Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
My plans suddenly changed from Negril to Mobay due to an offer I couldnt refuse...lol..I will be staying at Sunset Beach Resort in Mobay...I"m a Negriller at heart and when I stay in Negril I usually go to Jungle, Margaritaville, Scrub A Dub live music on the beach spots like that just to give you a lil bit of what mi like...
So any information you can share of hot spots, must do' and live bands on the beach (my fav) would be great!
Also, are there any bike rentals in Mobay?
I posted in Mobay but no response so figured I'll post here with the experts :D
Thanks much!

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
There really isn't any place in MoBay like Negril, but you do have a some familiar choices. There is the Hip Strip that includes Margaritaville and BlueNotes which is a night club in a similar (but different) vein as the Jungle.
Your hotel will have some live entertainment since there aren't live weekly beach bands like there are in Negril. Some fun beach places include Doctors Cave Beach - one of the first major tourist beaches in Jamaica. There is a charge to use the beach, and a couple great places to eat and drink on at Doctors Cave.
Another interesting beach spot is located believe it or not at the very beginning of the airport runway. You can sit and enjoy cold drinks and great jerk chicken while watching the planes come in.
For something completely different, you may want to try the Montego Bay Yacht Club. You do not need to be a member to go to the bar and restaurant. The food is excellent and the view is great if you like a marina setting.
I am sure others will have some ideas - but this should get you started.

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
also . . . Cornwall Beach (next to Doctor's Cave - renovated within the last 2 years or so)
i spent 4 nights at Sunset Beach - loved it for what it was worth - hard to pull myself out of there --- that swim up bar has a seat with my name on it :-)
--- make reservations as soon as you get there to try the different restaurants (included) it was nice to be served and not do buffet all the time ,
nude beach :-)
and if you need anything just take 2 steps out the gates --- there are a plethora of drivers on the other side :-) i escaped out there a few times --- just to be able to talk with some Jamaicans

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
I think in mobay you are close to rocklands bird sanctuary if you are interested in that...it's supposed to be very cool.
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
lol.......you staying at the old SeaWinds Hotel(remember Ramboo?) which is now Sunset.......
they have a beach there as well as a pool etc but it's kinda an oasis there......
it's kinda removed from the main drag but you shouldn't have too much of a problem getting out....
it's no Negril but it's still Jamaica and there is always sumthin to do.......
be careful with a bike der.......drivers are nuts in Jamaica.....lol
Cool Runnings, Marko

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
lol yep the old seawinds --- the first time i stayed there - my mouth flew open when i say the old Cave (disco) was now the lobby --- most of the workers weren't born then lol --- spent a couple of NYE in there
sea urchins there --- take water shoes
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
for more local flavor --- check out Walter Fletcher beach (Aquasol)
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Marko/Rambo - Do you still need the sharks teeth to buy a drink at the cave disco there? LOL
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Try Peir 1 on the weekends. make sure to get jerk chicken at the Pork Pit. if your looking for something like scrub a dub there is a few strip bars in mo bay as well. won't be hard to find
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Say it ain't so, you did not give up CoCo for Mo Bay ? Well, something tells me you will have loads
of fun wherever you go, and now you will have a reason to get back to CoCo and meet me some day down the line. Have a great time!!!
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Pier One for sure, and make a trip out to Scotchies for some of the tastiest, smokey-flavored jerk ever!

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Hey, I'm having a similar dilemma (but since it's Jamaica- I can't really call it a dilemma).
I'm a true Negril lover and have been there many times, I'll be back many more times. I've found a great deal and I'm doing a mother/daughter, friend & friend's grandson trip in Trelawny. We have a good friend stopping nearby on a cruise ship (Falmouth) for a day and we need to think of a way that we can enjoy a day together in paradise. The dilemma might be 3 ladies aged 50-mid 60's (fit and not so fit)and 2 younger people. How can we all enjoy the day without waterfall climbing and such other adventures? I've done the most touristy things in the past and would just love to see natural beauty and enjoy the day and keep the 2 younger ones happy at the same time. Any ideas? I feel like a trader to Negril, but I promise... I'll be back for sure. Some of the places I've been to were definitely worth repeating like YS falls (since I don't have to climb up slippery rocks, Rockland's bird sanctuary etc.)

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Jamakafun ..... If your family/friends will be there overnite, Glistening Waters is fascinating at nite-time. Bbout a half hour drive east of Falmouth is Discovery Bay. There's the Green Grotto caves in D-bay - they give tours, the caves have steps down to an underground cenote where a James Bond clip was filmed.

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Thank you Everyone for the great list of things to do!
This is what I came up with
The Pier
Doctor's Cave Beach
Walter Fletcher beach (Aquasol)
Margaritaville Thursday night
Hip Strip - I'm assuming it's a strip with restaurants, clubs, shopping etc.?
Also, I'm assuming I need a taxi for these places?

