Thanks for the photos. I know that a lot of folks don't like the idea of a horse along the beach....but I find it beautiful! Part of the charm to me, but I am a country gal and adore horses. With that said, the excrement needs to be taken care of and not just left. Hopefully, this will not end up as one of those photos from the past that we all are praying we could see again. If it does, at least I can recall in my memory..of the beauty of nature trotting peacefully along the beach in Negril.

Horses should be banned from the beach too many tourists and kids, and some of these guys ride them reckless on the beach, accident waiting to happen, just my opinion.
Most of the horsemen on the beach are young fellows who eat at St. Anthony's Kitchen--the guy in the photo is not one. They have a rough time with the cops as they are not licensed. On the other hand, they are just trying to survive! Most are really nice young men who have dropped out of school. You can argue for them or against them, of course. They just want to eat! They all live in rather poor circumstances! --Fr. Jim

Last week when I was on the beach..one horse left its mark about 5 feet long..it was disgusting and nobody picked it up..hookworm waiting to happen..I can only imagine how many people stepped in it at night..
Horses are very dangerous I almost had a kid run over, thank goodness she was not harmed. I understand that an alternative spot will be used for those guys. I just don't think horses pooping on the beach mix with all of the barefoot guests or even when they poop in the water. Solution also would be to get these guys in school.
When we were on the beach in February, we were walking up to Sunnyside to meet some people for sunset. As we approached the bar we heard a noise approaching from behind and soon recognized the sound of a barking dog and galloping hoofs thudding into the sand. I looked behind us and was startled to see a horse in full gallop approaching us, with a small black dog chasing it down the beach and barking. We stopped and froze, the horse passed us, at a full gallop, no more that two feet to one side. We were both shaken by what we thought was a close call.
Yes, horses on the beach ridden by dangerous riders are an accident waiting to happen. Kids run up and down and across the beach all day long, not looking where they are going. All it will take is on of those idiot horse guys, thundering along . . .

We've worked at getting the kids into school. Easier said than done after years of neglect! It's not a solution because it won't happen. Jobs would work. Anybody want to fund my shoe factory?

I see the guys on the beach and thought it looked a little boring riding just on the beach... We met a guide named Shalom out in front of Kuyuba.. We went to a stable in the hills of Negril.. Just 2 of us and 2 guides and they took us to a big burned down house a couple hundred years old and the guide climbed mango and star apple trees for us.. We rode horse for about 2 hours and paid 80 US and that included a cab ride. I highly suggest you do this if you like have the physical ability...Attachment 25838Attachment 25839

I love horses as well, and have enjoyed many a ride on the beach in my hometown but always after hours (after 6 pm) or very early, before 8 am. I have seen them at a canter with too many people on the beach in Jamaica. Even at a standstill there is liability if a visitor runs up on a horse and startles it. Maybe designate a stretch of beach that is not so heavily in use? Do they give trail rides on the beach or are they soliciting for local riding stables? Or are they more like pony rides where they just lead an inexperienced rider around a little bit? Poop does need to be cleaned up!

I'm not against horses on the beach but I agree they shouldn't gallop during the day and they should only be allowed North of Cosmo's only....I almost got run over last trip by them galloping I didn't hear them coming in the sand. It's really dangerous on the busy parts of the beach.
