(water side) offers up a fair rate if you also want to tie in a beer stop for a case or two of Red Stripe as well. He gave me 87-1 when the cambio was 88-1.
Jamerican1.
All Couples resorts have a money change window. They are currently offering 86J$ to 1 USD. Far from the best rate, but good enough for the convenience. I am at CSA now. Everything else is a cab ride for you to get J's.
You may already know this, but..... NEVER change money on the street. Guys will come at you waving money and claiming they will give you a rate of $90. Don't get suckered.
The only place I know in the world to use travellor checks is in Jamaica you get the same rate at cambios and dont have to carry a lot of cash. The rate was 88 for US at both the Banmark and one in front of Bourbon Beach last week.
Great info. Thanks to all! 9 days and counting!
I just got 89.55 at the fx trader by the Hi Lo.