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Update: I will be staying at The Gloucestershire Hotel a couple days in addition to Sunset Beach trying to get AI & Non-AI experience..
Is Margaritaville & The Pier close to Glou hotel or I need a taxi?
-
Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Oh yes..the sharks teeth...the bartenders would pocket teeth (2us dollars each) during their shifts and sell 'em later for .50 cents each...we stayed cheap many times..place closed afer Ja. Govt took over (even got more corrupt lol)...the resort is in a nice setting...quick trip to town...peace and quiet back "home"...it was a good place to hide out during violent elections years past...some taxi drivers stayed overnight after carting fares out there, too dangerous too go back at night.....wonderful place "Cave Disco"

Gloucestershire is on the strip --- you can walk to Margaritaville, The Brewery, Pork Pit --- the Pelican (for food) -- you will need a taxi to get to Pier One
Gloucestershire has been remodeled in the last couple of years --- good reviews on trip advisor
have fun!

oh..??..
really..??..
if that is the case,
then you MUST-Go..!!... to St.James Street
let me repeat:::>> you MUST go to Saint James Street..!!..
when i first read this thread a few days ago, my head started to spin around and around and around.
i could chat from now 'til Christmas about MoBay & StJamesSt & environs [but am gonna be brief]
GOOD food, great-prices, EXCELLENT vibes, etc etc blah blah raa raa
do a Google-map, or some online map of the city
..the internet is your friend, mi fren
.....good-good maps out der
........ALL-ways get your bearings (BEFORE-hand)
with your back to the bay/sea, if you stroll about 3-4 blocks in-land you'll hit St.James Street. On & around that street is EVERY-ting --- EVERY-THING..!!!..
Food..??.. ---- in that part of Jamaica, MoBay is where folks go to get stuff, or take care of bizness, that they can't find in their town/village/etc. So, while doing-whatever they gotta eat at some point.
Tourist don't frequent this area, so everything is geared for the residents.
They be-selling stuff all over the place ---- in shops, likkle shops, big shops, on the sidewalks, in the alleys, everywhere. You gotta check-out the '..shoe-market.' ---- Wow..!!... --- nuff-nuff shoes der
opps..!!..
'spose be chattin' 'bout food.
you'll find sit-down eateries of all kinds, with ridiculous-ly low prices for outstanding stuff. Homemade cooked-from-scratch day-OF stuff.
you may see somebody munching on something along the road/street/sidewalk --- ASK them, "..WHERE you get that..??.."
or
as i once did::>> mi-SAY::>> "..I'm hungry ... WHERE can i get something to eat..???.."
*discover-ed quite a few GREAT places by asking so.
one popular place had a buffet-line steam-table set-up that will blow you mind with options/selections-available. And of course, tipping is not expected or required.
oh
oh::>>before i forget:::>>> for the squeamish(sp?), picky-eaters, ALL these eating places are CLEAN CLEAN super-CLEAN [[period]]
for me,
a treat is always the MoBay bus park
great snacks, foods, and fun people-watching place.
as mentioned, along the side-walk you'll find sales-people selling this and that. I've seen some cute women's undergarments on those sidewalks. Cute stuff ---- next trip i'm gonna get some as gifts for a few boardies, as i run into them.
Nevertheless,
a tip::>> lot of folks work in MoBay, so,
they gotta eat breakfast na tru
if you're up early
GO to the bus park area, and i guarantee you'll stumble upon some-somebodies selling some WONDER-FULL breakfast stuff. It WON'T be eggs & bacon & pancakes, crepes, sausage, Cheerios, etc, but it'll BE GOOD..!!..
in the area
are a couple markets, too
...get some fresh fruits, drinks, etc.
* sigh *
fingers tired
jus' GO to St.JamesStreet
lata
oh
oh::>> one last thing-y::>> check out the CaptainsTable Bakery .... KFC... the pattie shop (can't remember if it's TanTan or JuicyBeef)
me gone

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
and if you decide to take a "tour" -- you are in the perfect position - MoBay --- to hit up ochie or Negril for a day trip --- they do tours from sunset --- but i suggest walking out the gate for a better price
also you know there is sunset at the palms in Negril? maybe you can trade off one of your free nights to stay there --- it's kind of far out -- but i think you know how to get around :-)
take pictures!

Seveen, i'm SO-glad you mention-ed that.
'twas something i had thought about, too
via Ja-route-taxi/van/bus system it's a QUICK fun-fill-ed, relaxing ride from MoBay to Negril.... CHEAP too.!!..
play that "..from-foreign tourist.." card, and you'll get the seat up-FRONT with the driver.
if were-me,
i would make the Negril trip in the morning, during *rush-hour*,
then return to MoBay during the evening rush-hour....
....'cause PLENTY more-frequent buses/vans/taxis
remember::>> rush hour there, just like in-foreign ---- lots of folks moving same-way as in-foreign ..... ergo, more available vehicles. ... shouldn't take more than an hour (even with stops along the way).

[[[ below, an aside, for Seveen only ---- all you's others can ignore ]]]
my dear Seveen ---- that's a cute avatar pic,
BUT i *think* the one with you on the lounge chair, feet pointed at camera, with the purple-blueish swim suit is MUCH betta
* sigh *

Re: Fun In Mobay like Negril...?
Smokeys Joes.....great lobster........and Tiger's Buffett........both great local places with also local foods..not many tourist's BUT VERY tourist friendly........Smokey Joes down a walkway to the end, worth hunting down....Tigers looks out onto the busy street..great people watching while eating..........

Do do that..!!..
you'll be over-glad you did
:-)
two-more thing-ys:::
first,
mid-way along the street is Sam Sharpe Square
I like to use it as a chill-out, people-watching spot
grab a pattie at the near-by shop
and chill
second,
a *trick* I *learned*:::>>>> wear sunglasses
sunglasses tend to throw-off folks (as they try to size-you-up)
...they can't see your eyes
...don't know where you looking
...masks some of your body-language
Check the guys in Negril along the beach, as they scope-out tourists:::: they wearing sunglasses
