Camera help-What do you use to take your Negril pics?

Hey Boardies,

One of the reasons I love this board is because all of the wonderful pictures,(special thanks to Clarity for her wonderful A to Z thread, and all the fab trip reports from fellow boardies) and since I'm leaving in a couple of weeks, I need to shop for a new camera. I currently have the Canon A560 7.1 MP,( yep, its time for a new one lol)..Just need a compact Point and Shoot camera. I eventually want to get a DSLR but my wallet say's not now:rolleyes:

I have it narrowed down to 3 choices and I'm hoping I can get some input on which one to choose.. Please help me out.:).

All under $200 (my budget)- Any Pro's/Cons

Canon Powershot ELPH 100 HS - 12.1 MP- 4X optical zoom

Panasonic DMC FH25S- 16.1MP- 8x optical zoom

Sony Cybershot W570 16.2MP-5x optical zoom

What's your experience with any of these brands?

Of the listings..... Canon is my pick......Powershot is a good model.....Canon Glass (lens) is one of the best right with Nikon.......

Sony Cybershots are the best! We used that for our pictures to Negril. we have two Sony's. - the Sony A33 (which is amazing!) But most of our shots were taken with our other camera.

It's an older model but now You can get it new for $150. It has a movie feature and a great zoom, + steady shot features. It's also affordable enough that you don't have to worry carrying it around everywhere. Every shot we took was clear. It's just a great camera. I highly recommend any SONY.

The Sony W570 gets excellent reviews.

theres 3 more for canon - Canon powershots are excellent - never held a sony i would compare..

if your budget were a bit higher - i would recommend a canon s95 - or a panasonic lx-5 - but atyour price point your choices are ok... i would pick the canon..

i think that is 5 to 3 now.. lol

Nikon is the brand we choose for pro work...but for the point and shoot we chose the Panasonic Lumix and are loving it so far.

which one would be best for starting photographers? I am going to be investing in a good camera, and if I can afford it, want a waterproof one to take snorkeling pics.

If it were me......I would look to Goggle also, just type in what you want it to do, and check the reviews....remember there are good cameras, and dont forget, save some money and buy a nicer camera, then get a underwater housings, they have come way down in cost........many choices

My Panasonic takes underwater pix. I think its a good starter camera...

thanks..is there a particular make or model of panasonic I need to check out? How much do they run..I'm looking at hopefully around $200 for the camera. I finally decided to stop just buying throwaways, and am really looking forward to playing with it and getting familiar with it before I take it on my trip. :)

That is one of the most intelligence statements ......I've heard in a long time..........Read the Manual and shoot before you go........if its gonna have any problems that is when they are more likely to happen...........

I have the Panasonic Lumix - I don't think it cost more than $200 - got it at Costco...

I second the Panasonic Lumix. I have had 2 Canon's, and while they weren't bad I didn't get the best shots from them either. I got the Lumix for the extended zoom to catch the Sunsets better but it has been an overall good camera and takes great pictures.

When I wanted similar, I found the underwater digital cams to be much more expensive. And I started thinking about the low percentage of time I would actually use it underwater compared to normal use.
I found a compromise by buying an underwater camera case, to use with the Canon Powershot I ended up buying, for snorkeling and places like YS Falls.
Not the underwater case sold by Canon - again very expensive - but one from a third party. They make them for all brands of cameras, not just Canon.

wow...still confused on which one I will choose, but thanks to everyone who chimed in... I think its gonna be Canon VS Panasonic.. I really like the optical zoom that Panasonic has, but being a previous Canon owner, it's kinda hard to switch brands. Not sure how the 2 compare in terms of low light shooting, battery life, and image stabilization.. Anyone?

Canon has done right by me..

reviews are about even,,,Canon seems to lead with good batt life,but Pana seems to take the photo quicker, with little "shutter lag".........Image Stab about the same, Canon lower in Op Zoom, (by a lot).................??? might have to chose because of color....lol
or "gut feeling"...lol

Oh gosh Rambo... Is this what it has boiled down to? Color? .... LOL... That still doesn't help because they both come in silver/gray.. LOL uuhh Boy.. :) :)

Thanks for all the good info/advice, ya'll. I favorited that link to the camera and am thinking about the camera bag too..not sure yet which route I will go now, as I prolly would save money just getting a waterproof case, but at the same time, I spend a lot of time in the wata, period, not just snorkeling and would be taking a lot of 'wet pics'. Either way, it's in my budget to get a digital camera by August. :)

Canon & Panasonic are both good brands. My Panasonic is 2 yrs old now, and is still as much camera as I need. 10MP -18X

I know its not one of the three cameras you mentioned but we have the older version of this camera and love it.

The zoom is not that great but it takes great pictures, its waterproof to 10', and its really tough so you can just throw it in a backpack or a beach bag and not worry about it.
We have had ours for two years and had no problems at all.

I'm liking my new Cannon Cyber-shot with 10x zoom and a panorama feature.

The Canon is cool but not great when it starts to get dark. We have one and I love it for daytime shots but right after sunset..not so hot.

Nikon for a good DSLR

Panasonic Lumix for a good point and shoot.

I have all 3.

Waterproof - Olympus! (great during the day and in full sun, but not so hot in low light, but fun to walk the beach and not care if it gets wet when you take a dip and fun taking it snorkeling) This is my day camera.

Nikon for a good DSLR - this is my expensive one that I dont take on day drinking bar hopping down the beach.

Panasonic Lumix for a good point and shoot. (great in low light) This one works great at night in low light when I dont want to bring my big expensive camera.
