Avocados?

Just wondering. Are avocados for sale in Ja? They used to be grown there but I've never seen reference to them. If not, i wonder why not?

They are called pears in Jamaica. I think they have a season but I'm not sure when that is.

We had some when we were there around Christmas/New Years. They look like the crappy, big green Florida avocados we avoid around here, but look like Haas ones inside. Not sure if we got them in MB at MegaMart or in Negril

Any meal is improved with a nice piece of pear!

Sometimes Jem and the other fruit venders have them.
I know that if you ask for one they will have it for you the next day !

There season may be short. I'll be picking up food for lunches as we have a kitchen at Westender and Ras is right...a good avocado is a lovely thing...I'll check out mega mart when we arrive. First time there - any hints about store? Do they have beer and wine? It's a big store so I imagine I can get most stuff I'm used to except different brands. Yogurt, cheese, pasta, etc. there are four of us so we are doing a big shop before heading to Negril.

Mega Mart does have beer, not sure about wine, but there's a big liquor store in the same building. Make sure you weigh your veggies in the back, don't wait until you get to checkout.

I think pear season is july to december.

Pine tree John I think you are right. We love avocados,and always have our fruit lady Vern start looking for them as soon as we arrive! Sometimes there aren't any to be had in April when we go.

Just got 2 great ones from the fruit lady at Wild Parrot. Ummm!

Check with Verne at Donaldson's Inn (Miss Lena's) a little north of Treehouse. She has a fruit stand in front of Miss Lena's Inn Ting. If she doesn't have them today, she will get them for you tomorrow.........or the next day. We have gotten them from her before.

We're in Negril mid-May to mid-June each year and the fruit ladies on the beach always have avocados. Michael with the jerk barrel directly across the street from Kuyaba...his wife sells fruit at his stand and she also has avacados that time of the year. Not sure if there is an avacado season in JA but I've always been able to get them in May/June.

alibop, perhaps you can ask the fruit lady what the season is since you got them in february :)
