I don't see how a restaurant catering to the Russian palate would turn Negril into a tourist trap...lol! Plenty of Jamaican food everywhere, that will never change! Deep breaths people!

Where' the Scottish food? I want a Haggis stall!!!!!
Been coming to Negril for 30 years, never seen a square sausage or black pudding supper anywhere.
And I've never been able to buy a deep fried Mars Bar!!!
Racist I call it.
Spottycatz LOL :-). Maybe Jerk Haggis ?
I Go to.....
Brooklyn for cheesecake
Manhattan for fine dining
Harlem for soul food and fish/ chips
Bronx for Spanish food
IHOP for pancakes
Sports bar for Football/ beer/trash talking
Mom for childhood favors
And Jamaica for ........well you know.
Yes, there will still be plenty of Jamacian food everywhere( I usually go in the hills to eat authentic Jamaica food), but what's next.
I wish investors will leave Negril the way it is. I know it's going to change, because making money supersedes tradition and originality. When it becomes to much for me, I'll look elsewhere. The more I think about it, maybe I'm being selfish. God for give me.
Rob, I agree with not going to Kingston. Thats why I never went. Been to just about every Parish except Kingston. And to clarify myself, Nothing is wrong with Kingston. I just have no desire to go there since I live in a big city.
Spot on too, Gunko.
Perhaps if some of you "tourists" ventured out on the island you would see that the pasta, burgers, pizza, etc. are not so available there either. MissAnna doesn't seem to be wanting radical changes to everyone else's diet so why do people ridicule her simply pointing out to Jamaican business people that Russians spend money too?
Jamaican's are enterprising people and will pick up on where money is coming from and will eventually cater to those needs anyways. She is just trying to help the process along a likkle.
Peace and Guidance
True! Usually after about a week in Negril, while I LOVE the food, I long for a good burger. Thank God there are now good places to get a good burger (and pizza) in Negril. No different than other folks craving their native foods.
I bet Mrs Anna the travel agent BOOKS these vacations and therefore Profits form the bookings. Negril doesnt need the Russians, the Russians need Negril so ya know deal with it. I find the statement to be very Bully type. I spend money there also, lots but I dont make demands...
so why do people ridicule her simply pointing out to Jamaican business people that Russians spend money too?
So if we disagree were are ridiculing ?
How well I remember my first trip to Paris walking around in the early morning desperately asking locals for a restaurant with "cafe Americain". I don't recall anyone suggesting I would change Parisian culture forever or that I stay home if I don't want teeny tiny expresso.
We should not forget that Negril is a tourist destination. When we are there we are tourists. Happy tourists=more tourists=more $ and jobs for Jamaica.
There actually was a Scottish restaurant in Negril for a while - called Hallzer's. It was run by Scots Al. Here is a Negril Today page I posted for them back in November 2002:
http://www.realnegril.com/beingees/nn181102.htm
And there was no problem, the restaurant didnt turn Negril in Vegas or Disneyland... (grin)
Stoli on Ice @ Treehouse - fresh local vegetables are always Ac
Available
I like food - all kinds of food - I like variety - I like having choices while I frequent Negril. Seastar had perogies for awhile - I miss them ......
The good thing about this thread is that it made me google Russian recipes - would you believe it - pasta - chicken - beef - seafood !!
I think I just might try one tonight!
http://www.russianfoods.com/en/category/recipes/
And for another blast from the past, the Hot Diggity Dog Restaurant catering to the American palate didnt cause much of change in Negril back in 1999.... (grin)
http://www.realnegril.com/beingees/nn260499.htm
Rob, by the looks of it, the "Scottish" place was a big success. What happened to it?
One of the owner's passed away - that kinda "took the wind out of the sails" for Scots Al - he still posts here every once and a while...
I can't believe I missed this thread.
I post on a flyers message board.
Last night.
"No more Russian mercenaries ever again". As a result if Ilya Bryzgalov being terrible.
Carry on.
I'm somewhat surprised to learn Russians crave their veggies. Besides cabbage carrots and potatoes I don't see a lot of Vegetables in their cuisine. Am going to work in Poland for 2 weeks tonight (hope to make it back for the boardie bash!) and I don't expect many greens. They do have Mcdonalds though. Hope the Russians find out about callaloo!
