Anyone know if there is a "rooming house" near Samsara?
The last time I was in Negril I stayed at Samsara. While at on the rocks one night, I was talking to a guy who said he lived 2 places down from Samsara. If standing on the cliffs, looking out into the water, the owner of Samsara lives on the property next door on the left, and the property over was where this guy lived. At the edge of the Samsara property, I could see the property and him if he stood at the edge of that property. (I'll try to post a pic that shows the side and roof of the building).
I didn't ask him many questions about where he lived (conditions, etc), but I know there was always a bunch of other guys hanging out on the cliffs of the property. I have always been curious as to what that place is? Is it some sort of rooming house? Every guy pays for a bed or room? (I only saw men there). If it is some sort of low income housing, it is pretty luxury to have such a place right on the cliffs.. I thought that was odd.
Anyone have more information on this place?

I believe that wall with tile roof is Kaisers stage. that stage had the best mural of Bob Marley, cant belive they painted over that, miss that place, he probably lives at Ocean Edge. We used to stay at ocean edge in the 80's. at that time Kingsley ran ocean edge and it was a hopping place. Anybody remember that awesome diving board?? Family issues got in the way and the place closed up and became a rooming house. Wish they would at least try and clean up the road around there....getting kinda creepy in that area. Miss the days of Eric and Raffis place on the corner, eatin coco bread, laughing with Raffi waiting for ice and beer trucks. Man I loved Ocean Edge.

Thanks for the information!!
I am so intrigued.. the house just seems so out of place with all the hotels and houses along the cliffs.
Hoping someone has more information on Ocean Edge..
Are the owners locals and why are they using it for a rooming house? Why is this property not converted into a small hotel, or hostel?
Thank you so much to anyone who can give me answers! I appreciate it!

lol I'm not trying to stay there!
Just very curious about the place... seems so strange that a low income? rooming house is right beside such big hotels, and on the cliffs. Makes me wonder what the conditions are inside, how much it is to live there, etc.

Just want you to have a fun, safe trip and hug your pops when you get home!
Re: Anyone know if there is a "rooming house" near Samsara?
Maybe it is your sense of "intrigue" that causes your father to have heart palpitations about your going solo to Negril. This is time for a vacation and not being Nancy Drew or a Jamaican Social Worker. BTW, I am siding with your dad on your going solo but then again.... you had already decided to go before posting your desire for us to "convince him" anyways, right?
Peace and Guidance

I lived on Ocean Edge Lane (Lynch Top Lane) as far back as 1994 and actually started Negril.com there in 1995. Here are a few "blasts from the past" from 1995:
Christmas 1995:
http://www.realnegril.com/beingees/lyhist01.htm
and December 30th, 1995:
http://www.realnegril.com/beingees/lynchtop.htm
http://www.realnegril.com/beingees/be301295.htm
Lynchtop was the birthplace of Negril.com. Ocean Edge was a great place back when the Connell's were running the place, but it has been closed as a hotel for nearly a decade now. Some of the children I knew growing up on the lane are now respected business people in town. It has been great to see them grow up and succeed.
Since your father knows Negril so well, he knows what I am saying is correct. If you are seriously interested in purchasing the property, there are places on the internet to find out who owns it, but that place is not Negril.com.
If you are not serious in purchasing the property, to be quite frank, the owner deserves their privacy and they will receive it here on Negril.com. I am siding with Accompong on this one. Being an "amateur detective" such as Nancy Drew should be of no concern of yours while you are on vacation.
The privacy of the owner(s) take precedence here and they deserve their privacy, especially since this property is not in any way a tourism related property anymore.
Please just come down and have a great time as a tourist.
Re: Anyone know if there is a "rooming house" near Samsara?
I did not state I was interested in purchasing the property, wanting stay at or live on the property, nor did I express any desire to go to the property. I also never made it out to be a tourist destination of any kind.
I was just wondering what the place was.
I was in no way trying to intrude on the owners privacy whatsoever, and apologize if it came across that way.
I am sure there are many people who see buildings, churches, houses, etc while on vacation and for whatever reason are curious if anyone knows more information about what it is. That does not mean am I trying to be "Nancy Drew". I thought this was a place to ask such questions. I am new here so maybe I crossed some sort of line I'm unaware of by asking too many or too specific questions? If so, I apologize.
Re: Anyone know if there is a "rooming house" near Samsara?
JamaicaLove,
I am sure there was no harm intended, but I think the privacy issue information I am posting applies to pretty much every place.
Asking what the place was called is one thing and a perfectly fine question. It used to be Ocean Edge and closed about a decade ago. This is common knowledge.
But you were not "just wondering what the place was" as you just stated. You did ask who currently owns it, who currently lives there and why it is not being developed. That is where the privacy line was crossed. All private property owners do deserve certain privacy when it comes to their own property and they will receive it on Negril.com. If your Dad owned property here he would be granted the same respect regarding privacy.
To think of it another way, say for instance a friend invited me to your town for a vacation. I happened to be walking down your street and got curious about a particular house that seemed unusual to me for whatever reason. Let's assume for argument's sake it is your house. So I took a picture of the house that I was curious about which happened to be your house.
Would you and your Dad think it would be appropriate for me to post on your hometown website questions like who owns the house, who lives in the house and why arent they doing more to improve the house? Something tells me that you already know that this would be inappropriate. If not, just ask Dad.
I am pretty sure this "sort of line" applies everywhere, not just Negril or Jamaica. Asking the previous name of a place is one thing, but there is a reasonable expectation of privacy that should be respected everywhere, and especially in a tourist town when the property in question has no tourism related significance anymore.
Like I said, just come on down and enjoy yourself as a tourist.
If there is something of real historical or tourism significance, most times you will find it marked with a sign and someone will be charging you admission... (grin)
Re: Anyone know if there is a "rooming house" near Samsara?
I'm sorry, the way I worded my questions came across very wrong, my fault.
By "who" I was looking for a vague answer (ex: a local, a church, an organization, the government/city) I was not looking for the name of the person(s) who own the property (I have no need for such information, nor would I expect anyone to reveal such information).
The only reason I am curious is because it is right on the cliffs next door to hotels, which I thought was unusual, so I thought there might be an interesting story behind how it came to be. That is all. Just innocent curiosity, not trying to offend anyone in any way.
Again, sorry if my questions came across as digging for private information, that is not what I was after.

But.... not a place for a woman traveling solo for the first time, right?
Let's keep it real here. Saving money is one thing but saving your life is quite another.

I have said numerous times that I have ZERO wish to go to this place. I had just seen it, and was curious about it because of it's location. I am NOT looking to buy this property and definitely NOT looking to stay there or visit there while I am on vacation.
I honestly appreciate the concern, as I know this is not a place for travelers to go, especially solo women. But I think I have made my intentions clear in stating that I was just asking questions and have no interest in actually going there.
