Crazy airfare cost!!!

Well, I think I waited too long to book my Christmas/New Year reach! I was hoping for some kind of dip...it happened last year, but no such luck. Looks like I will be paying upwards of 1500.00 dollars, and that is with a 6 hour overnight layover on the way back home. At this point, my preferred airline doesnt have any flight available to Toronto so that I can get on a plane to MoBay :( .......

My travel agent is working on the best option, maybe she can get it down a few dollars.

So....if you havent booked for the holidays yet....get on it ASAP. I did some research this morning...more people travelling then last year, higher fuel costs. Don't wait any longer if you are planning to go!

oh my! $1,500!? I hope you are planning a nice lengthy stay for that price. But you are right about grabbing it when you see it. I missed a lot of good fares waiting for the price to drop. Instead it kept going up.

oh i hate this game, my flights have been hovering around $730 but dipped down to $610 at one point but i thought it was way too early to buy and was hoping it might go below $600.
now i'm worried that i may have missed that price.

Saw some flights from Toronto to mobay on travel zoo a few weeks back. $420 until year end.

I've been looking Westjet from Hfx for February and its running $740-790. It's a direct flight on Mondays and Fridays. Next time it dips slightly, I'm grabbing it!

I just did a quick check on Vayama, depart 12/24 return 1/2 $1000.00 all in

I did a search using the Matrix airfare search (can't buy on the site, but it does find deals, then you can hit up the airline directly to purchase) Dec 24 to Jan 7 for $862, all in.

We used to do that or Funjet Flights out of Milwaukee, now it is cheaper to go AA out of Ohare. I was so excited last year when they announced that apple going to fly Jamaica out of Rockford, but then I saw the price :(.

Thanks for the help everyone. Much appreciated...but with trying to get as many days as possible and still being in the dates that work will allow me to be away, I am trapped in a window of time that seems to be when the airlines are costing the most. I also just can't accept 12 hours for a layover somewhere...I have seen some prices that were better on the flight comparison sites, but when you go in further, you see these long layovers or 2 or 3 connections.

I have accepted the fact that I am paying 1500.00 but getting the dates and flights that I need. Heading to the travel agent to book now :)

1500 bucks is about my total budget for an entire 10 day trip PP, flights included. yikes.

If you want direct flights from the Canadian prairies, it's gonna cost $1,200 per person return. You might find something cheaper but I'd be surprised. We are flying on air miles this time. It's about $65 per person return. Very good deal BUT......18 hours each way. Should be interesting.

I managed to get my preferred airline....also no ling layover, but i lost 2 days in Jamaica....boo. Still....IM GOING!!!!

Wow! That is unreal.....

The most I have paid for FIRST CLASS from So Cal was approximately $1100. It is amazing how rates have shot up, than again travel is also up. Simple supply and demand as well as less competition.

Not sure I follow that gas prices are up. If jet fuel runs close to the auto gas prices, not in cost but flucuation, it should be cheaper this year. Gas is .20 cheaper year over year in the US.

Jamaica is still a great value relative to most Caribbean locations. Those prices are yet to chase me away.

We've been watching both WestJet & Air Canada and had also been waiting for the dip in prices. Looks like we'll be spending approximately $1,250.00 per person this year. Still hoping for a sale or promo. See you on the island :cool:

Pricing is entirely arbitrary now, and I am convinced it is to make up for the "lean years" the airlines had. Our tickets from Philly (a heck of a lot closer than boogers west coast rates) were just under $3000 us for the both of us. I cannot even imagine how much that went up for Xmas. I will be traveling during the thanksgiving time frame, but it's still a bit out of hand, I think.

Wow, those prices are unreal! We recently booked for Feb. down to Puerto Rico out of ORD for $262 per person direct flight. Had to jump on it as we haven't seen them this low for a very long time.

Orchid, You'll save a likkle cash on the taxi ride to Negril, at least, and we will save you more by buying that first Mojito at the Parrot! Looking forward to meeting up with you at sangsters!

I agree on the arbitrary statement....and for all I know, there could be a dip at some point. If I didnt have to connect to a "hub", I would probably have waited it out a little longer. I think I panicked a little yesterda (lol) when I saw that the connections to Toronto were pretty much gone. Life would be a whole lot easier if I could get a direct flight!

If we were in a hub like Toronto or Montreal we would be able to get on an American airline for much cheaper but having to fly to the hubs puts a lot of extra $$$ on the flights. I am happy you are going. Enjoy

Us also, that would eliminate 2 days of travel for use, we live 20 minutes or so from that Airport, and we would go to Chicago to sleep each way.......I heard flights are not full, I bet they wont renew their contract....The airport "subsidizes" the Airlines to make up for the empty seats, that is why the empty seats, rather than sell them a a reduced cost (charters use to do this) as the departure date grows closer, they take off, with the subsidence of the Airport money, and with out the extra weight of people sitting in those seats and luggage...equals less fuel needed for the same trip...MORE PROFIT.........the world is a bottom line place $$$$$
nobody passes the savings along to the consumer any more :(

I know that West Jet always has a seat sale in September for Early Winter flights (Up to February) and it should be appearing in Travel sections & their Web site soon. We are going with Sunwing from Ottawa Direct this year for $550.00 (all inc.) for a week in December.They offer meals & champagne & OJ for Breakfast & Wine with dinner and nice big comfy seats. Watch for the Seat sales.!!

Just clicked around a bit, and the fares from Los Angeles during Christmas time are actually quite reasonable.

Just a thought ... can you get a flight to Buffalo NY .. then connect to MBJ ??
We've flown out of Buffalo a few times & the prices aren't bad ..Mind you we can drive to Buffalo in 45 mins

Problem is no air carrier out of YYZ .. has to have a "sale" to MBJ ..
they know the flights are gonna be full ..

Just booked my late Oct trip from MCO. 170 round trip incl tax.

Used 100 in Chase Sapphire bonus. Nice to be so close to MBJ

Westjet just concluded one seat sale for travel UPTO Feb. 5. Thier next seat sale should cover my travel dates. Price right now is $1065 (WJ) and $1300 (AC) from Winnipeg.

Yeah. It's a real jam job for the dates I'm looking for around thanksgiving. Almost double here too. a couple quotes I saw today even had me connecting through Toronto and MTL for a flight of like 22 hours that was $680. I'm flying out of Newark; makes no sense to me.

Could have gotten $375 round trip in June but didn't. Now it's around $500 from ORD or MDW. Farecompare says to wait until at least 3-1/2 months before the flight. We'll see.

the Holidays are always sky high for airfare........
the best bet is to go for New Years week and not Christmas Week......a lot less money
for example Tampa to MoBay Roundtrip on Spirit for New Years week is $277 R/T 12/30 - 1/7.......
guess what it is from 12/21 - 1/4.........it's $597.73!

Hey Mikey-try Caribbean Air out of JFK. I looked a few days ago and direct flts were a little over $500/pp. Newark is closer for us too but can't ever get a reasonably priced flight to MBJ. We booked a few months ago and got ours for a little over $400 each.
