Incidentally, I took out my Jamaican phone last week, which I haven't used since November. Sure enough, it did not work even though I still had some credit on it. I took a chance and topped it up with another $5, online. After that, the phone "woke-up" and I was again able to place calls. I figured this would at least save me a trip to the Digicel store.
