I do! I will probably start next month and go at least once a week, twice if I can fit it in until our trip in April.
After living in the frozen tundra of MN I feel like I need to get a little base on my pasty white legs before exposing them to the Jamaica sun!
Yes, I have to. I know it's not good for you, but neither is getting sunburned.
Not to sound blasphemous but after 40 years at sea I try to stay out of the sun in Jamaica. Watch the Jamaicans stand in the shade whenever possible.
"Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the noon day sun"
Despite plenty of contrary advice, proper sunbeds are not only safe but creates vitamin D for your body which is very good for you. We always get a head start. Google it. It won't take long to find the truth about "PROPER" sunbeds.
Of course sun burning should be avoided like the plague.

Perhaps he's a quack. Perhaps he's really on to something. :)
Yep, go a couple times before vacation ~~ get a little day-dreaming in, in those 15 minutes :o
I do, Im from NJ, its the law here.
We start about a week before we leave and go 3 or 4 times. I think of it as the beginning of the trip. They have XM radio and I always find the reggae or Buffet music to really get me in the mood during those 15 minute stints. Very relaxing!!!
My wife and I always do. Just started yesterday as matter of fact. Nice to have a tan when you step off the plane, less risk of sunburn from the tropic sun. Besides, it will feel great Monday when it's -4 degrees for the high temp.
We do....Usually go about 8 or 10 sessions increasing as we go to get a good base before our trip...Then we can enjoy our trip without getting fried...Pasty white New England winter skin does not mix well with the Jamaican sun
I always start a month before my reach
I usually do, but didn't before our December trip. We spent a lot of time in the shade, I still got a nice tan with no burn. I'm planning on starting soon so I don't lose my tan before our next reach...
We HAVE to, Negril is the only sun we see in 52 weeks.
I do, I do! Just me, not the man. 30 day treatment. Love that 10 min of warmth that we need this time of year. BUT, last year i had a scare and had to have a body scan....so i am cautious. See you T&A, Craig 123 on the bus crawl. Counting down the daze.....
9 reaches no tanning beds
If we are staying at Hedo we pre-tan just to even out the bodies color changes, otherwise we don't as we still have some tan left from the nice summers in NC.
Yep, just left the tanning bed a few minutes ago. I always go a few times before my vacation. I like to get the *all over* tan, just in case I might want to stroll over to Hedo...
I do, about once every 1-2 weeks beginning in Nov when days get shorter/colder. I helps with preventing SADD. I then go once a week before I leave, making sure I hit the bed the day before flying.
I don't! Used to tan before a trip to a sunny location but not anymore. I've seen too many of my golfing buddies with large scars from melanoma surgery. I use spf100, snorkel with a tee shirt on, wear a hat and stay out of the midday sun.
Jaherring even tho you are a die hard Bama fan, you crack me up man with your sense of humor and comments.
Be careful during your tanning sessions. Could be painful.

Nope, I had stage II melanoma from tanning beds. It gives you sun spots, too! It's bad enough I'm out in the sun at all, and I don't have a light complexion either.
I don't ;)
I usually try to do a month before we go.
We also start tanning a moth before we go.
I always do it to get a good base and it also serves a purpose....The hagglers on the beach will press you more because they see how white your skin is so they know you are New....A guy once approached us and said "you just got here" we said "how did you know" he said it was the really white skin...
It's true..Nothing racist about it?
I always do, from 150 to 200 minutes worth. This way you don't have to worry about accidentally catching too much sun the first few days, which is very easy to do when you stand in the sea with drink in hand watching the action on the beach!
Yes twice a week 10 min for a month before we go. If we want to take a boat trip or do something in the afternoon sun I don't want to worry about burning. Husband is a landscaper so he still has a bit of a tan left when we go.
I stay clear away from sunbeds. If you must use one please use stand up versus lay down. I saw MANY clients ( I am aesthetician) with fungus on the back of their thighs caused from a reaction to the cleaning chemical and the heat of the bed.
I use self tanner. If applied well, it gives the look of having a tan without the damage of UVAandB rays.
i am fair skinned and sit in the shade the whole time we are there with the exception of early morning beach walks before the sun rises over the trees.
We use Ombrelle 45. I come home with a typical tan, my husband who is olive skinned and sits in the shade with me comes home very tanned.
for those looking for a "base"..:)
I goggled and got a Mayo Clinic Health Page.........having a "lamp" tan gives your skin the "sun protection" (base) is about
sp4....so pre-tanning gives you a very small advantage in compared to those that dont "pre-tan"...it only takes a day or two to darken up from lilly white..........so why expose yourself to them?
your a tourist....locals are expert at pickin 'em out....lolAttachment 22098
The Lord gave you ONLY ONE set of skin, keep it pretty...save your health
You are absolutely correct Rambo. Very little protection is offered with a "base" tan and that sometimes gets people in trouble.
We all burn technically, even dark skin burns. Technically we are getting radiation when we expose ourselves to UVA and UVB rays, thats why I reference the word "burn" in both fair and dark skin. Then the blood comes rushing to the cells, in our skin to calm and cool them from the radiation. Some people turn redder than others but we all get technically burned. The UV rays activate the melanin that we have in every cell of our body, unless you are Albino, in which case you have very little to no melanin in your cells. Those with higher amounts of melanin turn darker than those of us with less amount of melanin. Melannin is the bodies natural protection from UV rays and is what determines the colour of our hair, skin and eyes.
UVA rays can penetrate the skin into the subcutaneous tissue which results in what you see above in the picture of the very tanned woman. UVA rays break down the connective tissue causing advanced wrinkles and loss of tone to the skin.
When I return home from Negril, I use a "good quality" self tanner to enhance the tan I have and to make it last a little longer. One of the best I have used and sold is in the Clarins line up of body care. Using a gel based formula works really well in the application and penetration.
:cool:I do one month before the trip, protect my face tho. For some reason if I bake my face (suntan bed or the real thing) it swells and I look something like Frankinstein! Happened the first time I went to Ja. Woke up the second morning and there it was! I made up my mind I would not let it ruin the vacation. Wore my sunglasses most of the time, and use an umbrella when on the beach now!