Hey Miss Anna, nice to see you on the board again!
I have seen the newspaper articles about more Russian visitors coming to Jamaica. Your food suggestions are very simple, really; and if just a few places decide to pick up on it, cool.
Jamaican chefs could do wonders with potato cabbage sour cream and jerk spices. Just look at Jamaican -Italian cooking
Except for a hole in the owners' wallet! LMAO!!!!
I am going to start a Ukranian Cookshack in Negril.....Perogys, Blintzes, Borscht, and Olivye! Pickled Lionfish, boiled cabbage with caraway seeds, mashed turnips with butter and mustard! And ice cold VODKA! Not that grain based swill, but real potato vodka!
And knysh as well. Instead of the patty guy...we could have the knysh guy....
Alfred's serves steamed vegetables with their meals. The veggies vary but there's usually carrots, cabbage, and some greens. They have the worlds best mashed potatoes most nights as well. Be sure to try the mashed pumpkin when it's offered.
One of my favorite meals is the Chicken Stroganoff at Kuyaba. Russians probably prefer Beef Stroganoff but chicken is a great substitute.
I see a smart and creative restaurant owner who will come with some type of Jam/Russian fusion cuisine....and yes, have some cold vodka..I see nothing wrong with that-theres PLENTY of cookshops in and around negril to get the real local deal...I'm sure theres plenty of you that longed for a good ole burger, pizza or order american style breakfast-or american style anything (instead of Jam style) Your no different than Russians who want for something from their region...
Don't forget that not everyone in Negril is there as a visitor/tourist. People who live there year round get tired of the same restaurant and menu options and gladly are willing to patronize new places if the food tastes good, no matter what country of origin. Jamaicans too are willing to try new foods or twists on the same items eaten day after day. There is always room for something new in town. If there wasn't, Negril would still be the same little fishing village it once was, with simplicity the mainstay of the day, and those who have been coming long enough (even just a few years) know how that is no longer the case.
great about da Russians and anyone else that is visiting Negril....never can have enuff vistors......
wi do have some nice choices for dinning in Negril....it's not all rice and peas and fish and chicken etc........lol
wi really do have some nice choices when it comes to German entrees......and Indian........
of course Seafood is the one of major draws......Lobsters, Crabs and Fish.......afterall Negril is known for being a fishermon village
it's all good........so where do mi go for Russian food?
Cool Runnings, Marko
I just hope the Russian tourists heading to Negril, are not like the ones I have run across in Cuba. :)
I was just in Negril for 11 days and not once did I have rice and peas (not that I don't like it ....but) I prefer mashed potatoes and veggies and every place I Had dinner (with the exception of the jerk chicken drums) I had mashed potatoes.....I just asked for them and it was no problem.....same with the veggies.....whatever hotel they are staying at if they ask for vodka to be iced at the beginning...trust me the bar tender will have it for them for the rest of the vacation......It would be a good idea to talk to the hotel owners (since you are organizing this - or seem to be) and request it for your guests. I have found that most people bend over backwards to help if they know about it....I think it is wonderful that you have arranged this......hope everyone enjoys their stay....BTW I had the opportunity to live in Moscow for 6 mos back in 2000.....and with the exception of Canadian Bagel on Tervoskaia/Yamskaia I couldn't find much Canadian food in Moscow, or mexican, english, or scottish LOL.... and few signs in English (only Cryllic alphabet)....passed museums for six mos and never knew what they were ...you might want to speak to the tourist board in Moscow about that
(just a little joke)
Ms. Diana (Hot Diggity Dog) and I will be down April 30th. I miss that likkle hot do stand! Great memories!
Maybe put Russian dressing on the tables..
This is a great idea. Diversity in international cuisine with the foods that are already grown on the island, keeps everybody happy. The tourists bring in the money and there is no reason why their needs/wants should not be catered. I'm Canadian of Polish descent, love to cook, my kid is currently attending culinary school, my mother cooks, bakes and brines all kinds of fish, cabbage, pickles. I've often wondered if this would be a good venture for us, since my future plans include living in Jamaica. Most certainly I'd be willing to discuss this with someone who is passionate about developing this vodka & pierogie menu in Negril.
