I was looking at booking a trip this summer and the flight prices are up 170%. Is anyone else seeing this from their market?
I was just checking airfare about an hour ago and thinking I'd be better off driving to Atlanta and flying! Kinda steep pricing.
We paid around $500 last year and this year around $800.
For us - GRR - $ 600 is the new $ 450. This April is $150 more each than last April. You gotta do what you gotta do : )!
Don't look at prices months out, booking 90 days out seems to be my sweet spot. I've always come in April and September for 350ish flights from Boston or providence.....paid almost that for this high season reach.
Hey Eco, how is it flying out of providence? We're flying out of there for the 1st time this year...usually do JFK..where do you connect through?
JamaGinger where are you flying from? Also may be too soon. Think they should go down, they need to sell tickets.
Angel flying from Nashville. I would not be booking this far out normally. I have a flight I need to change for a trip which was scheduled for a couple of weeks from now which I can't now make. I was going to rebook, while I was changing it. I guess I will just have them issue the credit rather than rebooking now. Surely, prices will go down. I am used to paying around $500 - $525. For the same flights right now, they are showing at $800. That's crazy.
It's a small airport with cheap parking and no traffic=I love it. Park at the extended parking not owned by the airport and google for a 20% off coupon. We connect through MCO...Orlando. Worcester MA is also offering daily JetBlue flights to Florida depending on where you are in CT.
Eco, thanks for the parking tip. We have been to the airport to pick people up before, just never flew out of there...got a good deal on a flight and it's closer than JFK so all's good :)
Good to know about Worcester, I think providence is closer from where we are in CT, but I'll keep it in mind.
I don't know how you can do better than the JFK airport with the new Jet Blue terminal and Many non-stop flights to choose from? Also the Jet Blue terminal has like 30 agents to get in the airport.
Man,I yearn for the days of Air Jamica out of Newark airport.I got into MoBay at 11AM!!!!!! On the beach by 1PM!
As airlines merge, the price of tickets go up.
Our Air Tran flight from BWI is up $80 this April from last April. Miss the days that I used to get free flights on Air Jamaica from my Delta Skymiles and really didn't need that many either. (heavy sigh). But, I was poorer then, so feel fortunate that I can still afford my trips.
Sun Country 3/26-4/2 is a Wed-Wed flight. Actually DROPPED $100 in the past 3 weeks. Pays to hunt, wait, compare and set your "PULL THE TRIGGER" and hold off prices. It is GREAT to score a deal but painful to wait too long to find price jump or a sold out flight. Obvious, but keeping travel dates a tad flexible if you can, is a nice way to find your best deal too.
We have also discovered that MANY hotels are willing to work a deal with you directly below advertised rates. It is great for them to avoid booking company fees, get you in the door and YOU help mitigate some of the higher airfare prices that way. Some may even throw in spiffs like phone and/or transfers, No guarantees but I was surprised to find this to be the case simply by asking in the past couple of years that I put some effort into it. A few places we thought were out of reach, came down to make for some very good value propositions. With a little "asking for the deal", you can save money or better yet, extend a stay with the same budget.
Best wishes.
I have found the best airfares booking 4-6 weeks out
I was attempting to book for April but its very expensive. I will wait...
Airlines are feeling the billions lost in all the canceled flights from this horrid winter.
I'm sure airlines are feeling the pain. Although I have no sympathy for them due to their profit margins.
I've been waiting for 2 months for a refund from AA for a seat I rebooked and can't get anyone to answer my email in a timely fashion in the department that handles the refunds.
By profit margin I'm assuming you mean extremely low profit margin?

I just booked two round trip tickets from Minneapolis for $220 total........plus 32 A+ credits for Airtran. I think the retail price was $1150.
If the flights are high make sure you shop around. I use http://www.google.com/flights to shop. They have a feature now where you can put in your location and destination, click on the departure date and at the bottom you can select the number of days you want to go and if you can go for a few days longer or shorter and then the chart shows the prices. Pretty handy if you are flexible with the dates.
I put my dates in again and its way cheaper to book two, one way tickets.

What airline for the one way??
US Airways, second cheapest was jetblue
Sometimes flying in or out of Kingston can save $$ if you want to work a south coast/blue mountains or Ochi into your trip.
I haven't used google flights, hille141. I've used many of the others. Thanks for the suggestion. Is it just me or would it be nice if one of these sites gave you the option to select a few of your favorite flights and notify you when they are within a certain price range? I have certain flights on Delta, Airtran, US Airways, and American that I know I want to fly. The thing I don't like is that I will get a notification that the flight is in the range and go to the site to check it out. I then see that it is an overnight flight? I don't care how cheap it is, I am not doing an overnight flight from Nashville. Wish some programmer would add that feature!!
Two one-way flights are cheaper? Let me check that out!
I'm booking for late June, early July, but that won't happen until sometime in May...
I've found that flights from DFW to MBJ are much more affordable then than now...
That's based on years of travel from DFW...
Dallas folks won't realize any savings based on Southwest/AirTrans
new schedule until Nov 14th(Wright Amendment), at the earliest...
Hoping other airlines will feel the SW bite and start to compete! Hold off for the Summer, if you can.
The 1st Summer Airfare "War" hasn't really started yet... :)

As a former travel agent that would be a Big surprise.Usually it is the opposite. I have actually booke a round trip I didn't need because it is cheaper than a 1 way. Then I take the unused tkt,pay the penalty but still have some value for the unused tkt to exchange in the future.
I used to sit in my office and watch the agents Throw Away the unused tkt because of the term "non-refundable",,yes,they are non refundable but ??? If you have a roundtrip ticket that cost say $600..you use one way so that's a $300 leftover. You get a $100 penalty on that tkt but you STILL have a $200 credit for that unused tkt???????
Would this work for you maybe? I don't have any experience with them but it might be worth a shot.

Thank you for the information
I book one way tickets all the time to Jamaica and find better pricing that way vs. a round trip ticket. Been doing this for a couple of years. Plus, you have a lot more options time-wise and I end up with first class tickets as well for not much more than a coach ticket if you factor in luggage fees, etc.
hille141 - thanks for the graphic on airline profit margin. Very enlightening, I didn't know that. Although an article I read said profit was very good last year, they are constantly one accident or terrorism event away from economic disaster. Thanks for the information.
No problem. Most people don't realize how little profits are made in the airline industry as of late. Now you know why the seats get smaller, bags cost $20+ each way, and snacks are $5. With more and more low cost carriers (Jet Blue, Southwest, Airtran, Spirit) the big boys are under a lot of pricing pressure. The Southwest/Airtran merger should be done later this year and that might help people out flying into MBJ.
