Good news Capt. Thanks for sharing
Woo hoo! That's good news!
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
THAT is gonna mash-up some-somebody's wedding plan eh na tru
Good question. They were getting married at Grand Palladium in Lucea.
great news news I was bout to explain my Jetski paradox. I enjopy snorkling off the beach and usually if I am outside the ropes its not very far , but here is the pardox, when I,m out there and i hear one i always stand up and make myself as visable as possible, Problem with that is now they think I want to rent so here they come closer every time unless its someone whos finally sick of me saying hell no lol. Its always the Jamaicans who are renting them that are in close like that, I have seen plenty of idiot tourist on em but they are ususally way out unless they are coming back in to the beach where they left from. I think they should not solicit to ppl out swimming and just solicit on the beach , because as someone said earlier that when they are out there trying to drum up business they are usually not looking forward. I think it could help a bit but certainly needs a permanant solution. As much as i hate those things I know alot of ppl like to ride em and not all are idiots and I certainly don't want to see the Jamaicans loose their livelyhood . I think now they will take a good look at inhancing some regulations that may help make it safer, at least I hope so, Well thats my 2 cents and if we dont get stranded tomm do to that storm moving into Chicago tomm we should be there Sunday.
Good news! It's sad that someone had to die before anything was done, but hopefully the ban will become permanent and that will be the last death caused by the JetSkis in Negril.
All quiet on the beach now but it's early.
Informative on-site reporting, Yvonne; thanks!
I understand and have witnessed how some of the jet skis operate in Negril. I do think they have to find a happy medium to resolve the problem though. This is also the lively hood for some folks!
You're welcome. A little more on the accident... new info after talking to someone on the beach earlier. The jetski operator who hit the swimmer was NOT hotdogging at the time. He had gone over to that area to help some tourists who were having trouble/were stalled on their jetski. After helping them he turned around to head back to the beach so he was not flying by mindlessly. He's a young man who was scared & shocked at what had happened. The young man went from being a good samaritan to causing the death of a tourist in a matter of seconds. So sad all around. No new news on the family of the tourist who died. I think something like this was bound to happen eventually but it didn't happen the way most - myself included - seemed to think it would have played out.
Thanks Yvonne for the update. Poor fella, really sounds like an accident for sure now, not reckless driving. Keeping all involved in my thoughts
Good news for some, bad for others.
My excitement over the ban...was soon mellowed by the info about the jet ski-er...so sad for him.
the paper is reporting that the suspect was in court two weeks ago --- source cited

Such a tragic situation all around. It's very scary when you're swimming underwater and hear the jet ski's coming close. Sadly, something like this had to happen for authorities to take a look at the lack of safety precautions.
I was out on Long Bay Beach #2 this morning and I saw a jet ski out. So much for a ban eh.
I love riding the jet skis. Look forward to enjoying them each trip. Banning wave runners at the beach would be foolish.
My guess is that if there is a ban now it will be lifted shortly with regulations that will be difficult to enforce unfortunately. That's my speculation. Hopefully operators will abide if in fact the ban is lifted and they are able to operate the PWC's. I don't ride them but many do and banning there use would impact a lot of beach business. Having visited for many years I know the nuisance they can be. I remember when there were no PWC's, back when they dropped and picked up parasailers off the platform in front of Treehouse. Always interesting watching that exchange. It's nice having memories of Negril back when we first started visiting.
Soon come can't come soon enough!
Only saw 2 jetskis yesterday (together, at the same time & place) & the marine patrol was on them in a heartbeat. Obviously not everyone got the news on the ban or chose to risk ignoring it.
More info. Everyone has a different piece of information because they saw a piece of what happened. It literally is like putting a lot of puzzle pieces together. Kind of reminds me of a lesson I used when I was teaching. I'd hold up a magazine & one side of the room would see the cover, the other side saw the back. They both saw the same thing but what they saw was different depending on their perspective, POV, how much attention they were paying, etc. That said...
My sources are not idle beach chat (saw that implied elsewhere) but from tourists who were there & involved. I'm not one to put info out there unless I'm sure it's reliable. The person who told me about the jetski driver helping someone moments before... traveling w/ one of the women who was doing CPR & was right there. I had also met - prior to the incident - the young woman who was translating for the wife; continued to talk w/ her until she left. Only yesterday afternoon did I learn the jetski driver was cited for bad behavior on a jetski recently & that he's older older than I was previously told. So... scared, OK but be a man & stay. A young guy running away, I get. A grown man... not cool. It turns out BEFORE he helped the other jetski he had been trying to sell rides to the man who was killed & his wife & they told him no. Even though they were snorkeling, he should have still been aware that they were there. (An aside... I totally agree NOBODY in the water should be solicited for jetski rides... beach only.)
Talking yesterday w/ one of the other women who performed CPR, she was pretty sure the blow to the head caused a severe neck injury that would have caused death if drowning didn't. Seems he was in the water for a while before anyone went to pull him in. His wife had just gone up to order lunch & while she was gone he was hit. Someone eventually went out to get him & a boat pitched just as they were almost to shore. Only when he was on shore did someone remove his snorkel mask. So... not beach chat, speculation, rumor, just bits & pieces of facts when I get them.
Don't know what else I'll hear over time but I only consider first hand info reliable. Even if this guy wasn't hotdogging at the time, he easily could have been since it seems to be the norm for him, probably for most of the jetski guys.
Rough seas tore the swim marker line loose @ the Beach Club yesterday... collapsed to almost half size but got fixed quickly.
it a wonder how anyone can make a living with these things..they hardly last the season and sit idle 9 months of the slow season...
You just have to keep them tuned up and out of the cold weather. They can last several years if took care of properly.
Am curious whether the jet ski's are still banned. Wouldn't mind them if they'd only go slow before they hit open water.
Other than the 2 the first day of the ban, no jetskis out there. Nice & peaceful! Marine authority out on patrol.
Yesterday afternoon I saw a glass bottom boat bringing a boat load of passengers to shore. There was a couple swimming outside of the ropes, pretty much situated in the direct path the boat would have taken to get to shore. The boat guide was standing at the front of the boat blowing a very loud whistle to alert the swimmers of his approach. I liked the whistle touch!
Saw 2 jetskis again yesterday & wondered what that was about. Everyone knows about the ban by now. Looked like tourists & at least one of the 2 (again, together at the same time & area) got too close to swim areas. I could see that, even from a distance.