Random thoughts:
1. Once you have had vodka from the freezer, you will never go back.
2. When I returned home (to the USA) from my first trip to Negril, my biggest complaint was that I couldn't find decent Jamaican food around here.
3. I'm guessing the Russians won't be reading the threads on Negril.com that discuss how to make your favorite Jamaican dishes at home.
4. After honeymooning in Alcapulco for 11 days (many years ago), I could not wait to get back home and eat something other than Mexican food. That did not prevent me from wanting to travel out of the country again.
The reason I don't have a Russian restaurant in my hometown is UMM because it would not be profitable, other wise a wise investor would have it? Just because "one" person says it,doe's not make it legitimate. I'm still pissed I can't find pigs in a blanket with cabbage on the beach ya know?
Fred, you're but one man. Think along the lines of 449 others (to match Miss Anna's numbers) - all 450 of you desiring a hot dog in a bun with sauerkraut/cabbage. Take time and look on the beach for someone willing to offer this one little item on their menu. Foreign made hot dogs and buns easily purchased at the Mega Mart in MoBay, homemade sauerkraut easy to make with local ingredients. I guarantee that if each of you ordered just one of your pigs in a blanket during your time in Negril, and half the group stopped in multiple times during your ten day stay, that you'll find more than one little spot willing to whip them up for you and your group. You may need to bring the recipe for home made kraut with you to explain (and taste test) but that shouldn't be too hard I would think. Granted, this item may only be available during the few months of the year when other pig-in-lanket-with-cabbage minded people book stays in Negril, but then again, if that's when there is money to be made on this food item vs other times of the year, it's a win-win situation for the buyer and the seller, don't you think?
O/K so what are the numbers of Oriental visitors who want Chow Mein? What are the numbers of Polish people who want knockwurst? What are the number of Scandanavians who want cheese fondue? Tell one of Annies rich Russian pals who have SOOOO much money to UM buy a place in Negril and make it Russian. (funny,i get hammered for a towell on a chair but this arrogant request is SO politically correct?)
Fred, I know nothing of statistics. The Chinese food is good at the restaurant next to the Cotton Tree Hotel on the west end road. In 2009, knockwurst was found in Negril (http://jamaica-gleaner.com/gleaner/2...uto/auto2.html) - bet you it's still there someplace and that the German Bar on the west end road would help source it out for you if they didn't have it on the menu. Cheese fondue? I had a lovely meal of it and some great conversation over a wonderful glass of wine with Mr. Grizzle, the owner of Charela. I don't truly remember if it was on their menu or I mentioned I was craving a dinner of cheese, bread, fruit and wine but I do know he brought it out to me and it was superb. Miss Anna actually mentioned such simple items - other than sour cream, I saw nothing in her list that would not be on hand in any of the larger (not AI) resort/hotel restaurant kitchens anyway. The difference might simply be in the preparation of the ingredients needed for a particular dish.
No one is asking that you patronize a restaurant serving a Russian dish on their menu if there is something about this that really sets you off. You will still find all the foods in Negril that you have enjoyed on your past visits there.
I have no idea what the reference to "towell on a chair" is to. I have no clue on that one, but would be willing to give it a try. Typically, I like to eat something first then give a guess as to the ingredients but if you want to spill the beans and tell me what it's made of, I'd still be willing to sit over a bowl or plate of it and enjoy what Negril has to offer all of us.
I expect if there are enough requests for russian food, somebody will add it to there menu.
When iam in Jamaica i eat Jamaican food. Thats what i want. I certainly cant get it back here.
Can you say "politically correct?" I can.....Is there Jerk in Moscow?
Wow it's like I woke up from a nap and the Cold War is back on!? For goodness sake, the woman made a suggestion. Lots of people make suggestions on this board. If they were credible, a business might have followed up...or not! It's not as though the woman asked us to start or stop eating Jamaican food....or pizzas...or cheeseburgers and fries or.....
Politically correct? Maybe sensible, curious and respectful. Enjoy our own choices...there are plenty to go around.
