Definitely Bob's "Legend" . Toots & The Maytals are good. Ziggy & Stephan Marley, Jimmy Cliff, ska, like Millie Smalls & The skatalites. Dennis Brown. Go to youtube. Good Luck !

Lucky Dube was great choice jsteil, also add some jospeph hill "culture" and third world in there!
and definetly morgan heritage and tony rebel....
Don't leave out some newer up & coming Calif./US based bands ..
not true roots .. but .. Killar none the less
The Aggrolites/John Browns Body/Trbal Seeds/Stick Figure - (very chilled )
10 Ft. Ganja Plant ..
& (of course) my name sake band ... Slightly Stoopid (Top of the World ) CD
Since you mentioned "new" bands, I'll toss in the Bluebeats and the Slackers.
Another side note ... open up your ears to
the Thievery Corporation ...
Warning Shots(2005) - single
Originality (2006) -single
Babylon Rewound (2004) - CD
they are a blend of so many styles ..
not EVERYONE'S style ..but an interesting listen .. & wicked LIVE !!!
SS...speaking of CD's there is a guy up on the westend that has all kinds of CD's for sale that he mixes up. Think he is located somewhere around Negril Escape but not positive. I bought a bunch from him in February for my son and he loved them all (my son is a big fan of slightly stooped). Does anyone know the guy I'm talking about? His name escapes me and would be nice to put a name with a face when I take my son to meet him in December! My tastes are more towards the Maytals , Dennis Brown, Peter Tosh, etc....and those CD's were just as good from him!
Over the years .. I've burnt CD's ..& taken them down (tips for Cabbies/bartenders Etc)
thinking of loading up a couple of USB sticks this time around
& am always on the look out for new music ..
last reach it was alot of Ska/Rocksteady
usually buy 5-10 per visit
..by all means post a location & contact name ..we don't go till April ..
SS...I'll try and get a pic and location for you. My son is 19 and likes a wide range of music, I am partial to a lot of it too....listening to Dirty Heads right now. I think if you take music down to the guy on the cliffs you could barter and both come out winners
I'm not sure if it's roots reggae, but Montego Bay (Bobby Bloom) is the first reggae song I recall hearing the U.S. circa 1970.
And it's a song about visiting JA.
Another non-roots classic is Dreadlock Holiday by 10cc.
In the past ..I've downloaded podcasts..
Dubsession ... long sets .. most well over an hour long (abit "chatty" ) .. ton's of variety
with tracklistings http://www.dubsession.com/
& Big Mikey Dread
DubXanne-
Police In Dub
worth a listen ..
I just re-read the thread and Dave and Ansell Collins - Double Barrel - is another great old reggae tune, that's often overlooked.
& the Aggrolites are an EXCELLENT band to see live ...
as they play alot of smaller venues..without having to take out a second mortgage
who doesn't love a little "Dirty Reggae"
... big fan of the Easy Star All-stars.. Dub side of the Moon (gotta watch the Wizzard of Oz to this one )
& The Lonely Hearts Dub Band
new release ..Thrilla ( not so much )
Great thread!
Looks like I got a lot of new music to check out.
(I have heard SS a few times and thought they were pretty cool)
How about another couple of older roots reggae -- Half Pint and Super Cat
Sometimes I find Reggae remakes a tad cheesey .. ( let's face it ..most remakes) (regardless of genres)
But these tracks are blazin' ..
Wayne Wade's version of Lady ..
& The Pioneers version of Papa Was A Rollin' Stone
Anything by Steal Pulse, Third World, Luciano, Bushman, Warrior King, Ritchie Spice, Burning Spear......
Thanks so much everyone! downloaded over 300 songs so far. BUT.... Think the constant Reggae music in the house is starting to wear on the kids LOL
My son's birthing song was ..
Could You Be Loved by Bob ...
So, he's got no choice
Mind U with some 13,000 + tracks ..it's not all reggae ..all the time
Tuesday morning traffic jam playlist ...
Delroy Wilson's - Gave You Love

- feel free to copy & paste to Youtube
hey Butch, the guy your talking about is called Doc. The music dr.
I always buy my cd's from him. He is by Negril Escape and the "car wash" I tell him Roots Reggae and no dancehall and he always gets me what I don't already have. I asked him 3 years ago how he does that and he told me he keeps a "log" for his repeat customers.
Thanks yamon!! I will hit him up next week....I can't wait to get some new CD's made up and introduce my son to him!
