We are scheduled to arrive June 22, height of summer time. I don't think they would put a travel ban out there. I'm not worried about traveling. I'm not planning on being pregnant in the next two years or ever the the kids won't be getting pregnant in the next 2 years so.... I understand the Zika virus to affect those pregnant, their unborn babies and people planning on getting pregnant within 2 years of infection. Perhaps we will be bringing carryon after all to carry all the repellents!

UGHH! I guess we'll have to keep a closer eye on this! More reading to do for me. That and bathe morning noon an night in repellent.

Now confirmed in pregnant woman in Spain after travel to Columbia. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-35490524

Re: Use mosqito spray in all warm climates!
The experts were also very concerned with swine flu, bird flu, Y2K etc........
If you listen to all the warnings the experts give you'll live your life in a hermetically sealed bubble..

lemme share some of ''..my-thoughts..'' on this thing
if staying at a good-resort/property, the owner/operators are probably doing whatever they need to do to manage these critters
oh
oh
oh:::::::::::::>>>>>> the UP-side 'bout this particular mosquito:::::>>>> it DOES NOT travel far from it's *home* ..... dunno the exact distances,,,, for example, other mosquitos might fly from negril to mobay, but this Zika-mosquito will stay within a couple city-blocks of where it hatches
continue-ing....
moving about during the day
I wouldn't worry too much
but
as soon as that sun starts to creep toward the horizon
i would be splashing on repellent
AND
covering up
EVERY bit of exposed skin
if i was out and about
at night
and felt ONE 'squito nibble,
i'd RUN away
...leave that location
and
go to another bar, venue, where-ever

I'm no Zika expert but assuming the expert I saw on CBC news knows his stuff, he advised that these mosquitos are active and biting during the day only. His point being, use repellant during the day and don't worry about netting at night.
Can anyone confirm or deny this with any certainty?

The Aedes aegypti mosquito is PRIMARILY a day feeding insect but can also bite a night.

Re: Use mosqito spray in all warm climates!
I suppose that's why I don't have all the worry ... There are plenty of mosquito and tick borne disease in New England. It's pretty well normal! Just don't want my trip to be disrupted because of all this!

This is the conventional wisdom, and is true with dengue and chik-v. Scientists in Brazil have all but confirmed that zik-v has crossed the species barrier into common mosquitos that bite 24/7, not just the aedes aegypti. Things are looking to get pretty hairy this summer...

There is a pretty strong argument that this whole Zika scare is yet another "be afraid" ......... "we will save you" campaign and the mainstream media loves sensationalism (it sells).

I'll be sure to use bug spray and not take this on myself to counter this argument. I stay at places that have screens, and never get bit at night once in the room. I have a coil, Amazon lights, voodoo magic regimen that keeps the room skeeter free.

I certainly respect that Booger. I will also be using repellent and maybe other stuff in a well ventilated OUTDOOR environment. But people are actually talking about and WILL use noxious chemicals directly on the skin or cloths or inhale it in an INDOOR environment to avoid this supposed danger. Gotta ask yourself some serious questions before doing that.
BTW - I live in mosquito heaven (or hell). So I know a bit about combating these pests. Anything that kills them dead on the spot, is a clue ..... a BIG clue that it's likely not good of you either.
Again, no disrespect to anyone.

Up until now, it was thought the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is confined to the tropics, was solely spreading the virus. .....
But scientists at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Recife, Pernambuco State, in the northeast of the country, believe otherwise.
They say they are as little as a month away from confirming that the virus is also being carried and transmitted by the much more common Culex mosquito. (((((Which, I guess, implies that in as little as a month they might not be able to confirm it))))))))
The lead research scientist at the foundation, Constancia Ayres, told Sky News that IF her suspicions are confirmed, the implications are huge.
Hardly a ringing endorsement but IF confirmed, will certainly be a very major development and difficult to control.

Re: Use mosqito spray in all warm climates!
I did some more reading this morning, and I can't find anything else that references the claim. I even looked up the foundation that SkyNews says is making the claim, and their own website doesn't say anything about it. So... yeah, that may have been just poor information.

One thing to keep in mind is this mosquito bites during the day feeding on us and not at night like most......

Re: Use mosqito spray in all warm climates!
Okay. Skeeters and sand fleas love me. Bought a net for the bed to see if it helps ward off night bites. Will spray bathroom window screens near shower.
Used to get dozens of bites in each leg, last year I only received about ten bites. What worked last year: citronella spray over my sunscreen during the day. Flowing fashionable beach trousers at night. Deet spray on trousers during sunset to combat sand fleas.
