Ganja around my children
Am I crazy to think this is wrong? I asked a Rasta to move away and seems like him vex. It’s all around them right now. The only option is to bring them back to the room. I would think this would be common sense but it’s the culture. Although our cousins respect the kids. Sorry just venting. BA

Rasta is about respect...it's not "culture" to be rude. He showed you & your children no respect at all.
I'd guess he's not really Rasta as I've never known any true Rastas to behave that way.

I don't think you're crazy, just overly sensitive perhaps. In Negril, some people smoke Ganja. Use it as a teaching method to open a conversation with your children about Ganja and that open line of communication will benefit you/them when you need to further discuss other things they will be exposed to in life. Otherwise, you should ask the dude guzzling a beer to move away as well. My kids are now 13. They were exposed to the smell of Ganja in Negril at a very early age. That allowed me to discuss it with them at an early age. Now years later, we can openly discuss the other things they will be exposed to in life with the appropriate emphasis of urgency that the topic requires. What sticks with them more than the smell and presence of Ganja from their early years was the tourist on the beach who was so sloppy drunk that he was falling in the ocean. That was a unique visual aide in discussing with them the effects of alcohol and certainly balanced out the glorification of it that they see in advertising on a daily basis.

Re: Ganja around my children
If a smoker is so close that the exhaled smoke is in your proximity (face) then should the smoker have Covid, the infectious particles are in the smoke as well. A contact buzz that could turn deadly.
A person drinking does not pose the same health risks unless they are sitting too close. Plus there is absolutely no possibility of a contact buzz.
Exhaling smoke is an active action that projects further, just as talking loudly, yelling or singing. Smokers must take this into consideration.
A true Rasta would respect the rights of children and probably move on their own accord out that respect.

Re: Ganja around my children
Not all dreads are Rasta. And not all Rasta wear dreads. A real Rasta would show respect.

Ras, you are right. I shouldn't have assumed. He wasn't the only one I had to ask either- i just thought it would be common sense. I suppose one could argue the detrimental affects of ganja smoke around children, but personally, i don't want mine exposed to it. No judgements to people who smoke it- just not around young children.

Re: Ganja around my children
Well, I suppose it all depends upon how close Mr. Rasta was sitting when the incident occurred. No need to condemn the man as rude when that important bit of information is unclear.

Re: Ganja around my children
Well that all depends on where you and your children are. If you're outdoors or in a non-smoking public place, the adult should move on. If you're in a bar or restaurant (that allows smoking), you should be moving your children without comment (since you would have put them in a smoking environment to begin with).

I think it would be common sense for people to know not to smoke around children. Whether cigarettes or pot.

He was right next to us.

Completely agree. Common sense is don't take your kids where smoking is allowed.

Re: Ganja around my children
Smoking is technically not allowed in public areas in Negril. So what now?

Re: Ganja around my children
I honestly don’t understand some of these responses. How hard is it to just move away if you’re clearly next to a preschooler and kindergartner? So smokers right to get high trump the safety of children? Really???

Sorry you were offended. Negril Jamaica is not Disney World.

Re: Ganja around my children
The dude (no Rasta) was rude... you will find better manners at Red Dragon.

Yes I’m well aware seeing I’m married to a local for 11 years. Not the point.

Re: Ganja around my children
And, the OP still hasn't revealed where this dastardly deed occurred or other details of her misadventure.

Now I know. If one doesn't give details, others can fill in their own details.
For all I knew, she was out on the road and took a seat with her kids next to someone smoking and then expected them to move.

Re: Ganja around my children
I read all three pages and I am still confused ...Was Rasta standing somewhere smoking a spliff and you and your children walked up to him or was it the reversed? If its the latter then you have all right to tell Rasta to take a hike And secondly A Rasta is someone who has locks and is religious(goes to church)....Ninety % of these guys with Dreadlocks are simple Dreds not Rasta...

Sorry! Yes we were seated around a large table outdoors at the resort and my children and I and just a few others were there and then a couple of gentlemen (one who i assumed to be a Rasta who turned out to be my husband's neighbor, lol) came and sat close to us as did the other guy so I asked them to not light up right next to us.

Just an FYI...there's also many "bald headed" Rastas also.
