Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
Laugh when I hear the term, good old days, as I am sure there are many more to come, but these are a blast from our past visits to Negril. Some from Miss Gloria's yard with the infamous A-Frame. Also one of Barry, hasn't changed too much through the years. Went and had a cold one with him this March past.

Just up West End Road was the first place we stayed at called the White Bird cottages with Uncle Willy and Mama and their family. It was a great place, cheap clean and a good vibe. You could rent a cabin, rent a hammock or camp....and some wise words were posted around the property!!

A few pics of the roundabout in town, the hammock park in the cliffs with Campbell, and an early morning on Negril beach, as you can tell by the shadows! Maybe we were just heading home after a good show at the Treehouse....saw Rita Marley there one night with the I Threes and Ziggy. Oh, and parasailing off the beach, cause that was so safe then!!!!

And a few more randoms....the beach in front of Miss G's, The Rocky Dell, where Gus made the best lobster dinners in the West End, a great day spent sailing, and lastly the Patio at the T Water. Looked like a great place to have our wedding, and we did just that in '87.

Thanks for the pictures. I still stay at Barrys. My best fried the late Ken Kiesler stayed at Glorias from the 70s till the 90's. Great memories.

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
It's always nice to see how Negril was in days past. My memories of Negril began in 1990 and it certainly has changed.

By the early 80's Negril still hadn't grown too much, still not too many hotels and very few all inclusive hotels other than Negril Beach Village / Hedonism. There were still many Mom & Pops and you could still pitch a tent if so inclined. I didn't visit Negril between 1987 and 1997 and was surprised when I did return to see the rapid growth and development. Significant beach erosion, beach water wasn't nearly as clean and traffic was like I-95. Back in the early 80's you had a Supermarket at the Villas and a couple of grocery stores (Wharf Club Store) and that was it. Plenty of small shops to have a beer and food. Back then it was a rather inexpensive vacation where the exchange rate was still pretty even between USD & JD. Unfortunately times change but Negril will always be a special place. When did the A-Frame at Miss Gloria's finally come down??? That was a landmark!!!!

Hi hey_mon
If you ate at The Rocky Dell Cafe that had the Best Grilled King Fish, then you may have bumped in to Tony or May who lived right before Rocky Dell and could be found at Ricks with her bottle of mood helpers.

Hey Johng,
You are right about the beach being pretty sparse..... Hedonism,The Tree House, Alfreds, BarBBarn, Miss G's and of course the Negril Beach Club and the T Water where we were married in 87. Did not get back to Negril until '95 and not again until 2012 and then this year with our three kids 24,20 and 16. What a blast to see it through there eyes. We sat back and laughed a lot throughout the week as they got hustled, bartered and made there way through the week. We had a very good friend stay with us as their unofficial Jamaican godfather, a true rasta we have remained close with for 30 some odd years, so they had a slight advantage over us back in the day with him at their side. He is actually in the pic from '84 at the hammock park and we call him our brother from another mother!! As for the A Frame coming down, will have to leave that one to another boardie to answer....no idea! Our friends stayed in it, Kimbo and Marlene, and she said the thatched roof came alive at night with roaches tho!!! Yikes

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
I believe the A-frame came down after Miss Gloria died, not sure the year but late 89's

Hi Lane,
Quite likely did meet them, met so many great people with the best remedies for anything or everything that ailed you. Did not frequent Ricks really, but wore a path on that road just the same for a few years. Went and visited with Mr Gosnal, or as we called him back in the day, Gus, from the Rocky Dell. He runs the Primrose with his son Martin now, just up the road from the Hungry Lion, close to the old spot. He still has the same happy disposition...lol

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
hey_mon,
Yes mon, I'm sure you had quite a family experience. As far as the A-Frame thatched roof goes it might be best that you don't tell Marlene that the night life that came alive was actually rats and not roaches unless Jamaican roaches are a foot long, hairy and with a long tail.

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
Oh man this is too cool. My first of over 20 trips to the Rock was in 1981 and I stayed at WhiteBird. You have brought me back and I am so appreciative. Great pictures. The parasail pic off the beach reminds me of when the chute got caught on a fence and the dude was being pulled by the boat but hung up on the fence. Thank goodness the fence broke and the piece of fence that whipped toward the sailor missed him. It could have been ugly.

Anyone remember Moses who walked the west end road naked?

Ya, they don't take off from the land any more or by yourself. My wife got slammed into the side of a wooden landing in Orchi. Was windy and they missed a bit. The chute was more ragged than our sheets at that hole we stayed in. Very forgettable.

Hahahaha.......reminded me of our wedding trip and my Aunt used to like to bring back a little snack in her purse after dinner. Thought she was drinking a little too much rum as she was sure she had brought something back with her after dinner, but it was always gone when she went to get it!! She mentioned it to Mr Grant, the yardkeeper at the T Water and he came and set a trap to catch the "mouse". My Uncle laughed when he saw the size of the trap, and Mr Grant proceeded to chain it to the leg of the dresser. My Uncle said he couldn't wait to see the size of the mouse they were gonna trap with that!!!

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
hey-mon,
It doesn't matter what you call em, roaches, rats, mice, as long as they don't bite who cares. Whatever they were they had a taste for Ganja and chewed a hole in my friends blue jeans pocket while he slept luckily he wasn't wearing them at the time. So Miss Gloria's rats were the highest in Negril!!!!!!

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
Back in the early 80's I was there for a long long stay, and rented an old wooden cabin with a thatched roof at Perseverance on a monthly basis(across the road from Miss Mary's). It was the rainy season and there were land crabs everywhere. One night about 10:00 pm, as I was about to turn out the light and get into bed, I looked up at the roof and there was a huge crab hanging by one claw from the thatch just over the mosquito net above the bed. I tried dislodging it with a broom, but it just hung on tighter. It was low season and I was the only guest in the yard and the owner's house was dark and locked up for the night. I walked out to the road to see if anyone was around who could help me, but the only travellers on the beach road were more crabs. Finally one of the owners daughters got up to go to the bathroom, and she got the crab out of my cabin (by whacking it harder with the broom!). For the rest of my stay at Perseverance, I never went to bed without checking the entire cabin for critters!

Re: Negril early 80's...some of the Good Old Days!!!!
Nice. I miss the T-Water, our first Negril home back in 1991. Miss B, the other Miss B, was working there and is now at the CoCo La Palm. I remember parasailing, not off of the beach, but from a platform that was out in the ocean. Scary good fun. Just doesn't seem to be the same as landing on the back of a boat.

Oh man, these pics sure take me back to the Negril I fell in love with...I guess I'm getting old, but for me personally, Negril today is nothing compared to what the vibe was like back then.
