What is your top "day trip" or experience?
If you had to pick one day trip or experience while in Negril, what would it be?
Is your answer different for a newbie?
We already have the One Love Bus booked, and we're planning a trip to the Appleton Estates factory for the tour. But with so many amazing things to see, we're having trouble deciding what else we want to really pursue while we're there. We'll be there for 8 nights and we plan on "not planning" at least half our time... but I really want to make sure we see the things that have made so many people fall in love with this place.
So tell me your favorite place to go or thing to do/experience!

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
For your first trip, I would plan to see one of the falls - either Mayfield or YS. Pelican Bar is also a popular excursion. Some people combine YS Falls and Pelican Bar into a one day excursion, but either one can easily take-up most of the day if you're taking it slow and make stops along the way for lunch, etc..

The Blue Hole near Brighton is a great excursion. We spent a few hours there and could have easily stayed longer. They are said to have a great kitchen....we didn't eat, though. Wish we would have.

I would say YS Falls (it's beautiful and fun) combined with a trip to the Pelican Bar (it's one of a kind). It's a long day, but a good one :)

You could also take a boat trip along the beach or go parasailing, it's a great way to see the coastline.

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
You could also add YS Falls to your Appleton trip. We did and it made for a great day.
Another awesome albeit ambitious day trip is Nine Mile in St. Ann's, the birth and resting place of Bob Marley. It's a lot of driving but through some of the most beautiful scenery you will ever find. Leave early and on the way go to the Rocklands Bird Sanctuary outside of Montego Bay. On the way back stop at Luminous Lagoon/Glistening Waters in Falmouth for an amazing and magical experience. It must be seen after dark so have a leisurely dinner before you take the boat ride. This is as I said ambitious and will get you back to Negril fairly late but it is a day you will never forget, trust me.
Bless...

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
YS Falls and Pelican Bar are definitely worth the trip!
But if you don't feel like actually leaving Negril, I would call up Famous Vincent and have him take you on a tour of the cliffs coast line and then out to the reef for snorkelling. He is an amazing guide and actually goes snorkelling with you.
Pack up a cooler full of cold ones and enjoy!

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
November 2007 - Road Trip to Luminous Lagoon/ Glistening Waters in Falmouth with Rob, Lisa and Kenny (the crocodile hunter) as the driver. Left around lunch time, several stops off the "OLD" road to Negril, late lunch in Mo Bay, then onto the NEW Highway to Ocho Rios. Several stops later we are at Glistening Waters. Chill with Kingston Pilsners until night fall. Awesome night for the Luminous Lagoon. Moon rise was late and the water was still. Dark night and lots of GLOW! Then the big controversy!! I swear on a stack of bibles that it was a luminous Crocodile, Rob says it was a bamboo log. Since when does bamboo have four legs and a tail!!! Got back after midnight after a stop at Jerky's in Mo Bay and a nice little bar in Lucea. Kenny did an awesome job driving!

Mayfield Falls has always been my favourite for the overall experience. Walking the falls, swimming and jumping in deeper pools of water, guides explaining plants and telling stories, a really cool place!

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
Ha. Someone say tea and cake?
But seriously, YS Falls combined with a trip to the Pelican Bar seems doable. Google maps says its 2 hrs from Pelican Bar back to Negril. 1.5ish from Negril to YS falls and 40mins from the falls to the bar. I think that's optomistic and not accounting for island time. Thoughts?
Would one be better than the other to visit first? I'm guessing the falls first.
Does leaving Negril at 9 sound logical?
Whats the best way? Booking a private driver/tour like talk of the town or one of the guides mentioned on this board?
Sorry for all the questions. Just really excited.
I think I could skip the falls and just spend the day at Floyds.

We're thinking kind of similarly. I'm considering tacking on the Pelican Bar to our trip to Appleton, but not sure if it would pair better with YS Falls, instead. I don't want to go more than two places on one day because I'd hate to feel rushed, but I'm pretty keen on all three of those.
I've looked at a few of the private driver/tour groups and many of them do say they pair Pelican Bar with both Appleton & YS, so it's certainly a reasonable prospect. One I looked at said they leave at 8:00am, so close to what you were thinking.
All of this stuff seems awesome. I want to be careful not to plan to do too much, though... need to leave time to just do whatever the day feels like. :)

I liked going to the Blue Hole. It would make a nice day trip. Its not too far from Negril either. They have a bar and are building rooms.

YS falls would be my choice

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
We enjoyed our trip to the Blue Hole, as well. You can pair it up with a trip to nearby Little Bay. LB is a quiet change of pace from Seven Mile Beach, where you'll find mostly fishermen. There is not much there in the way of diversions, except for a small stand selling drinks.

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
We did YS and Pelican together and had plenty of time if we didnt get a flat on the way back. Be sure to take a pit stop in Belmont for the Peter Tosh masoleum also. We also did the Black River and the blue hole and cave in Roaring River on a different trip. Wouldn't reccomend Black River though.

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
We did YS & the Pelican Bar in one day. We left 8:30ish and went to YS first (with a stop for peanut porridge along the way), faced my fears and did the zipline, climbed the falls and posed for some pictures, then hit the Pelican Bar for a late lunch. Made it back to Negril around 6:30 or so?? It was a long day, but a good one. We went with Gregg from Reggae Tours.

My favourite day trip was going out to Nine Mile to see Bob Marley's mausoleum. The drive through the mountains was amazing. Gorgeous view.

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
.....a few years back, there was a "Booze Cruise Train" that would leave Montego Bay early in the mornin and head up to the Appleton Distillery using a "old" GE Diesel Engine, with a stop in Catadupa (small town) for some hand made clothing, I was able to slip a few bucks to the driver and my wife and I sat up front, and I was able to drive with the "mon" snoozing...lol. After lunch and a drinking tour of the stills..... we would head back, now sitting in the back and the people wondering where we got on..lol.... stopping again in Catadupa, and during ALL the way down........on this narrow guage railway!, rockin and rollin going down, sailing really!.......the young man serving rum punchs never spilled a drop....we stopped on "Ganja Mt. and also a tour of some very large caves......(sadly due to dis-repair and funding it is no longer done).....but we had the most beautiful Kodak moments looking down into the small huts and villages from the train, we had two cars...the rest acted as a "Bus" for the locals......
One of my wishes is to have that back for more to enjoy, many such places are like that for us
Happy Easter

Re: What is your top "day trip" or experience?
A couple of years ago we went down to Little Bay and went swimming in Bob Marleys cave. It was so out of character for me to jump into a hole in the ground and swim in a cave but it was great. The water was bubbly like mineral water. Just beautiful. I was a little worried about getting myself back up the rope to get out but I made it. It was right by an old cabin which has since blown down. It was supposed to be Bob Marley's get away, right on the ocean. You can almost hear him sitting by the sea singing. Look for Booth, he will take you around and end up at his aunts bar. There are excellent restaurants in Little Bay and if you are adventurous you can get there by scooter, up through Orange Hill and keep going.Attachment 25379Attachment 25380Attachment 25381
