Should I bring an umbrella in April?
So I was reading a thread about rain this morning on TA. We're typically there in Nov/Dec when there isn't much rain; last trip it only rained at night. Since we're going late April :) should we bother packing an umbrella or do they have them in the rooms at Coco? Is there somewhere (covered) that you can sit out there when it's raining? We're in a Jr Suite, so I don't think there's any roof or overhang over the deck??

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
There is no overhang on the outside deck of the Jr suites...the main bar, the beach bar are covered and part of the restaurant is covered...I think there is also a small gazebo now on the property...

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
We have spent many a late April in Negril and never needed an umbrella. The rains are not that frequent and are warm and pleasant. Even if you do get a little wet, you dry off quickly. I have always found the afternoon shower the perfect excuse for a "nap" with my Empress. Love the sound of rain on the roof.

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
Oh geeze, I hadn't even thought about an umbrella. I'm already taking too much stuff... I'm just gonna risk it.
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
There's no better feeling than sitting or dancing in the rain in Negril. Makes me smile just thinking about it.

Since you had our room, we decided to extend our stay at Coco and cancel Catcha :) Seriously though, we decided we'd rather just hang on the beach and the rates at Coco are so good this time of year...

LOL - sounds like a plan! I do love the rain, especially in Jamaica - the sound, the smell...

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I have to laugh when you see people rushing out of the ocean when it starts to rain ........... are you afraid of getting MORE wet?? :p
There are plenty of covered bars around to hide out in if it does rain, or like the other ladies said ........... dance, dance, dance!

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
When it rains, I usually run into the water.
We have brought umbrellas; brought them back home unused.
We have been to Negril every March/April from 2008 on. Like anywhere else on earth, the weather varies. It has been hot (I mean Jamaican complaining hot). It has been ideal! It has been cool (for Jamaica). The weather has never been overly rainy. The usual afternoon shower before the sun sets is about it.
Rainy season is later when the tropics heat up.

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
Maybe bring one little tiny umbrella to dress up a blended cocktail.... I like Spottycatz reply "There's no better feeling than sitting or dancing in the rain in Negril. Makes me smile just thinking about it."
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I always have a compact umbrella packed in my suitcase but I'm in Negril during rainy season. Usually I only carry it when I walk to town & it looks like it might rain. I joke that doing that guarantees that it WON'T rain & that is normally the way it goes. If I use it when walking to town & back, it's usually as a "sun"brella... to shade me from the sun.

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I usually pick up a travel size one at Dollar Tree to bring down, if I don't use/need it, I give it to my housekeeper :)
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
many times we wished we would have had one for rain and sun.....but after the first 20 or so visits we gave up on needing one.....lol

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
cab drivers do not like to pick up "wet people"

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
You might have a point Marko! Probably not much point in bringing one, knowing me it would NEVER be where I need it :)
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I have a small umbrella that stays in my suitcase (even once I get home). I have been here a week and, on the beach, we have had some heavy rain a couple of times. It was not the "dancing in the rain" kind - LOL I find it useful for not only days like that but really hot ones too when I am out walking.
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I always bring an umbrella and use it when walking the beach - it sure helps if you are out there in full sun.
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
My vote is no umbrella. If it ain't rainin', you gonna be in the sea or the pool anyway! You're already wet! Why bother? Liquid Sunshine, SweetPea! Liquid Sunshine! (worst it can do is muss up your make up ... but if it doesn't rain, the heat will do that anyway! Save the space! Leave the make up at home. Ain't worth it! Let the real you shine through!)

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I hope you need the mother of all umbrellas! Sorry to say that but we have a draught going! I haven't had a shower in over two months--and no, I don't stink because I have been taking a bucket bath every day. I even ran around in the rain the other day just to remember what a shower feels like. Just want you to know that if it rains please don't be upset with us--we really need it! Leave the umbrella at home, though! if you have a little extra room in that suitcase you might bring along some school supplies or children's clothing. We could use it at St. Anthony's Kitchen! --Fr. Jim

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
Father Jim! I had no idea that there was that serious a lack of water! My apologies! IF there is a rainstorm, shelter yourself at St Anthony's, and lend a helping hand!
Oh. Come on! We get so much joy out of Jamaica ... why not give back? It takes but a few hours/probably seconds!; or a few lbs. of stuff in your luggage - just do it!
1 copy book x 200 Boardies = Many Kids with supplies!
Got room for 10 pencils? Do It. It's easy to be a hero! They don't need mega-heros; just little heros!
Think what a differnce we Boardies could make with a pencil each! ....... what are we, Rob? 200? That's a lot of pencils!!!
Meet Miss Pearl! Your life will change! She is totally awesome!
One pad of stupid corporate publicity is a world of use in Jam!
Could you stop by St Anthony's and:
Help for the school breakfast programme? (Oh come on! Jamaica at 6 am is AWESOME - but not as awesome as those children who only get to school because of this programme!
Drop off ONE pair of shoes for a child who can go to school that day because YOU did that? Did you know that flip flops are not acceptable at Jam schools? ( buy TOMS and go to their website and DEMAND Shoes for Jamaica!
Oh. Come on guys! We get so much ... let's just brainstorm how we can give back! No water? Are you serious? OK. We can't fix that ..... but One Pencil at a Time .... really - we can make a difference!
Fr Jim ROCKS!

Somebody always says this. Sorry... not so much fun when you're walking back from town w/ a full backpack & some grocery bags in hand. On the beach when you're in a bathing suit, I'd agree to some degree that the rain feels wonderful. I've been caught in the rain many times on my beach walks. Mostly it does feel good. When it gets to the coming down in sheets almost horizontally & feels like cold nails pelting your skin... not so enjoyable. Usually it is though.
Also glad to see I'm not alone in using them for blocking the sun. Mine seems to be used for this more than for rain.

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
Well....I still like the rain....
-
Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I think we all like the rain to some extent...just when your heading out for a nice dinner and show, its hard to be comfortable dripping wet into your food......and as was mentioned, Taxi's dont care for picking up soaking wet fares, when they might have to pick up dry people in their good clothes..........
So Yes Bring the Umbrella..................or..................No Leave it at home...................
(talking like a elected official now :)

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?

Hey M&G....I don't think Rob saw your question.
I'm pretty sure I have this right...there's over 4300 registered members on the board & over 50,000 unique visitors just last month. We meet A LOT of lurkers and they're boardies just as well...;)...SO...there's definitely A LOT of help that can be offered from just the folks that visit here.
For those that don't want to fill their suitcases....you can easily purchase items in Jamaica specific to the needs of the children & help out the local economy while doing so...Father Jim also posts a great list of needed items should you want to bring them with you!

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
I take a few "Emergency Ponchos." They're cheap ($1-1.50) and easy to carry in a pocket or bag. I have made many a Jamaican happy with them over the years. One particularly wet January, I bought a large umbrella at L&M. Used it once!

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
If your name is Gene Kelly by all means bring an umbrella :)

Here is hoping you get some more Fr. Jim and everyone else in Jamaica since you need it much more than we tourist don't. It rained every day when we were there from March 28th to April 4th but just in the afternoons and would usually quit by dark.

Re: Should I bring an umbrella in April?
Been here since Tuesday, the 16th. It has rained every afternoon for at least a couple of hours, and lots of it. Starts around 2 or 3 and can go after dark. Today, I just wore my bathing suit walking down Norman Manley when I went to buy coffee. Embrace it and go wet friendly, bring an umbrella if you want to stay dry or find a place you want to be for possibly a few hours.
It's all irie! Have a good trip and see you soon!
