Very nice!
This is really great news for those who walk from bar to bar ( or restaurant!) No more getting run over DRUNK!
this is a great improvement for negril but it doesn't really look wide enough to accommodate bicycles and pedestrians.
It must be the camera angle and lack of perspective, you could easily drive a car (and the backhoes being used to create it) down it. It is quite wide
I didnt measure it, but it is about 12 to 15 feet across, which is about 2 to 3 times the average width of sidewalks in North America.
In the picture, my car was parked in the space off the road and there was room on either side of the vehicle. The sidewalk is wider than that is...
And in case anyone is curious, Dr. McNeil states that "These plans, in essence call for the putting in of physical infrastructure, namely sidewalks with jogging and cycle tracks adequately lit and landscaped which would in turn encourage tourists to use and enjoy."
So not only are they wide enough, they will be well lit....
thanks for the info Rob, i'm so glad it will be done by the time i visit next. any idea when they might tackle the west end?
"The NWA CEO highlighted the fact that after the completion of the first 4KM, a long term partnership will be entered into between the TEF and NWA for the further expansion of the sidewalk and collateral works, as well as sidewalks in the west end to carry the project through to its logical conclusion."

This is from December 2012 announcement for the traffic lights (that are done), medians (that are done) and sidewalks on the beach road (that are being done) - which mentions the logical conclusion of sidewalks on the West End as well.
This is an educated guess, but since everything is being accomplished on time or earlier - I would assume that before next year (December 2013 - at the "official announcement" of the completion of the beach road projects) we should be hearing something about the time frame for sidewalks on the West End.
lol
I just can't comprehend how they will have the room on the west end to put in sidewalks unless they move walls and buildings????
Trying to understand which side of the road the sidewalk is on..Is it on the beach side of the road or the other side? This will be a great improvement!
Kevin,
That will be the case just as it is on the beach road sidewalk. They are using the universal concept of eminent domain, which is the power of the government to seize private property without the owner's consent. Historically, the most common uses of property taken by eminent domain are public facilities, highways, and railroads, and the owner is usually compensated with a fare market value price.
If you look at the picture I posted, it is facing the roundabout, starting from about the bridge over the South Negril River - so yes, it is on the morass side of the road.
I can't help feeling bad about all the small businesses, huts and shacks that will be turned upside-down because some tourists want to ride a bike. No more Kyng Sharlo, no more Sexy Rexy?
Rexy's cliffside shop has been closed for some time now. The owners of the land he was using are building a restaurant for their resort there. Rexy still has his large place across the road.
To finish the quote from Dr. McNeil earlier - "These plans, he continued, in essence call for the putting in of physical infrastructure, namely sidewalks with jogging and cycle tracks adequately lit and landscaped which would in turn encourage tourists to use and enjoy. As a result he reasoned, the value of properties along the same strip of sidewalk would increase dramatically as it would be well used by visitors."
The increased traffic from the sidewalk usage will actually encourage more walk in business for any business located along it. The small shack places will probably be hurt the least, as it is rather easy to move a shack back 15 feet to accommodate the new sidewalks.
For the smaller businesses - this may be the very best thing that ever happened to their business. A well lit sidewalk will encourage more business not just during the day but even into the evening hours.
Happy to hear this. I will most definitely use the sidewalks.
I know one person who's gonna be happy... the peanut man! Imagine how much time that sidewalk will shave off of his route... he'll be up and down whistlin all ovah the place!
This is great! really, really great!
I must say I was a 'doubting Thomas' when news of this first broke, but to see it coming together so quickly - yah, mon and big ups to all involved.
It will definitely change the experience of walking to/from town - for the good, and safety will be greatly improved.
Here's a thought - maybe people walking along the sidewalk will not be 'beeped' by route taxiis!! It makes sense right? Why beep a guy walking along the sidewalk, if he wanted a taxi he would be out on the road. Wouldn't that be great! I mean, think how many beeps will be eliminated if that happens. Getting 'beeped' 10 times a minute is annoying, so maybe these sidewalks will have a serendipitous noise reduction impact too.
Very exciting news. No more watching out for dips and holes when walking.
K3....great respone. Me personally...I think it is a good move as far as "you can't stop progress".....I still prefer the risk. That's why I love walking the West End. Just hav'n some some Fun, ya know. How ya do'in by the way?
Good to hear!
Any update on the sidewalk progress? How far has it been completed?
Sam...they r up to Grand Pineapple...most of the way is paved & other sections have been dug out & will be ready to pour very shortly....
Bnewb, did they figure out what to do in front of the Yoga Centre?
Nice! Thanks Lisa. As you know I do a lot of walking so I am hopeful they will be mostly complete by late November.
Mi Lady and I can't wait to take the new walk for a test drive in December.
I am so looking forward to being a street walker!:p
Hey Rob, what side of the Rd. are they on ? Been gone 4 some time and knew it was coming but I can`t remember what side it was on, shamrock side or NGP side?
Thanks in advance!
semi(and Crew):):)
BikerMike...the sidewalk is located on the Shamrock side or the morass side...across the road from the beach.
Jimbo needs pictures please?
Here is a picture taken back in July featured on our Negril Today pages!

being an advocate of this for a long time......
it was a pleasure to see the new sidewalks going in this summer on the beach road....
and when mi spoke to da workers mi told them thank you for doing such a good job........
their nice and wide so there is plenty of room for people to walk coming and going.........
been a real long time in coming.........medians will be helping a lot too .......
now I will be really excited when I see it happening on the West End Rd......
be interesting to see if they can make the sidewalk as wide on the West End Rd as they did on the Beach Rd...
mi kinda doubt it unless they start knocking done a lot of walls and fences......
it will be interesting to say da least.......especially when they get up to SamSara.....lol
Cool Runnings, Marko
