Don't have much to add but this visit use Lime (granted, it was a loaner phone from our driver...so they are many variables). Had some minor problems but overall, not bad. However, the locals that helped me with the phone at the resort told me that they all liked their digicel better. So, not much help but maybe a little. There are so many folks on here that are truly experts....sadly, I am not one of them. Good luck and let us know how it turns out.
Thanks Yetta
Takinit, I recommend Digicel. I have had no problems with them anywhere on the island. The girls at the Digicel store next to Burger King are great. Fast in and out. Bought a cheap flip phone several years ago and when needed, stop in for a new simm card. Lots of long distance time to the States for about $12.00. Lots cheaper than adding international to my Verizon plan. Peace.
My phone is unlocked so I am hoping I can just buy a sim card and put it in my phone and have it working while I am in Jamaica. Once we leave I just have to put my Canadian sim card in and I'm back in business.
Thanks Phil & Cindy just looking for the most inexpensive reliable option. Lime is cheaper but why doesn't any one seem to use it?
I used Lime in November. Got a deal on the phone, $999j including SIM and $100j in minutes. VERY cheap. I didn't have any problems at all calling home or locally and texting.
I know Marko has used Lime as well and didn't report any problems. I think Lime is cheaper because it's working to overcome Digicel's majority of the market. Locals and tourists have been using Digicel for awhile, thus, it is favoured, but I really didn't find anything wrong with Lime and for my purposes, why not go with something that is a quarter (in my case) or half the cost?
Thanks Melody I think I am going to go with whatever is cheaper only going to get used a couple times a year.
overall digicel is more reliable but for a vacation and not long term i would just go with whichever is cheapest
We bought a Lime in December and had no reception problems in Negril or Treasure Beach. We were just looking for the cheapest phone available.
Regards,
Bob
Lime too! Bought a phone for about $15 I was good to go for the time i was there. Great reception!
I'm going to go with LIME as well when I get there. I've had Digicel but LIME is cheaper to call International and Lime to Lime. From what I've heard, the reason no one wants to get Lime there is that if you have a Lime phone and someone else has Digicel, it costs them more to call you and vice versa. Makes sense for the locals.
Where is the LIME store in Negril?
What would be quicker....get the driver to stop in MoBay (assuming there's a LIME store there too) and grab one there, or wait until I'm in Negril?
There is a LIME counter in Mega Mart in Montego Bay. I know there is another one that I was going to have our driver stop at but we stopped at Mega Mart first and our driver found the LIME counter there. It's just a small counter and we had to get someone to come over and serve us, but all went well. When you come in the store, turn right immediately and head past the Scotia ATM and the counter is straight ahead towards the back wall. The LIME store in Negril is above the Value Master grocery store.
Just got back. Had my driver call a Lime store on the way to Negril. I think it was in Lucea. When we passed through there was someone on the street in front of the Lime store with a Lime bag...phone in it's box with a charger and minutes on it, charged and ready to use. All for $20us
We used a Lime in August and didn't update minutes. Went to buy a SIM card in January but they just reactivated the phone and they charged us a total of 300J for 90 intl minute. Love Lime.
rastagal...it was great! I had a buddy with me, first trip to Jamaica, and he couldn't believe it. I told him things like that tend to happen all the time in Jamaica...just ask for something and it usually ends up happening :-) I think he will be back for a second trip!
Thanks for the info :) I might try popping into Mega Mart....and I hear they have the best prices for rum there!
