I know how to use the multi-quote feature, but felt it was more personal to address each person directly.
And the glass bottom and fisherman's boats are "docked" by the bridge everyday and they need to get into the water on a daily basis. The rumors about the river water are just that - rumors with no basis in fact....
Just saying if the rumors would true. Then it would smell ****ty. Pun intended.
Why??? Does algae grow very close to the beach at the Riu Club???????? I don't see any algae growth anywhere but there.....
My wife and I first noticed it on Saturday. For a minute I wondered as it moved toward us and then into our swimming area at Beach House Villas. I remembered earlier posts from Negril.com... saw the leaves and grass in the water and told my wife it was river water. Tea colored as also happens in Florida. Locals in Fort Meyers explained the tea water when we were there visiting.
We walked down the beach getting far enough ahead of it to swim in the clear water. Just our preference. The change in the wind is what I believe brought it to shore.
Next day (The big day everyone is talking about) we swam and could see the dark band out farther in the sea. Sure enough as soon as the wind came up it brought it in. This time (Sunday) It worked it's way all the way down to couples swept away before I quit watching. As we walked and swam ahead now and then people were saying everything from oil spill to sewage. I would laugh and explain it was river water and to look at the vegetation in the water. For everyone's information there was no smell. Not even a rotten leaf smell. Just ruined the pretty color temporarily from that pretty blue to Tea color. I would think this adds nutrient's that the sea life need to survive.
Much unlike the plastic bottles Styrofoam containers, Bottle caps and crap we leave along the beach which as visitors that we can do something about. For me I will take mother natures dirt over mans any day. After visiting for the last 10 days I wish there was something I could do to shine a light on litter and get others involved in picking up (It starts with US) and maybe even a recycling program going in Jamaica. What about that?????

So, in Negril they treat waste water much the same way we do in our first-world countries. There is no raw sewage in the Negril river.

Thank you Rob for this & your other responses. I've been telling people this for years but the sewage rumor never seems to die. Surprised it got so far down the beach. I heard it rained a lot when I left. It's common where I stay @ the north end of the beach. Most summers the river "comes in" maybe 2X while I'm there (4+ weeks). Last summer it was very rainy & the river "came in" 5-6X a week. If people could just think of it as tea, they wouldn't get so freaked out about it. It always clears up. No big deal.Quote:
