Bringing Household Items into Jamaica

we are bringing in a number of household items for our place in Negril and want to know what our options are for declaring goods or even if we need to? Can anyone share info on this topic please

I'm pretty sure "for your own personal use" enters into it, if you're not planning on selling or giving to a Jamaican, I believe you don't even mention it!

We have taken in quite a bit of household things in the past and never had a problem. We actually brought in a large ice chest full of things. We did have to move to the "other" line I think because there was a question whether it was full of food. Once it was determined that wasn't the case we were free to go with everything.

We bring stuff down every trip too. Coolers, flashlights, fans, etc. We usually either leave a cooler full with one of our local friends to store for us or just give stuff away as gifts/tips when we leave. Never had a problem with declaring anything.

I brought a food processor for St. Anthony's back in June. I declared it as new and had to go through the duty station one at MBJ. Since I wrote St. Anthony's on it they declared it used and thanked me. If it is for personal use I wouldn't even declare it.

Because I read that you had to go to a "different" line ,this summer I brought a duffle crammed with pack packs,didn't say a word on customs about it,flew right through:)

Striper, the reason they had us go through the other line was because everything was in the really large ice chest. Normally we have regular suit cases and sail right through.

Yeah we'll to me it was a reason to see if I could get away with something:)

mi been bringing personal stuff down to the apt for the past year and never had a problem.......
don't think they are too concerned about your used dishes, flatware, plastic containers, etc....lol

I've carried household stuff in my suitcase with me and never been asked anything.

I'll be send a barrel or two next month to Linston but in my name. We'll see what happens.

I just sent some mill saw blades to someone in Silver Spring. They went by USPS International mail. It was delivered to the Sheffield Post Office with 4,700 JA due in duty. These were new blades sent from the dealer so there was duty.

But what a pleasure to do everything by phone no problem!

As to used household goods shipped in barrels........I have a resisted title in my name for 40 years, a TRN, electric and water bill in my name and an expired work permit and residency card from 30 yrs ago.

I'm sure I can clear the barrel with no duty or perhaps the standard barrel fee (5,500 I think)

The trick will be to not have to be there to receive them. We shall see

I've never had a problem-all in my suitcase and its for my personal use- That being said ,if its brand new i would make sure to have the receipt ...in case they do want you to pay duty and try to charge you way more than what its worth-the receipt will help i've been told..
