Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
YIPPIE, Jim and I are going to be in Jamaica for the Christmas Holidays. We have not been to Jamaica at that time of year. After seeing the increse in prices, it may be the last holiday we spend there ~ LOL
What fun stuff can we expect to see. And what about Boxing Day?
Thanks

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
We had a blast for New Years. We got there Dec 29. Bunny Wailer was playing that night. He stayed in the room right next to us. Then we saw the Mighty Diamonds NYE. Met a lot of fun people.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
We have been the past 2 holiday seasons although 2 years ago we arrived on Christmas and departed on NY; so it was a quicky trip.
Boxing Day is another holiday for Jamaica and one has to plan for it - Cambios and HiLos/Valuemaster are closed. We were invited to a party at a friend's house in Lucea that night and had an absolute blast with his family and friends getting back to our cottage late (for us).
Other than that, the beach is pretty much the same although everyone is in a great mood. You will just love NYE - lots of excitement and the beach is packed all night long. The weather is perfect. There's music, parties, people watching! We love that time of year in Jamaica!
Helen and I will be there also, arriving on December 22 and staying until January 4. Maybe we'll hook up for some laughs.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
I forgot to also tell you that most of the restaurants have a special dinner for Christmas Day and on New Years like in the states.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Its the best!! You will love it...see yoy both then!!

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Our first Christmas/NY also - we'll have to do a bar crawl that week! We arrive Christmas Day - it's my understanding is that stores etc are open on Christmas but NOT Boxing Day? Is that right??

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
New Year ’s Eve 2011 we had dinner at the Rockhouse and then went to a “white party” at the Caves. It was a blast. They launched lanterns around midnight and that went for miles. We have never been for Christmas, but I would recommend bringing a few strands of Christmas lights and a cheap extension cord for your balcony or patio.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
The first year we ever went to Jamaica, it was over the Xmas-New Year holiday. One of my favorite pictures is of the wife and I sitting on a very buff santas lap with some amazingly attractive "elves". He came to the beach on a speed boat.

The Santa song I remember from living in Grand Cayman
" Santas got a sunburn,
Santas got a sunburn,
That's why he's so red!"
Santa did indeed arrive via a speed boat up on shore, with short red velvet shorts on and a big red tshirt

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Our Santa was shirtless, shorts, hat and boots. Kind of looked like a chippendales Santa... I think my wife likes the picture of Santa better than her husband....

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Not booked yet, but have been there for the past, I think 4 years? We usually wait for the last minute deals that week. Have not been there for Christmas just boxing day maybe in a couple years when the youngest is a little older!

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Christmas in Jamaica is cooler than other months so make sure to expect that --- one year I actually wore jeans and my jean jacket
the best thing about that time of the year is FOOD - all kinds of things are in season to eat that you may have missed during the months you usually come
Christmas and Boxing Day are both relatively quiet days. The big gift giving is not obvious. More family time together.
The restaurants will have a big dinner on Christmas and NYE --- make reservations --- especially for NYE --- you have never seen that many cars and people on Beach Road --- I promise
last Christmas I was at Zimbali Retreats --- perfect day for me --- perfect hosts - and more than perfect food lol
and like PGW said --- make sure to get money --- ATM's start dwindling down Christmas Eve and no money until after Boxing Day
and if a Jamaican family invites you to dinner --- GO! :-)

Indeed!!!! Do yourself a big favor and GO!! Nothing any better than Christmas celebration with your Jamaican friends. Truly, one FINE FEAST!!! The holidays are truly special in Jamaica.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Christmas and NYE in Jamaica is the best! Happy moods all around! We did Xmas dinner at Lingah by the Sea at NBCC and it was really good. Not sure if they are doing their buffet this year but I'm sure we'll find some place to go. The weather was nice but for me, I refused to wear any cold weather clothes in Jamaica and it was funny to see the overnight security wrapped up in jackets and wearing gloves and hats. The se was calm for the most part but there were a few days with crashing waves. My absolute favorite was seeing Negril Beach lit up with bonfires and all the paper lanterns for NYE.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
We will be in Negril for Christmas and New Years this year too. We are doing Nov 30 thru March 8th this trip.
Really looking forward to a chilled-out Jamaican Christmas - had enough of the 'over-the-top' Canadian Christmasexcesses.
We will be in Redground for 2 months and on the beach for one. We'll be needing a scooter. Anyone have an idea where and how much for a good scooter for two months?
-
Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
If you can afford it buy a used one before you go.
You're in Red Ground for two months so you know the running's......
Buy and sell.....

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
Hey, we finally get to see you guys. That will be excellent. Maybe we can do a lil side trip again.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
We've never been to Negril over Christmas / New Years. This year we will be at Catcha Falling Star for New Year's Eve. Any one know if we should make a reservation for supper even though we are staying there? Has anyone been to Catcha for New Year's Eve? Is it a good place to ring in the New Year? It does sound like the beach would be a good pick too. I'm just wondering what your thoughts are, it sounds like the road gets pretty blocked up, so I'm assuming if you're already on the Cliffs, it may be wise to plan your night up there. Maybe there is other great spots around Catcha we can just walk to. Any suggestions???? We don't really need a huge party, but some entertainment or an upbeat atmosphere is definitely needed.

Re: Christmas and the New Year in Jamaica
my favorite part of being there Christmas is getting to meet folks from "town" that come over to vacation --- also all the seasonal foods (sorrel) at that time of year --- if you have friends there - try and get an invite for Christmas dinner :-)
be prepared for "Christmas breeze" --- one year i actually had to wear jeans and my jean jacket . . . next year it was hot
watching the fireworks on the beach on NYE is something you won't forget (along with the very crowded beach road)
as mentioned --- get your money early - i experienced no money in the ATM on christmas eve :-(
