I always use travelers cheques. I exchange them at the cambios (best rate is in HiLo grocery store). I have never had any problems with them and would rather carry them than cash.
Sometimes I bring a few traveler's checks, just because they can be replaced fairly quickly if stolen, but most of the time I use an ATM card to get cash as needed. Traveler's checks are best cashed at a cambio or bank. A lot of the small local businesses deal in cash and will be unable to give change in a timely manner, if they will even take a traveller's check.
Please note, I am a traveller who spends exclusively in the locally owned lodging, restaurants and businesses, so I use only Jamaican currency, except for occasionally tipping in US dollars if I have no J. So I do what works for me.
Enjoy your time in Jamaica!
my bank charges too high in fees for me to use our ATM cards so we always take travellers checks and cash them at the place right in front of Bourbon Beach with no problems, the 1st time I cashed some at the counter inside Scotia Bank but felt uncomfortable having $50,000J handed to me in such a public place lol
Use them all the time... As said, they are easy to cash in and I use them as needed. I still keep some cash in hand, but mostly Travelers Checks.
enough said ! :)
been using them for over 20 yrs....
We always take traveler's checks. Since you are staying at CCLP, just ask them what is their rate of exchange at the desk/bar etc.. it may be as good as the Cambio, or not.
I misplaced (or something) $300 in t checks a few years ago. The bank refunded my money, no problem. Do keep all your papers
they give you when you get their checks.
Have fun,
Respect,
We always bring TC with us. I really like knowing that if they are lost or stolen then I haven't lost all my money.
We tried to get TC's for the last reach. None of our banks carry them anymore! One bank kind of laughed and asked "Don't you have an ATM card?" There are 6 different banks within 5 miles of my house and NONE of them carry TC's anymore!
YMMV
We use the Cambio in front of Bourbon Beach...based off the name in the picture its called TimeTrend Financial...
We use TC's all the time - no problem cashing them at the cambio in front of Times Square, at Hi-Lo or at other various cambios we've used. The biggest challenge is finding a local bank in the U.S. that still issues them!
Travelers checks are the only way to go in my opinion. I do bring cash in small bills for tips and taxis. My banks also no longer offer travelers checks but I am a member of AAA and they offer them at no charge.
Ras Walleye, when was the last time you got them from AAA?
We went to our local AAA last year and they no longer had them...
We didnt want to pay the fee from the bank so we just took some cash and our atm cards last time
marley9808, we did it this last April 2011. I just checked with our local office here in Minneapolis and they still offer them with no fee.
I got mine at AAA for free, a couple weeks ago. I feel safer with them, I got pick pocket once a long time ago at the gas station and they didn"t touch them, only the ja money.
Thanks Ras.....wonder why ours doesn't carry them, maybe will check another AAA office. thanks!
