    Felt good to walk

Didn't think we would be able to re-trace many of our steps this month while spending two wonderful weeks in Negril. After all this was my 65th birthday trip (Dec 2). I was wrong. We managed quite nicely. The wonderful warmth of the island weather from January 5th thru the 19th made our arthritis symptoms much less intense and allowed up to walk miles; yes miles; with only the occasional pain-killer and the aid of my cane and new Payless-purchased 26 Canadian dollar runners. (Don't forget; I'm a tight-wad Canadian) I'm hoping I can keep feeling O.K. till Spring, when walking in these parts will be easier without the snow, slush and ice; although today we were a few degrees above freezing. The sidewalk on the morass side of Norman Manley Blvd. was a pleasure to use. There were even a few spots to stop and rest a bit along that stretch, including a wooden bamboo bench that looked just like the one "Smith 744" had built at his yard in Lucea. Several cab drivers were resting in that shady spot too, and they urged us to use the bench and "Take the shade" for a while. Walking from Sun Beach to Hammond's Bakery was pretty easy with a couple of 5 minute sit downs, and from there; the Sunshine Plaza was a breeze. Then a cab to Seastar. Never paid more than 700 dollars for that ride. Mostly 600. Another twice accomplished walk was from Seastar down the lane to the West End Road and on to the Out of Town Bakery. No rest stops. Really easier than ever. On the walk back though we stopped at Sir D's for a beer. Walking in Negril is a great way to see what you can't see from the window of a cab or bus. Beach walks were pretty pleasant too. We made it from Sun Beach to the Norman Manley Sea Park area (now closed) and exited near the Craft Market. Lots of exercise; little pain and wonderful warmth. Thank you Negril; for being so kind in the weather department. Linda and I spent about 90 minutes at a time in the warm waters at Sun Beach. Linda telling me the small waves were better for her back than a Jaccuzi. Thankfully, the waves were a little bigger when passing catamarans or far-off freighters passed by. It was our best ever visit!

Big frank, thank you for posting. I'm happy to hear it was a healing trip as well. I think we can all appreciate the rejuvenation we feel with the warmth and the water. I wish you an early spring!!

Bravo, Big Frank! So glad that you were able to enjoy one of the greatest pleasures of Negril - which is simply walking around and enjoying the surroundings. We were in Negril 2 weeks ago, as well, and we made it a point to walk the new sidewalk a couple times. Aside from the occasional hustler, it was a great experience.

BTW, I believe we spotted you at Sun Beach on Sunday Jan 17th. The wife and I were laying in a couple of loungers and sand gravity was kicking in when I saw you and Linda zip through the crowd and make your way to the water's edge. I believe you turned left and started on another beach walk. I guess that's just a testament to your active vacation!

Big_frank, two of the many highlights from our trip last June...

    1) floating on the gentle waves off of Coco La Palm, just rolling in the surf. Spent hours floating and doing absolutely nothing!
    2) Diane's son Keith joined me on my walk abouts around Negril. Interesting just walking around and observing the runnings of Negril....

    Thanks for the memories!

I think the walking made me a very very happy traveler too. But I was just thinking this morning; I'm stiff and chilled and my knee hurts, and as Linda said this morning when we went out in the cold to shop "This isn't Jamaica".

Right on Frank. I love to walk all over Negril and appreciate the freedom as you do in really checking the sights out. I always notice new stuff here and there and likely would not have noticed it in a cab.

I wish we had more time in Negril (doesn't everyone?). We didn't walk any of the lanes on the west end (except Seastar Lane). I was a bit surprised walking past the hotel, that the power lines were hanging so low; I could have reached up and touched them. The road isn't paved beyond Seastar (after all Chris paid for the paving to be done anyway), and there are some nicely kept properties beyond Seastar. I wish I had time to stop at the juice bar place where I've enjoyed iced Beet Root juice in the past. Maybe next time. Always something to look forward to when it comes to Negril.

Seastar Lane is something great, and Chris no doubt has a lot to do with that. I have been down most lanes in the West End, and nothing comes close to Seastar Lane. I feel safe walking that lane at anytime of the day or night.
