If you can sleep on a plane...take the Red Eye.
There is no painless route to Negril from SFO. I take the red eye to Miami, have a 4-8 hour layover there and arrive in Negril about noon. Not nice but the best I can find for the price. BTW, it's American Airlines.
Thanks. Hopefully we can nail something down soon!
Hi,
I fly American, leave SFO at six am, go thru Miami and arrive Mobay around seven thirty in the evening. I like to route home thru Dallas Ft. Worth, I find customs a little less painful then Miami.
I just can't handle the red eyes anymore.
Good luck finding the flight you like!
Thanks! good advice about coming back via DFW. I noticed some via CHI too, but don't want to risk a snow delay.
Any reason not to connect in Atlanta? We'll be flying out of San Diego but back into SFO and most flights I've seen for both ways go through Atlanta instead of Miami or DFW. The flights have been found on normal fare sights so are you guys going to the airline directly?
Atlanta is one of the busiest most congested airports in the east...
How about US Airways thru Charlotte? Layover usually around 1 1/2 hours and it is a red eye as well.
maxwell87 - I used to live in Atlanta so no experience going through it..however, I understand there's a new intl term there so maybe it is ok.
The r/t fares I'm getting for SFO to MBJ right now TODAY are 566 for a red eye that goes sfo-miami- mbj and returns mbj-dfw-sfo
There are other options like going through Chicago and Charlotte...Have lived in Chi too, so know about snow delays
and 2 years ago was stuck in Charlotte overnight in a snow storm flying fro MoBay back to Minneapolis....ya, I've lived a few places.
So I tend to avoid weather delay places as much as possible.
Booger, see above paragraph :)
SanFranJanet is right. There is no painless route. I agree that SFO to Miami and then Miami to MoBay is the best bet. I did that flight twice and it was a piece of cake compared to the stop over at Atlanta and Charlotte. Miami is close to Jamaica so that flight is really short. We always take the red eye. I'm able to sleep on a plane but Markus isn't. It's never really comfortable but it's cheaper...
Markus prefers a stop over in Atlanta because it has a smoking room but that room is like a gas chamber. Enter at your own risk.
The flight to Jamaica from San Francisco is really a drag. It's all worth it though the minute you arrive.
Thanks for the info...now to scramble for places to stay. My wife's boss told her yesterday that if she's going to take a vacation it has to be in January...ugh. I hate this last minute stuff. Plus need an animal/house sitter too...geez
Well January is high season so place to stay will be more, but it is doable. Take a night flight if possible you get there in the day time at least. Where you have your layover depends on what airline you fly or prefer. Good luck and book soon some tickets need a little advance before booking. Have fun!
Thanks for the info everyone. I looked at fares again recently and it seems like the cheapest flights go through Charlotte, not Atlanta like I thought. Most flights for my situation are about $700 rt right now, hoping they drop in the next month or month and a half.
I start from L.A. and it's a similar route. I've done the red eye many times and also the early morning flights but these days I like most the mid morning flight, leave 9 a.m., short layover in Miami, then arrive at night. It's worth it to pay a little extra and have a little less time on the island your first day -- especially if you re going ten days or more. If only six or seven nights, you need to consider red eye ....
