Second thoughts about booking negril
Hi I am new to this forum but not new to traveling to Jamaica. This could be my 5th time returning to Negril and quite frankly after reading some of these post I am sorry to say I might have made the wrong vacation choice. Virus, water pollution, visitors being chopped up, doesn't sound like paradise to me. Add to that the beach errosion at the Tree House where I am staying and the fact that Negril has never been a "good food" destination. You eat to survive in Negril and settle for what you get. The places mentioned in one of the post covers some of the better places to eat but by no means "great food". If I want great dining then I go to Saint Martin. I guess if your going there to drink booze and smoke weed than nothing matters but unfortunately I'm not one of these people. I love the beauty of the beach and cliffs, the Jamaican people and their music and that's what keeps me returning. At this point right now I can't change my plans cause I'll be there next week and hoping for the best. A healthy safe trip with many beautiful sunsets is what I hope to bring back home with me. I just hope this isn't my last trip to what I once considered a beautiful location.

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
Oh My...Please simmer down oceanbeachsky. There are virus everywhere on the planet, including right there in your home town. Just be sure to wash your hands regularly and maybe bring some extra hand sanitizer. The ocean water is fine and just as clear as can be. If you are worried about the tap water just drink bottled water. I just returned and I can say that I drank tap water and I survived just fine.
The chopping was a altercation between 'family' members and did NOT involve a tourist. Just be sure to keep your head about you (hahah,no pun intended) and you will be fine.
As far as there being no good food in Negril all that I can say to that is WHAT?!?!?! One of my favorite parts of Negril is the food. Try, Kuyaba, Ivans, 3 Dives, just to name a few.
Just Chill out and enjoy the ride!!!

My wife and I will be going back to JA in Feb for our 5th trip to the island. One of the things we are really looking forward to is the fanstastic food we will be able to partake in. I'm not sure what kind of "great food" your looking for but if you can't find it in JA your not "looking" very hard. As far as the comment about drinking and smoking I am really not sure what that has to do with liking "good food" or anything else for that matter. Respect :)

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
Sounds like you might be on the wrong board. Impossible not to have fun in Negril unless you go in with a bad taste in your mouth from the start. If you like ST Expensive so much why don't you peddle your ass off that way next trip. Leave the good vibes for people who know how to have fun. BAD FOOD I want to punch you through my computer!!!!!

WOW! Could I take your place....

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
If you have been to Negril in the past 5 years and enjoyed yourself, this time should be no different. I think that the food is quite a bit better than "survival", but then again I'm into local people food, not high end dining. And like you , do not drink or smoke weed. However there is a lot more to do in the Negril area than sit on a beach. I always am on the lookout for new things to do and see and get bored quickly sitting on the beach. Try some of this stuff for something different and memorable while in Negril.
Friday or Saturday route taxi to the Sav market, take your camera.
Mayfiled Falls
Rockland Bird Sacntuary
Walk up into Red Ground especially some of the samll off shoot roads. Amazing who you might meet.
Try to hook up with Markie the cave man in Red Ground for a fairly cheap tour of a great cave we used to play in back in the 70's.
Horseback riding and swimming with the horses at Rhodes Hall Plantation.
Take a route taxi for the Friday or Saturday market in Lucea.
Route taxi day trip to Half Moon Beach just to be alone.
Check to see if Discovery Falls is open, not far from Negril.
Respectfully check out a Sunday church service.
Notice I didn't even mention any of the normal stuff that tourist try to get done but never seem to get around to?
Regards,
Bob

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
Ummm ....
Murders happen everywhere. In my hometown in the U.S. there have been 4 murders just this year - fortunately, nobody has reason to murder ME, either here or in Jamaica.
Viruses occur everywhere .. especially when people travel on airplanes and take them along - it happens in St. Martin too. One time I went to Jamaica with a cold, and I came back, all better!!
I've been to St. Martin/St Maarten, beautiful island (not as beautiful as Jamaica though) ... Drugs & booze are prevalent in SM too - but the people are not as friendly or genuine. One need not partake in drugs or booze if they choose not.
The food I had in St. Martin was 'okay' (save a little French Bistro on the St. Martin side, where the pastries were VERY good) .... BUT, the food in Jamaica is PHENOMENAL!!! If there was no other reason to go to Jamaica, I would be going back JUST for the food. SERIOUSLY, sometimes I look for flights just for a weekend trip to Jamaica, just to fill that hankering for Jamaican cuisine that I have found no other place in the world!!! Gimme ackee & saltfish, roast yam, callilou, saur sop, naseberry, jerk chicken from Scotchies, oxtail soup w/ dumplings, crabcakes, festival, patties, curry goat from 3 Dives .... gimme, gimme, gimme, please oh please .... nothing beats Jamaican cuisine ... with or without the munchies :)

Okay, I've had a great giggle at the responses here but that video was HILARIOUS!! Thanks treefrog, lmao!!

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
I just figured it out - This is like when the college boys used to write phoney letters to Dear Abby trying to get her to bite on them or maybe the old Penthouse Forum letters " You will not believe what happened when the Hot neighbour next door asked me to check her Air Conditioning....!' There are many more people who have discovered Negril & return year after year or in GerryG123's & Pool Guy's case month after month. Pick another Island and complain about the sun being too hot or the water too cool. You can't please all the people all the time !

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
Bwhahahahaaa that video is perfect!!!

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
I have to say I went to Negril for 8-9 visits in the 2000-2009 years. Always stayed for 7-14 days each visit. Got married on cliffs.
Since Negril, I have been to other "hot" destinations (Curacao, Cozumel, Kapaa/Hawaii). Prior to Negril we traveled all over Mexico, Ocho Rios, Roatan in Honduras, St. Martin and Aruba.
Best vacation spot BY FAR that we have been to is NEGRIL. Friendly people, reasonable price, and the food is AMAZING in comparison.

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
I too am starting to reconsider my upcoming trip to Negril.
- What if I get sand in my shorts and don't get it out before I get home?
- What if I get sunburned?
- What if I get water up my nose while swimming in the ocean or get saltwater in my eyes? :o
- What if I stub my toe on a rock at the cliffs?
That's it, I'm canceling. I don't think I can handle it!

Don't forget sand fleas, mosquitoes, higglers, & all those other tourists you might find offensive in some way. Really? Someone needs to stay home, lock the doors, & look for where they lost a non-judgemental atitude... if they ever had one in the first place. Don't take a cruise, don't go to a major city, stay out of Florida (or FloriDUH as we call it here), avoid any island where someone was ever killed. I guess you're back to staying at home.

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
You don't think there will be any townies around the beach do you? That could really ruin a trip.

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
Wrong! I'm not hiding. Wow, Respect Mon. I appreciate the comments and not the insults. I thought there were rules on this forum. So I don't think the food is to die for not a reason to attack me. It never stopped me in the past from coming to Negril or anywhere else for that matter. I don't live to eat I eat to live. I wouldn't have booked a 2 week vacation there in the first place if I thought is sucked. I LOVE NEGRIL. The thing that prompted this post, maybe a knee jerk reaction, were the posts I read here on this forum. I didn't invent that stuff I SAW IT HERE. I've only been a member a few days. I came across this forum psyched for my trip to Jamaica and all I read about was negativity. Not the ire feeling I thought I would find. So excuse me if this was taken the wrong way. ONE LOVE

Re: Second thoughts about booking negril
It's kinda like making fun of someone's mother.
