The new chat for webcasts
In case people didn't know. Rob has updated the prehistoric chat room that was probably optimized for Netscape Navigator - to a much more modern chat room.
In doing this. The Chat now works for iOS devices. At least it did on my ipad. I know for some, this was an obstacle in joining the chat.
I think it's a great update, thanks Rob.

Re: The new chat for webcasts
Cool! I'll have to check it out.
I actually just figured out how to view the webcasts on my iPad, so this would be a nice compliment.

I have meaning to post instructions, since I didn't find any in the forums and had to fumble through it myself.
I will do that when I get home - for some reason, realnegril is blocked at my office.

Re: The new chat for webcasts
I am an old dog and tried the new chat one time, and so far refuse to go back, too complicated for me, and the name is stupid!

Haven't been on one in awhile, but used to use flip4mac to sign in. Maybe it still works.
-
Re: The new chat for webcasts
Just curious...what would someone "chat" about? Maybe I'm missing something but I just don't see any attraction.

Re: The new chat for webcasts
Craig,
The live chat allows people to ask questions and everyone in the chat gets the chance to instantly respond to their questions.
It is different from this message board or any other similar forums which can take up to hours to get the response you need to know. The answers during the chat are instantaneous!
And since the webcasts and chats are live you get the opportunity to communicate directly with the folks watching the webcast! Family members can wish their family back home a big hello. Friends can tease their friends who are watching.... it is all meant as a fun way for those here to interact with those who were not able to come down with them.
And the webcasts are and always will be a totally free service - you can choose to use it and it will not add any expense to your vacation!
-
Re: The new chat for webcasts
By the way, the new chat works on phones and tablets as well. It is a major improvement! Thank you to all those who helped us to test out the new chat!

Hey Lorax - when I post my instructions for viewing the webcasts on an iPad, they should work on a full size Mac (Mac OS), as well.
Sorry I didn't get to posting the instructions last night. It's not the most intuitive process and I wanted to make sure my steps were clear. Again, I will try post them after I get home from work.

Re: The new chat for webcasts
I'm still trying to figure out how to see the webcast on my Android phone. Rob gave me the names of a few apps, but I have yet to have any luck. I usually watch and chat from my home pc anyway. I have yet to use the new chat, but I should be able to figure it out. Perhaps Saturday will be the day.

Re: The new chat for webcasts
How to view the Real Negril Webcasts on an iPad
1) Download the VLC Media Player app for the iPad. (There are other media players that will probably work, but VLC is reliable and it's free.)
2) Go to RealNegril.com and make sure that there is a webcast in progress.
3) Open VLC Media Player on your iPad
4) Press the orange cone icon in the upper left hand corner of VLC.
5) Select "Open Network Stream".
6) Paste or type the following address into the address field: mmsh://realnegril.com:3774/RealNegrilBroadcast2?MSWMExt=.asf
7) press the "Open" button.
Viola! The webcast stream should open in VLC. If you install VLC on full size Mac computer (e.g. Mac OS), the same process should work. You can also bookmark or save the link in VLC, so that you can go right to the webcast next time.
I think the issue some people have with viewing the webcasts on non-Windows machines is two-fold. 1) Since the webcast is designed to be viewed on Windows Media Player, non-Windows environments don't know which application to use to open the stream, and 2) when you click on the link in RealNegril to view the webcast, that http link actually re-directs you to the address above. For some reason (at least on my iPad) that re-direct doesn't happen - that is why you have to manually put that address into VLC.
Hopefully this will work for everybody!

Re: The new chat for webcasts
Thanks Mike, I'll give it a try...

Re: The new chat for webcasts
VLC also works great on Macs. Flip4Mac used to be the preferred method but I don't think it works anymore.

Yessir! Jan 30th to Feb 6. Staying on the West End. This will actually be our first trip during the busy season. I love Negril when it's quiet, but we wanted to experience it with the crowds and excitement, at least once. Plus, it will be nice to escape the winter cold.

Awesome! I'm glad you're back up and running.
It worked for me, too, on my iPad. Did anybody else give it a try?
