Having chicken or egg shortages in Jamaica is nothing new. Here is a news report from 2016 that called out the same problem.

The cost of raising chickens depends on the cost of chicken feed and the people's ability to afford it. There are lots of factors but when I lived in Accompong Town about 10 years ago, all my neighbors had a lot of problems. Getting chicks because of an egg shortage. Buying feed because the price was too high. Sudden gluts in an over supply of big farm raised chickens made theirs difficult to find a buyer. Inability to find freezer space to kill and freeze their chickens to sell later.
This shortage seems to have a direct relationship to the demand for beef and pork. A lesser demand means more demand for poultry.
Hard to be a small farmer in Jamaica.
