What's up with air fares?, first class for less than coach

Booked Delta a couple weeks ago for 4th July week, offered 1st class seats for coach price on the way down.

Upgraded to "prefered seats" on return trip (emergency row seats) for $35 each.

Direct from Atlanta, $520 each.

Same deal for me except I am coming from Minneapolis with a connection in Atlanta. Leaving Mobay to Atlanta i got business class and then from Atlanta to Minneapolis first class. Business/first class - samething on this flight. Crazy how they price some of these flights.
