Didn't think we would be able to re-trace many of our steps this month while spending two wonderful weeks in Negril. After all this was my 65th birthday trip (Dec 2). I was wrong. We managed quite nicely. The wonderful warmth of the island weather from January 5th thru the 19th made our arthritis symptoms much less intense and allowed up to walk miles; yes miles; with only the occasional pain-killer and the aid of my cane and new Payless-purchased 26 Canadian dollar runners. (Don't forget; I'm a tight-wad Canadian) I'm hoping I can keep feeling O.K. till Spring, when walking in these parts will be easier without the snow, slush and ice; although today we were a few degrees above freezing. The sidewalk on the morass side of Norman Manley Blvd. was a pleasure to use. There were even a few spots to stop and rest a bit along that stretch, including a wooden bamboo bench that looked just like the one "Smith 744" had built at his yard in Lucea. Several cab drivers were resting in that shady spot too, and they urged us to use the bench and "Take the shade" for a while. Walking from Sun Beach to Hammond's Bakery was pretty easy with a couple of 5 minute sit downs, and from there; the Sunshine Plaza was a breeze. Then a cab to Seastar. Never paid more than 700 dollars for that ride. Mostly 600. Another twice accomplished walk was from Seastar down the lane to the West End Road and on to the Out of Town Bakery. No rest stops. Really easier than ever. On the walk back though we stopped at Sir D's for a beer. Walking in Negril is a great way to see what you can't see from the window of a cab or bus. Beach walks were pretty pleasant too. We made it from Sun Beach to the Norman Manley Sea Park area (now closed) and exited near the Craft Market. Lots of exercise; little pain and wonderful warmth. Thank you Negril; for being so kind in the weather department. Linda and I spent about 90 minutes at a time in the warm waters at Sun Beach. Linda telling me the small waves were better for her back than a Jaccuzi. Thankfully, the waves were a little bigger when passing catamarans or far-off freighters passed by. It was our best ever visit!
