Is anyone able to comment on the current exchange rate offered for USD at either/both of these locations?
The best cambio exchange when I was there a couple weeks back was at the new cambio at the Boardwalk Village.
Thanks PGW. Please tell me where the boardwalk village is.
All the cambios will have approximately the same rate give or take. The difference will work out to a few pennies one way or the other so I would recommend whichever one is most convenient.
like Ras says they are usually pretty close........
but the one at FX trader by HiLo is probably your best bet for best rate.......
the one by Bourbon Beach kinda gives the worst rate......
but it really does come down to which is more convenient......
taking a taxi to HiLo from say the beach kinda defeats the purpose for getting the best rate if you figure in the cost of a taxi.....
Cool Runnings, Marko
Boardwalk Village is up the beach by Seashore Bay and the Kool Runnings waterpark.
Hey poolguy you will be able to help me on this one. Do you or can you exchange canadian money ?
Pick a currency and they will change it for you - Canadian & US are the most popular as we are the two biggest groups on the Rock !
Thanks, what i really want to ask is it any better to exchange can. down in negril or switch canadian to US up here? Then exchange the US down in Negril.
You may want to exchange a small amount of Canadian to US for when you first get down here as some of the smaller vendors don't always know what the Canadian exchange rate is...but they almost always know the US rate.
Otherwise don't bother changing your Canadian to US as the cambios exchange many curriences with no problem & it's not beneficial to exchange from Canadian to US to Jamaican.
Thank you
I used to use the Cambio by bourbon beach on the road. This year it was different...It did not look official. I did not have to produce any ID and my rate was a full 5% less than at the Hi Lo....I got 94 at the HiLo and got 90 on beach road...
BR Mon,
That's why I have always used the FX Trader by the HiLo. Published rates, established company owned by Grace Kennedy foods, consistent rates and service island wide.
If you're a Canadian and have Scotiabank. Your best bet might be using the ATM? sometimes they are out of money though. I use the ATM at HiLo as well.
For US$, the cambio by Roundabout was giving 95.8 today - the cambio near HiLo was giving 95.6..... unless you are buying a car - I wouldnt worry about it.... (grin)
My last few trips I've noticed the cambio by the roundabout had the slightly higher exchange. Good for me since that's closer. I pretty much have given up at the one near Bourbon Beach... often w/out J$.
BTW... the reason you don't have to use ID is if you're in the computer system &/or they recognize you as a familiar face, not necessary. There have been times I started to present an ID & was told they didn't need to see it.
I have been using the FX Trader for over a decade. I'm in their computers and they know me by name. I still present ID for every transaction, just like at my bank here in the states. Doesn't bother me in the least. Secure and professional service.
Just be careful and count your money at the window. In February, at the HiLo Cambio, the woman behind the window tried to short me by 2000J. I was changing $500US at the very beginning of the trip. Not a fun throught to start the Vacation especially after a couple of stripes along the way from MBJ.
By "the cambio at the roundabout" I assume this means the RBC ATM in the parking lot across from Burger King. I always check the rates and I find the RBC cambio has just slightly better rates. Sometimes it's a bit of a pain to walk to the RBC ATM with all the locals that want to "change money" in the parking lot. FX Trader is conveneante because you can do some souvenir shopping at the Sunshine Plaza or get some groceries at the Hi-Lo.
Russ, I'd like to think that it was an honest counting error. As I said I have used that cambio for over a decade and never had an issue. But that being said it is good advice. I always count my money before leaving the window again whether here in the states or in Jamaica.
Ditto what Ras W wrote. 500 US is a lot of bills in JMD, I would probably have to count 3 times to verify my own counting!
I have to pop in on this one, too. This cambio has been reliable for years. I'd probably guess it was just a fluke if money was off. I like that they know me, remember me from trip to trip. It's good to visit a place w/ employee stability (applies also at ValueMaster, Sunnyside, Fattie's, & various vendors/shops along the Norman Manley Blvd.) Still, I count my $$$ before I leave the counter at any cambio even if someone else has to wait a few seconds. I'm not moving on unless I know all is OK w/ the transaction. That's what it is, a business transaction.
Negril has changed a lot through the years & we all have our opinions on that. Whatever, however we know Negril, there will always be things to love & appreciate about this comfortable, beautiful, enchanting place.
