Heads Up! 2 weeks ago we tried to buy a SIM card from Digicel in MoBay's Mega Mart.
They said they could only sell them to someone with a local ID. Lucky for us, our driver was willing to buy it for us, but they only had one (we had planned on two).
Does anyone know the current rules/situation? We are returning next month & thinking we'll have to rent or buy a phone there.:confused:
I got the same run-around from Flow store in Mega Mart a couple weeks ago. I would also like to know why we seem to have a problem at this location.
I later had no trouble at all with Digicel store in Negril (near Burger King). I simply needed to give them my unlocked iPhone and the guys started working on it without saying anything. But I did eventually have to show him my passport for ID.
MegaMart a franchise outlet for Digicel and they make most of der money at dem Digicel stores by selling phones.....
so if you not buying a phone......der not going out of der way to sell sim cards
and if der any technical problems...dem clerks tell you to call customer service......dem clerks primarily interested in selling phones
also they want to see da phone you using......so when they put in the sim card they can see if the phone is locked or not
if it is locked dem have an opportunity to sell you a Digicel cellie....a major reason why they ask to see da phone
when mi went into the Digicel store in Negril last week........they tried the let's see da phone thingy.....
mi said mi had many unlocked phones and mi don't want dem touching mi phones.......
so they just sold mi da Sim card like they have done for years and years......
just buyer beware like anything you do in Jamaica.........

When we were there last spring my husband purchased a SIM card in Negril. He had to present his passport.
That has been my experience over recent years. Apparently it is different in MoBay.Quote:

I buy a data from DIGICEL every trip no problem. Forgot my sim this time they charged me 500 for a new one. Copy of Canadian passport just for my name lol and that's it. 3000 for the 3GB data for up to 30 days. All in my name like always year after year.
Good to know! Won't do anything in mo bay. We have a friend (16 years) in NEGRIL that my husband goes to town with. He helped us set up our unlocked phone in 2015 at Digisel.They go and get haircuts and shaves at the barber shop and go play pool and have drinks together.Quote:
