Has to be at least 10 feet wide. I'm talking about the beach directly in front of the bar and seating area. I have never seen the beach so wide there or in front of mariposa and Tonys hut.

Yup, when I was there in December I thought the beach was especially wide but then when I came back in March it was even wider. It will change again not doubt but so glad its wide for now.
Love it! Noticed it a couple of weeks ago. You have plenty of area to walk in front of the restaurant - instead of having to swim - just like back in the good old days. Please Beach/Sand Gods - let it stick around for my August trip!
And ill be right down the beach from you, girl......:):)
As I posted originally back about 2 years ago, as an interesting side note, a global map showing the actual world sea level from 1993 to 2010 taken from satellite data was released earlier in 2012. This study is the first of its kind and shows that Jamaica has actually seen a sea level decrease for that 17 year time period. (Please note the light and darker blue colors surrounding the Negril - this denotes about a 1-3 mm decrease in the sea level)

I am sure all those numerous storms we had in mid 2000's (that one year they ran out of names!??!) led to more than its share of the "erosion" stories did that occurred back then at the Treehouse and any other properties being talked about. The whole beach was different at that time and has taken time to return.
But out of curiosity, should something really be called "erosion" if it can come back?
Can things "un-erode"? Or would that be like something "un-rusting" once that something has become rusted and ruined? (grin)
If it can "un-erode", did it actually "erode" in the first place? Or just get misplaced and put back?
More food for thought...
Gosh Rob you and your science are ruining my "Beach/Sand God Theory"... I guess next your going to tell me that my baseball team wining or losing has nothing to do with whether I am wearing my jersey or not! (FYI -they do win when I wear my jersey!)
Buzz Kill! LOL!

I too find this fascinating. I first went to Negril in the mid 90s and remember how wide the beach was then. The way I have always gauged the beach was how far out in the water that restaurant was at NTH. Just last June, I walked down that stretch of beach a few different days and always had to come up onto the NTH property, walk up to the restaurant area by the pool, and then back down to the beach to get past it without wading into fairly deep water by going in front.

Last week at Treehouse
I give up. Sorry for the orientation. Any hints ?
dash are you drinking?:):)
In the year 2000, I met with the Director of the Centre of Marine Sciences at the Treehouse and we discussed this very topic. Particularly, how Negril's Long Beach has experienced an increase in erosion, especially the northern part of the beach ... something that was not evident before 1990 (based on a long-term study). I know I have pictures from that day at the Treehouse in my archives somewhere. I'll see if I can dig them up.
That you for the response, in dynamic beach ecosystems, erosion is not a permanent thing. The sand gets repositioned and then can be restored by nature.
I feel that most people think of beach erosion as a one-way event. Not enough is mentioned about deposition or accretion. Erosion is not permanent.
And with that first of its kind study that shows the sea level DECREASE around Negril along with the fact that accretion can and does occur, it should not be a surprise to anyone that the beach at the Tree House and other areas is increasing.
But I think when people hear "erosion" they think more of the "rusting" concept than accretion bringing back what eroded...

Ow I kinked my neck!!!
Ha Ha Sassy.
Does anyone remember when there used to be hammocks both covered and uncovered on the beach in front of the Treehouse? The beach at that time was probably twice as wide as it is now and you couldn't see the pool for plants and trees. I'm talking mid to late 80's.
Puff,
The reason you probably couldnt see the pool for the plants and trees is that the pool was not built until the early 90's... (grin)
I first stayed there in '85 and there was beach and trees in the area where the pool now stands.
And yes, those hammocks were nice... as are the swinging chairs...
Treehouse has always been a wonderful place to stay, and many first timers from the '80s had their first stay at the Treehouse.
A big up to Gail and of course, the unforgettable Jimmy Jackson!
Better yet ... wear a St Louis Cardinals bikini top for good luck !!!
December 2013...there had been some kind of high pressure surge.
