    Green Island Happenings

Does anyone know the reason for Rhodes Hall being temporarily closed? Will it reopen again? Also, where are the army of construction workers going to stay when the Princess Resort gets built?

I was told construction on the water side will destroy the mangrove swamp there to build a beach.

I read an article to that effect as well. They can't claim to be a "green resort" if they are dredging and harming mangrove and coral.

Rhodes Hall has been closed since before the pandemic. It has been sold and will become a thousand room resort. That is in addition to all the other construction taking place Orange Bay and Green Island. From the Observer:

"On the cards for further development are close to 5,000 new rooms to include a 1,000-room hotel at Rhodes Hall, a new property at Ocean Point, and expansion of the Princess, Palladium, Sandals, and Beaches properties."

Much more of the work will be done using local labour because of all the complaints about the pre-pandemic work being done by foreign labour.

Knowing the manager of the Negril/Green Island Area Land Authority, she will be keeping close tabs on the plans for the development. They have to meet the environmental laws presently in place.

Thanks for the update. Rhodes was a true slice of paradise for me. What a shame. Seems like Green Island will also change forever.

Are they also planning on upgrading the public water system too? It already seems stressed to me.

This is really going to be an issue. So much so that the largest project has said they are designing their own system to reverse osmosis filter brackish water from wells they will be digging to provide all the water for their resort.

Yes indeed. Water is currently an issue in Green Island. For the amount of money being spent to build these behemoths, I am sure they will get water by any means necessary.
