Sim Card Question on buying
I just purchased a new quad-band ipro phone on ebay. I can handle 2 sim cards... Why would I need 2 sim cards? My main question is where can I buy a sim card -- going to be stopping at the FX traders & mega mart in MoBay before hitting Negril. I'd like to have the phone working before leaving MoBay. What do I need to do? Thanks BTW, the phone has "analog TV" feature -- what is that - anyone know?

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
you can use your regular sim card plus you can insert the one from digicel or lime and you will have no issues. you can stop at the digicel store less than 10mins away from the airport. having dual sim cards prevents the need for bringing multiple phones.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
Thanks Kaycee -- so, I'll buy a sim card specific to Jamaica, plus I can also put my sim card from my ATT backberry into this phone? How much should I expect to pay for a sim card and minutes in Jamaica?
-
Re: Sim Card Question on buying
no problem! that is correct! i would say you should be able to purchase a sim card for less than $20usd. Once you get both sim cards in your phone, the at&t service and digicel will work simultaneously.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
sounds great -- thanks again

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
Did you unlock your phone that you purchased? It will need to be unlocked before it will work. Also, the sim at Digicel was I believe $850j when I bought one last year, so about $10 US.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
it said "unlocked" on the ebay description -- does the sim card come with any minutes?
-
Re: Sim Card Question on buying
You should be good with your phone. As far as does it come with any minutes the answer is no. You have to purchase the minutes and I would recommend just purchasing the local plan unless you plan on spending a ton of time calling internationally. The phone shop will get you all set up once you pay for your sim card.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
have to agree with booger just buy local plan start with 1000. buy more as needed.I've been burnt with a ton of international minutes and no local.whats the deal with that?
-
Re: Sim Card Question on buying
if its unlocked you should be fine. you do have to buy minutes, they are not expensive either.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
A Lime sime card is only $3.33 US. Much cheaper than Digicel.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
So if I have a cell-phone in JA already and I buy one of these phones can I just take the SIM card out of my JA phone and use the new one down there?? The JA cellie is getting a little long in the tooth, tons of people have my number though and I don't want to mess with getting a new number when I get down there, the number stays with the SIM not the phone, right??
I guess I could just go to the store in JA and buy a new phone and let the good folks transfer the SIM over for me, but it is 2013 (or it will be soon!!!) and I feel like I should be able to figure this stuff out.
Thanks!!!

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
Pine Tree John...you have to enter two different codes on your phone...one code sets up the international plan & another code sets up local calls.
M&M...you can easily transfer your sim card to a new phone. You just pop open the back of the phone...but of course the Digicel people will be happy to do this for you.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
ok -- another question then -- if I get a Lime SIM, would the phone pick up Digicel towers, or does it work there that way. Sorta like in the US, if I have a Verizon phone, it won't hit AT&T cell towers -- is it the same with Lime and digicel? Thanks
-
Re: Sim Card Question on buying
Lime uses lime towers digicel uses digicel.. both have great call coverage though

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
I just made up my mind.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
thanks all -- does anyone know where the lime store is in MoBay? I'm stopping at Mega Mart in Mobay on the way to Negril -- would like to have the phone working before hitting Negril. Thanks

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
should be less than 10mins from the airport...its on the "hipstrip"...your driver should know exactly where its at.

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
Is there a Lime or Digicel outlet in the airport? If not, where can you get a SIM card in Negril and which one would people recommend - Lime or Digi? I am familiar with both as I have a SIM card for Barbados and for Trinidad but wondered what the preference is in JA...

Re: Sim Card Question on buying
I havent seen one in the airport but you never know...the hipstrip is very close by. I recommend going to the digicel store there but lime is cheaper.

There is a Lime desk right in Mega Mart. I bought my phone there the last week of November. My driver had to ask to get someone to call a representative over to the desk, but all worked out. It's just a small counter...you turn right when entering the store and go past the Scotiabank ATM. Got a great deal too, $999j for their cheapest Samsung phone, including SIM and $100j in minutes. I was able to purchase an additional $100j minutes at a little store on the beach close to my hotel. I called home about 4 times and called and texted locally and still had minutes left over. Lime to Lime and Lime to Canada or US is only $2.99j per minute, no need to buy an international plan. I paid less than $15 for the phone and calling while there, can't be beat!!! (I believe I did catch a special though).

In Negril, the Lime store is above the Value Master store at the roundabout. Digicel store is in the Burger King strip mall across the street.
