China man shop,b 4 roundabout coming fro west end ocean side,no passport needed;)
Any cambio or bank in Negril will give you a fair exchange rate.
Do not exchange money at the airport...they offer the worst rates.
Your hotel will exchange but will not offer a rate as good as a cambio or bank.
You could also bring your Atm card and use the bank machines here for a small fee to acquire Jamaican currency as needed.
We like to use Boardwalk Village. Its just as you come into Negril so very convenient to hit before you get to hotel.
Just don't use the "change buddy?" guy who is usually camped out in front of the cambio at the roundabout. He'll try to burn you if he can. One time I had him get right up in my face and yell "hey f**k you mon" when I refused to use him (cambio was closed). I had already been burned by him once, even though it wasn't for much $, wasn't going to try my luck again.
I read someone on another forum recommending those guys, said they were running some line about needing USD to purchase vehicles from the States to ship over. I thought wow, bet that was one expensive exchange while they were listening to that tale!
Stay away from all money changers you will get burned even if its for $10. When going to an atm take your money out in ja your atm cards usually give the best rate. I've been living off atms for 2 years but now have residency and have my pension sent direct to Scotiabank.
We use the Cambio across from Time Square, good rates and no hassles outside.
For over a decade I've used the FX Trader. It used to be in the Hi-Lo but is now in a separate store next door. Have also used the ATM there with good result.
In 25 years I have never exchanged Dollars for J...............No need to..........

Kwhizz yes your right you can use U.S currency everywhere but then your at the mercy of whomever your dealing with as far as what exchange rate their going to use. It will never be the same as a cambio or atm. Right now most places will only give you 100 to one when the real exchange rate is 117 to one.
I use the cambio beside the hilo. I was using the cambio across from times square but last Feb the three times I used it, I was shorted 500 J each time. The first time I did not count it out and lost it, thought I could trust this venue, and the next two times I did count. After that third time I was done.
I was shorted 1000ja at the cambio by scotia bank when I confronted the lady she got rude. Never went back. I never left the window counted it in front of her she indisted I must have tricked her or something like that.
I recently discovered the NCB ATM next to Hi-Lo on our last trip. This is now my preferred ATM, as I find the charges are the lowest (at least for my card) and there is usually no hassle in that shopping plaza. The only inconvenience is that I believe the maximum withdrawal is about $25000J. Other folks on here have told me that you can get around this limitation by make multiple withdrawals.
We usually pair it up with a stop at Hi-Lo on our way to the hotel, so the location is convenient as well.
30K is the limit per transaction

The few times I changed money at the Cambio in town I always felt rushed and didn't like doing my money business 'in public' where the space is tight and people in line are just feet away. When HiLo put in a little booth that was better. I don't know what its like in the new Cambio location in the shopping plaza next to HiLo.
I like the ATMs (unless they give instructions in a loud volume). If you travel locally or abroad (or at home have to use certain ATMs to avoid fees) I like the Schwab Investor Checking Account Debit Card as they don't charge fees, they rebate any fees you are charged, and they don't charge foreign transaction fees. They also give excellent customer service.
I go to the store next to the Digicel store..they give ongoing rate..and have cheapest beer around..kill two birds with one stone
Thanks everyone for the great advice. What I don't like about ATMs as my debit card only allows $200/day and then the transaction fees on each tranasaction. I would think exchange money at a Cambios or Bank would be cheaper
The Cambio by the HiLo has private cubicles for conducting your transactions.
Can someone tell me where HiLo is located? I have looked at the negril map and can't seem to find. Thanks
Sunshine Village Plaza
We stopped at the cambio at Boardwalk, and it moved locations last Friday. I'm not sure where it is now located.
Then we stopped at FX Trader and exchanged at a hair under 117J per US $.

Bob
