Re: How to hire a cellphone these days
Bought a new phone from Lime with a slew of minutes with 2 sim cards for about 2700 J in downtown Negril. A fellow I work with left for Jamaica a few days ago and I gave him the phone and told him to just top it off so he could call back to the states. Cheap and easy.

Wouldn't it be nice if someone started a business where they would ship the phones to you prior to your trip? That way you could have the phone number prior to your departure to give to friends/family and wouldn't have to hassle with finding a way to the phone store (I know you can stop along the way IF you have a private driver, but staying at Couples, that will not be happening), or waiting in any line burning up that valuable vacation time. I'm sure there are ins and outs of this to make it difficult to do, but it sure would be nice, especially since we need 2 phones this trip, one for someone flying in at a later date than us, would be nice to have that connection when he arrives at the airport.
Re: How to hire a cellphone these days
TT... just purchase a cheap phone from Digicel, get a SIM card and load up minutes. They can do all that for you at the ANY Digicel store...go online and find the cloest one to the airport if you don't want to wait until you get to Negril.
And if you need a driver call Clives...cheap cheap and they will take you anywhere you are going. They also rent phones out.
Re: How to hire a cellphone these days
when mi around mi usually have a cell phone or two for people to use while they are in Negril......

I think there may be a couple of websites that offer this, but you pay well for it (may he called a "world phone"). You can purchase or use your own unlocked cell phone, but would still need the SIM card. I may have read where you can get that online for $$$. If you travel to Jamaica regularly, it's worth the one-time effort and time to get a phone, then you can top up online when necessary to keep it active. It's too bad that there's no longer an outlet at the airport for phones and SIMS, you'd think it would be well used, but maybe not enough as its no longer there? It's not so bad going off resort to get a phone, look at it not as a chore, but a little excursion where you get to see Negril centre. Call up Linston or another recommended driver who will give you a fair price for transportation (vs the typically over-priced resort drivers).

Went twice to Digicell at the roundabout for a new sim about 2 weeks ago (forgot to top up last years) and they were out.
Our drivers both said they are always out and don't want tourists to have Ja cells.
Not sure why but just what I heard on the street...
Re: How to hire a cellphone these days
Good plan would be to get 1 from the unofficial Mayor of Negril -- Marko!! Can't go wrong there...

but if you buy a new phone from Digicel they will have a sim for you......
you can go to Sav and get a sim without buying a Digicel cellie........
