I have been collecting Negril Guides for many years and will post some covers in this thread later. I havn't got a new Negril Guide in 2 years. Has the chamber of commerce stopped publishing them. How far back does your collection go?

we got one in our room at ROOMS last feb, soon come
This is the most current guide I have. It was still circulating in Feb 2012 when I was last in Negril where ever I asked for a guide. It is dated 2008. Does anyone of the boardies have a newer one or have you seen a newer one? They are wonderful snapshots of Negril at any moment in timeAttachment 20801. The guides began to be published by The Negril Chamber of Commerce in 1985 I believe ( the chamber started in 1983). The earliest one I have is dated 1987Attachment 20802. It advertises many businesses that have ceased to be that will make you nostalgic for earlier times such as this advertisement for Errol's recording studioAttachment 20803. I dont know how many people remember Errol or his mixes. That is a whole other thread which I would love to see...recorded music purchased in Negril over the years. I will be posting other guides and older ads in coming days. I hope that other boardies will help fill in the blanks and share their guide and the info in them.
Whats a cassette?
there are 2012 guides in the hotels. just picked one up at CCLP.
Some time in the past: I believe negrilgail of the Tree-House used to ship them for a donation....anyone remember?
Here is the 1990 guide coverAttachment 20816
It includes an ad for Airways International limited with flights from Negril to Mo Bay,Port Antonio,Ocho and Tinson Pen Kingston. This airline predates the current Timair
The 1992 guide Attachment 20817is the first of my collection to mention the NEW Sunshine Village shopping center and the New HI-LO Supermarket. No longer was the SAV-A-Dollar the only supermarket in town.
Does anyone out there have 1985,1986, 1988,1989 or 1991 Negril guides? Please contact me if you do....I have multiples of many dates to trade.
here is the 1994-1995 Negril Guide. It marks the first time that the inside front cover advertises the Coral Seas Hotels which included the previously unaffiliated Gold Nuggett which previously always occupied the inside front coverAttachment 20891. You know these resorts today as
Gold Nuggett= Coral Seas Garden
Coral Seas Beach=Sunshine on the Beach
Coral Seas Cliff=Sunshine on the Cliff
The 1996 guide is the first with full color photography for the coverAttachment 20892 and the first guide to have an advertisement for the Pickled Parrot....I miss that place
Oh man I miss the Pickled Parrot too!
Can you scan the ad? Would love to see it
These are great, thanks for sharing!
I am glad that there are folks out there who find this thread informative and fun.
The Pickled Parrot could have been right out of Casablanca....I dont rememAttachment 20893ber the beach location only the cliff.
I am happy to oblige Marley
I don't remember the beach location either but we found the cliff location on our first trip in 1999 and we spent almost all day every day there
That was where I made my first cliff jump too
Oh the memories!
Cool to see the ad, I was hoping there were pictures in it :)
Al and Lulu,
Gail used to mail them for a donation of US$10.

Pickled Parrot, oh the memories of helping all those coeds in their teenie weenie bikinis up the ladder....
:)
Enjoy,
VVHT
Does anybody on this board rember the Picled Parrot on the beach. I wonder if it ever opened
Was not open long enough for anyone to remember, had head about it, believe it was on the morass side, bnewb and Rob would know better.
awesome.......
was looking at one yesterday here in Negril.....not sure what year it was....a year or two old.....
Cool Runnings, Marko
From the '96 guide an ad for the Rock Cliff Hotel...had a very fine restaurant as I recall. When last I was in Negril it was still in a very sorry state of disrepair (although not yet as bad as T-Water). The Rock Cliff would certainly be a candidate for The Travel Channel's Hotel Impossible.Attachment 20916
the Pickled Parrot was open for a few years,it was where 23-7 was on the beach
From the 1994/1995 Guide Here is an ad for Mariners...they only were on the cliffs at the time
Attachment 20917
Here is a blow up from that ad....Does anyone remember the wonderful ships hull bar they had there. I was told that following Hurricane Andrew that"the sea took it"

I would love to see whatever you care to post. When you reply click on the the picture frame icon to the right of the font and emoticon icons. I will be in Negril from the 7 of Feb thru the 16 th so I can't view it. If you still have trouble send them up me at negrilal@yahoo.com and I will put up whatever you send. Do you have any others?
The cover of the 1997 guide is of the Royal Palm Reserve. I believe that the plan to harvest peat from the morass for energy was put to rest permanently and the environment was protected as manifested in the Reserve.Attachment 21170.
Between when the 96 guide went to press and when the 97 guide went to press the Pickled Parrot advertisement dropped mention of the beach location.
Attachment 21171
And the most interesting milestone I would think for boardies is the first mention of the internet in the guides. It had already become much easier to get a phone call out by 1997 but a new era was just beginning for Negril. URL's were so unfamiliar to the publishers that a typo was not picked up. You all will recognize the domain. Would love to here about this early era from Rob on this thread.

Great stuff! I'm really enjoying this thread. I love reading about places that existed before my time.
I'm guessing that this free guide is different than hardcover guides found in hotel rooms that say "PROPERTY OF HOTEL - DO NOT REMOVE". (I once got billed $50 because my wife took a Puerto Rico guide book from a hotel in San Juan.) I'm surprised I haven't seen these free guides around.
i booked my trip for feb 26 through Negrilonestop.com and i posted a photo of myself standing in front of Jennie Westmoreland's "Jennie's Favourite Cakes" in 1981. That was the first time i had been to Negril and was the first time I had sampled the "Special Cake " for 50 cents US
Many thanks to Scant for posting an earlier guide then I have ever seen. If anyone else out there has any guides that havnt been posted yet, particularly the ones I listed earlier in the thread as not part of my collection PLEASE post. I will be continuing to post from my collection...I just havnt gotten around to it yet.
To Mike D...these are free and not like the hard cover books in some hotels. I havnt seen anything newer then 2008. There was a sighting mentioned of a guide in Rooms, but no date was mentioned. Here's a few more scans and brief commentary.
The 2001 guide:color photo on the cover of a fairly wide depth of beachAttachment 22128
From this guide I also copied some non-advertising infoAttachment 22129Attachment 22130
The 2002 guide cover is a color photo enhanced with paint credits to Janos Beyer and Roberta Raigh Pryor

Here is a photo of the Pickled Parrot bar
Attachment 22132
If anybody wants to make a fun T-shirt for boardies I would be happy to share a high res scan of the Picked Parrot Logo
Attachment 22133
The most recent one I have is from 2011
