What's up with air fares?, first class for less than coach

Was looking around yesterday at prices for 4 of us for Christmas/New Years this year. Coach fares were from $1000pp to $1650.
The best flight for us is usually from San Antonio to Houston on what was formerly Continental, now United. Those fares were the highest. The $1000 flights involved going through Atlanta.
Just for goofs I checked on business/first class and found them on United for $1350pp, $350 less than coach! I nabbed them and went on later and they had gone up to $2150pp, I guess because I had bought 4 of the available seats.
Was going to wait, but couldn't pass up that deal, especially since my wife has a bum knee and we spent a bunch upgrading last trip around.

I saw the same scenario with Us Airways a couple of weeks ago for August. It was actually the cheapest fare I could get, and it was first class as well.

Booked Delta a couple weeks ago for 4th July week, offered 1st class seats for coach price on the way down.

Upgraded to "prefered seats" on return trip (emergency row seats) for $35 each.

Direct from Atlanta, $520 each.

Don't you just love it! What a way to travel....first on, first off....and all the nice perks like the big seats....That happened to us once. I think there was like a $60 difference pp and it was so worth it! Have a great Holiday.

Same deal for me except I am coming from Minneapolis with a connection in Atlanta. Leaving Mobay to Atlanta i got business class and then from Atlanta to Minneapolis first class. Business/first class - samething on this flight. Crazy how they price some of these flights.
