We snorkel every day while there, never been sick at all.
Where do you snorkle?
By sickness what do you mean? Stomach thing? Sometimes when going to jamaica or say Mexico you come into contact with little bugs your immune system simply isn't used to,I carry bactrim for these types of ailments and usually one dose clears anything right up,if that's the issue, you can probably get something of that sort over the counter at the pharmacy,I usually use the one on the 2nd floor right near the round a bout
Thanks for the info. We enjoy Negril and plan to go every year. Just want to see if we can keep this from happening. Sucks to loose a day, especially when days are staggered. Please keep the ideas coming!
Oh yes the stomach, both ends to be be graphic.
Did you all fly on the same plane?
Cap
No 3 different planes. The only common denominator is the snorkeling, suck up water and next day, toast. The same thing for 2 years.
Did you all snorkel at the same place?
How many people?
Cap
All use the masks/snorkle on the boat? I know most people do, but I just can't. Bring my own or don't snorkel.
Same location, our own snorkels, drinking and cooking with bottled water 1/2 way through this trip. Snorkeled the rocks and the beach and each location provided the same results, the next day. Can't say for sure but maybe the river gives up more than the sea can handle.
Lol, your last post is sacralidge on this board, The river is NEVER to be blamed. Earlier this year we where there when the water was brown all the way up past Rondel vlg. and the ppl that know it all claimed that it wasn't sewage from the treatment plant near the golf course. Yet every lake beach i have ever been to on the Great Lakes when it rained heavily and the rivers overflowed into them where almost always closed for swimming due to high bacteria counts so I would def. feel that it could be highly possible the river could be the source of your ailment. Has it rained there heavily recently? I hope you feel better.
Where specifically were you snorkeling?
Some people we met last year said the salt water is a natural laxative. Can't speak for the other end of the problem
Sorry to hear about this, glad to know your group feels better now. Hundreds if not thousands of visitors snorkel everyday. In all the years this board has been in operation (since 1997) nothing like this has ever been reported from snorkeling.
For a single day illness to happen two years in a row to an entire group seems to be a odd thing. But since you were together as a group, other possible causes could be sun poisoning issues, mishandled food issues, booze issues or even a flu that anyone in the group may have brought with them. The common sharing of a spliff can make everyone sick if just one person has the flu. Even if you dont partake, you can still pass the flu through other means.
And since the gag reflex is automatic, for each of the snorkelers to actually ingest enough saltwater, which is not the tastiest thing in the world, would be rather rare occurrence unless the group is rather small and inexperienced.
Too much fresh fruit, fruit juice, booze, beer, spicy food, in any and all combinations can cause this "disruption in the force". Most people "giv'er hell" the first few days of a trip, then start to relax into the island life.
From my experience, peaks and valleys are not good. Better off doing things at a steady pace. That is how we came up with these words of wisdom - "Can't say you drank all day unless you start first thing in the morning". That is why us Wisconsin people have a bloody mary BEFORE breakfast. No peaks and valleys that way ............... slow and steady ! !
Remember - DRINK WISCONSINBLY

Don't need a hoodie in JA and the "bottle pocket" too narrow for a Red Stripe, but it gives you an idea on our creative thinking
We came home sick one year to the point where my husband saw a doctor who said it was likely from eating something. We definitely "Eat Wisconsinably" so I always bring immodium with!
We are staying 3 weeks this November, hope it's event free. Looking forward to putting some heat in the bones.
I used to get sick every trip for a day or 2. I think it was my body just not being used to a bacteria or something that is present in Jamaica but not in Pennsylvania. I never get sick anymore though. - Dr. Flip
Dr. Flip I believe your illness on day two is called alcohol poisoning!
That could be it. We are coming from the top of the world, those same bugs must not be able the cold.
You could all be having a reaction to not quite ripe Akee. It happened to me when I first started going to JA. With me it doesn't matter if it's ripe or not. Makes me sick every time. After figuring that out I have not had a problem since. I love the taste but for me it's the forbidden fruit. See below..
The unripened or inedible portions of the fruit contain the toxins hypoglycin A and hypoglycin B. Hypoglycin A is found in both the seeds and the arils, while hypoglycin B is found only in the seeds.[4] Hypoglycin is converted in the body to methylene cyclopropyl acetic acid (MCPA). Hypoglycin and MCPA are both toxic. MCPA inhibits several enzymes involved in the breakdown of acyl CoA compounds. Hypoglycin binds irreversibly to coenzyme A, carnitine and carnitine acyltransferases I and II[10] reducing their bioavailability and consequently inhibiting beta oxidation of fatty acids. Beta oxidation normally provides the body with ATP, NADH, and acetyl CoA which is used to supplement the energy produced by glycolysis. Glucose stores are consequently depleted leading to hypoglycemia.[11] Clinically, this condition is called Jamaican vomiting sickness. These effects occur only when the unripe fruit is consumed
And this is why Jamaican children are taught before they can walk to never touch an uncooked ackee. Every parent and adult takes this very seriously and proper handling and cooking is taught to all Jamaicans at an early age. It is also re-taught again in school. This is also why importing fresh ackee is very difficult if not impossible in parts of the world.
Noproblem, since this hits you ripe or unripe, I would assume this is an allergic reaction of some kind and has nothing to do with Hypoglycin found only in the unripe ackee.
To all - If you buy ackee in any restaurant, you can rest assured that it is fully ripe. The cook would become sick if not. Ackee is not the Jamaican National Fruit for no reason and ackee and saltfish is the National Dish. As a matter of fact, ackee and codfish is ranked number 2 in the world by National Geographic survey of national dishes...
Very interesting..... I have never heard of this here before!
Not the ackee for me and the beer intake is not a whole lot different. Flu like symptoms that lasts for a day or so. This will be our 3 time to Negril, we do cook most of our meals. We love it there, just trying to figure it out. Might be a coincidence.
