Funny you mention grilled cheese sandwiches - when I first asked for one here in Negril back in 1985 - I got a very puzzled look from the chef, but he did eventually bring me a sandwich with the cheese grilled, the bread wasnt grilled, just the cheese - which had to have been quite a challange..... it would seem to me that us North Americans got that placed on many a menu in town.... (grin)
Negril.com - For the vacation that never ends!
Well, this is a difficult post to respond to. Business folks might want to accommodate the folks who have the bucks to visit. My husband spends months in Pattya each year and folks from Russia very much visit there, and spent money. Catering to certain tastes seems like a way that places either need to do or not.....depending on what their business plan is. For us we love Jamaican food. We would never go Italian in Negril, though I am sure there are many places that serve great food and pizza. For us, I cook. I am Italian and I don't go to Jamaica to eat Italian. I ate Italian in Rome, here at home, in Jersey I don't eat Italian if I can help it. A week, good god, deal, or go somewhere else where they have watered down versions of food you are used to having. I cannot stand all inclusive places that have international cuisine. Enjoy the local cuisine, it is wonderful. If you don't want what you usually have at home......stay home.....
We once went to a resort in the Dominican Republic that seemed to cater to European tastes, we hated the place. Not that we wanted hamburgers and French fries. But come on....eat what you want at home and enjoy a change of pace wherever you go.
I was wondering....is there a breakdown of each nationality that visits the island?? I was thinking that someone somewhere might keep track....and I was only wondering this because it would seem, and this is only my observation, that the more of one certain or two certain nationalities visit a destination, the more that their 'mark' with respect to food might be left on the locals as the locals attempt to cater to them and entice them back... the suggestion of Russian food is interesting and should they become a big part of tourism to the island, then wouldn't it be in the best interests of the economy both local and national, to cater to them also....it won't make much of a difference on what is already on offer, all our Jamaican/Itialian/Ital/German/ favs will still be around...just wouldn't be expecting the local jerk barrel to be dishing out cabbage, lol

There is nothing new about someone wanting something familiar.
How many threads have we seen that start something like:
"My husband will only drink Bud. Where can I find it in Negril?"
This may be the most ignorant comment in Negril.com history. And really... The comment that burgers are for Americans and pasta is for Italians borders on ignorant. I guess as soon as the hotels realize I am an American of German descent, with a Jewish wife that it should be Wiener schnitzel and gefelltie fish all around.
Nothing wrong with a little versatility....with that being said...I hope to see Corn Dog Beach vendors in the future..and maybe some fried pickles? KIDDING! I'll save that for weekends in Missouri!

I just wish people would quit trying to change Jamaica (Negril). It is what it is and that is why we love it so. Is not Disneyland,Vegas, Russia, CANADA! or the U.S leave it alone please before you turn it into a tourist trap like everything else!
