    Giving Tuesday: Building a school

Here is (most of) the content of a message from Fr. John Bok, Father Jim's big brother.

Tomorrow is Giving Tuesday, your opportunity to join in a once yearly global generosity movement of giving to transform communities and the world.

Your gift to the Franciscans this year, through GIVECatholicAOC, will support our efforts to build a school in rural Jamaica led by Fr. Colin King, OFM. Fr. Colin was a special education teacher in Cincinnati, Ohio, for seven years before joining the friars. He understands the critical need to reach these children at an early age and time of development.

Plans are underway to transform a field of rocks and overgrown grass in this rural area into a modern well-equipped facility to provide 3-6 year old children with the basic foundation of education and strong moral values. The school will also ensure early childhood Catholic education remains viable moving into the future. Without this school, there are no other options. These young children would not go to school.

Well-equipped and modern in Revival means the building will be brick, there will be electricity and there will be indoor bathrooms. Lunch will also be provided which is often times the only real meal of the day for many of the children.

100 percent… yes 100 percent of the funds raised will go directly to this effort.

Fr. Colin explains more about the need for this school in this zoom interview with Ryan Lopez of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati.

We appreciate your gifts to help provide funding for this school, no matter how small or how large. This page will be open for donations until 5:00 pm Eastern time on Dec 2. If you are unable to make a gift at this time, we ask that you keep us in your prayers.

    Thank you,
Fr. John Bok, OFM, and Colleen Cushard, Co-Directors
Although the page prompts you to set up an account with them, you don't need to do so - you can donate as a guest so they don't save your address. You can donate via credit card (meaning a 3.4% fee taken by the credit card company, which you can optionally cover if you wish), or by direct bank transfer which costs 0.4% and is what I did.

FYI, they exceeded the fundraising goal, so presumably a new school is on its way. If you want to contribute to the school building project, to Father Jim's ongoing Get Kids to School program, or to St. Anthony's Kitchen soup kitchen in Negril, you can do so through www.stanthony.org. In the Comments box, specify Negril and for what your donation is intended. Usually you'll get a thank you call from Fr. John.

This is wonderful. I was in a group who raised money and helped, physically, to build the Rocky Hill School. The kids were so excited to get into the new school .
