Cigarette butts in the sand
One of my personal pet peeves in Negril is watching tourists sit on the beach smoking all day, poking their cigarette butts into the sand as if that made them magically disappear. There is a campaign going on to raise awareness that cigarette butts are not biodegradable, they are at least mildy toxic, and that they should be disposed of properly.

Thomas E. Novotny, a professor of global health at San Diego State University, said that while no direct link had been demonstrated between littered cigarette butts and human health, the butts leach measurable amounts of cadmium, arsenic, lead and nicotine.
A single cigarette butt in a liter of water containing minnows is toxic enough to kill half of the fish within 96 hours, a standard toxicity test, according to an experiment featured in an article published in the journal Tobacco Control that Professor Novotny helped write.
“We can’t show that there’s actually human harm but we should look at it as a potential harm and prevent it from contaminating the environment,” said Professor Novotny.

People use ashtrays at Nirvana

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
This is a pet peeve of mine as well ..... and I am a smoker.
I always make sure that I have something to dispose of the butts in with me when I am at the beach. Quite easy to do, as I'm not normally at the beach without a quickly emptying Red Stripe in my hand :)

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Always wondered why smokers thought it was okay to flick butts wherever they pleased. It's as if the whole world is their ash tray.
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
littering and killing themselves....sad
and my wife stepped on a "hot" one on the beach, barefoot

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Butts in the sand is one of my peeves too.
I watch smokers dispose of their butts in the sand and cover them up - just like a dog covers his turds.
At white Sands - where I stay, I see Leedon, the security guard, walking around picking up butts that smokers have tossed and it really pee-es me off. Leedon works hard enough without having to pick up after smokers.
But (no pun intended) I don't see this problem going away, most smokers do feel that the world is their ashtray.

Sign me up pisses me off as well,it's awesome when you pull up to a stop light and someone has emptied their ash tray right there !WTFO?

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
It happens all the time on the roads around here too, where do they think those butts they flick out their window end up?

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Yes, they can bring up to a carton each I believe.
I agree the butts in the sand are gross... Almost as gross as sitting on my patio enjoying the morning when someone next door decides to "wake and bake"..
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
According to this article, 2 cartons are permitted into Jamaica which is the same coming into the states.

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Mi Lady uses an empty Red Stripe bottle for an ashtray, sometime Red Stripe Light, occasionally a Dragon Stout. For some reason we always seem to have a good quantity of those around.

Smokers care less about the effects of second hand smoke than they do littering.

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
I am a smoker...I take a water bottle on the beach to use for butts, and I do spend time picking up nasty butts of other smokers...then I bury my bottle in the sand. KIDDING!! I toss the bottle...lol

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
I walked by a neighborhood church yesterday. The lawn of the church was heavily covered in butts. (The snow has finally melted away). There are some VERY inconsiderate smokers, and there are some VERY inconsiderate non-smokers. Along the same line as butts in the sand, I hate to see people put butts in the beer bottles. (Red Stripe or otherwise). Negril and Jamaica can raise a person's consciousness, hopefully a few smokers (the inconsiderate variety) catch on.

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Yeah that's messed up...sunray what's wrong with butts in bottles??
anyways...i really just wanted to say this:
I QUIT SMOKING!! 25 days Cig free!!!
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
I was really shocked by the number of times I saw Jamaicans litter on the beach. Wrappers, bottles, cigarette butts, you name it.
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Nice. 25 days is really good. The forst 2 weeks are the hardest. Now it will get easier. My only advise Tizzy,is to now Stop countin the day and talking about it.Try to just act like you just don't smoke anymore. I never understood why those who Kick a habit,drugs,coke....
THEN become counselers and all they do is talk about kicking the habit? I quit smoking one night after coughing ALL night and that was that?(except the vegetables products they grow in Ja?)

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
That is awesome tizzy, stay with it you will DEFINATELY be glad you did,so will thing 1 and 2!
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Maybe the only thing worse than a butt in the sand is one in the spit of an almost empty beer bottle!
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Hey y'all smoke em up!!! It's job security for this Respiratory Therapist!!!
Totally kidding ... no screw you posts please! I wish everyone who smokes could see things the way I have to every time I work! It's a slow horrible death when that emphysema hits you full speed. Just pray your MD is nice enough to knock you out with some good stuff :)
Tizzy ... I am very happy for you. Please keep it up!
So, in conclusion, butts on the beach bothers me as well!!!!

Vince tell your friends to buy at the duty free in the US as the cigs you get in Jamaica are not the same. Its also cheaper if they buy duty free. I think the customs form read you can bring 100 cigs (1 carton) for 1 week stay. I smoke Newport when I bought them leaving Ja for cheap they where not the same. look the same but made in the Phillipines.

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
To keep from getting many on the board mad at me, I will refrain from telling my thoughts about smokers. :D
(BTW.....the wife and I are both former smokers.)
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Thanks yall, I appreciate the encouragement. Fred I'm gonna take that advise....funny thing though...i found the first week to be easier than the next two but as of yesterday it seems to be much better. I'm kinda cheating and using an ecig some of the time but hey smoke free works for me.
Striper Thing 1&2 are stoked! :) and I SMELL SO GOOD hahaha
I dont really care what other people do for the most part but littering butts is a no no...not cool
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Is it litter if you don't watch it fall? Seems to be the prevalent thought. Seriously, I think that the sand fleas get lots of sustenance from the saliva on cigarette butts.
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Bottle caps in the sand are tied with cig butts, imo. I always stop & pick them up because it could be my feet I'm saving! Nothing like stepping on a rusty bottle cap & cutting your foot to ruin a good time!
-
Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
Talking about bottle caps. I took a catamaran cruise to ricks cafe back in march of 2000. While we were parked waiting to jump off and swim to ricks I was watching the guide pop a top off a red stripe bottle for me and as the cap started flying overboard I reached out and grabbed it. The guide said No Worries Mon, we just let the caps go into the water. I just shook my head and wondered how that damages the sea and could injure people also. That cant be good can it??

Re: Cigarette butts in the sand
I myself Like butts in the sand but just not the cigarette type.
