Sand Flea Bites Appearing Several Days Later???

Hi - my family of 4 returned from a fabulous vacation in Negril on Saturday. We visited a beach at the far West End last Wednesday at sunset, and everyone was immediately attacked by an army of sand fleas. Well, we jumped off that beach as fast as we could. The next day, one daughter was covered by swollen bites on her thighs and legs (she had sat on the beach). The rest of us had no noticeable bites at all. We had no other issues at all with bugs of any kind during our entire stay except for this one time. Our time and CocolaPalm, 7 Mile Beach and around Negril were literally bug free. We came back to So. Cal. on Saturday. Suddenly yesterday afternoon about 50 extremely itchy small red spots appeared on my ankles and lower legs. That is 6 days after our encounter with the sand fleas. Last night my other daughter, who did not know this had happened to me, texted me a pic of her legs multiple bites on her legs and ankles had appeared, even more than me. She was freaked out, thinking we had brought bugs home with us. My husband has had no such reaction, but he never reacts to any type of bites. I read that sometimes the sand fleas lay their eggs under the skin when they bite (oh my!) - might this have happened to us? Do we need to do anything now?

Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

It happened to me once a long time ago. The thing is that I didn't wash all of my things when I got home. Some were unused so I thought I could wear them. Apparently there must have been sand in them thus sand flies. Now I wash EVERYTHING in my suitcases when I get home and have never had that problem again. Perhaps this happened to your daughter as well.

No worries I live year round in sw florida the sand fleas,no seeums can be horrible particularly close to sunset. The bites often don't show up til after fact and yes they itch and leave pinpoint red dots all where the feasted. The will go away just try not to itch em.

...was the beach near Canoe, MiYard or some such place(s) ... ??..

am having a HARD-time figure-ing out where there's a true-true & proper *beach* on WestEnd.

I can't speak from experience in Jamaica, but we go camping in the FL Keys every year, and the no-see-ums and mosquitoes love me. The no-see-ums tend to bite like crazy from the knees down, and then nothing... until a couple of days later when the welts appear on me. Sometimes I'll have new welts appear days after getting home. I don't think I've ever had a 6 day delay though- that's a new one on me. Benadryl cream for the itch?

Get to a Dr, could be hookworm...itch like hell! I now use Bugguard by avon...sunscreen and insect repellent especially on my feet and ankles.

That's the Sunset Bar located in the far West End...there's no beach in this location. It's closer to the renamed Moondance property...not near the Westender which is still a bit further yet.

Ya Canadacan, I know the property very well...just never thought of it as a beach.
The thin sand layer extends into the sharp cliff rock which then extends to the sea. We have sand in our yard...but never thought it to be a beach...though that would be nice. Maybe others would call it a beach...

We have been over this for years and this harmful advice is always removed. Poisoning people is not a solution. The manufacturers warn against your advice. You know why your post was removed. Right on the box of "your solution" it WARNS not for human usage. It was removed because it is harmful to humans.

listen to rob if you want I talked to my doctor about it.gave her all the information about what I was doing for the last 24 years and she said go for it but don't put them on tight or it will cause a bad rash.i would think a doctor would know more about this than rob.he knows it and so do I.sorry rob but this time I got the information from a doctor.

Just an update - I put clear nail polish on each bite (at the advise of someone who seemed to know lots more than I did) and it seems to be working! The itching has gone down lots, and the bites are less inflamed and appear to be starting to fade. IDK, but I was told that the nail polish also kills any eggs that may be in there (ugh....) Since I haven't gotten any new bites, it's really really good news that we don't seem to have brought any of those buggers home with us. By the way, all of your helpful (and uniquely entertaining) comments are much appreciated - really!

I hope your problem is actually sand fleas and not bedbugs. I once got burned at a hotel with bedbugs (thankfully not in Jamaica) that took a couple days for bites to appear. Glad I'm always careful not to bring anything home.

hi Rob we having settling here in south west florida , been getting bit off and on by those dam no see-ums , I hope at some point I get somewhat immune to em esp. living down here, im not on a beach but on a canal and have a pool even tho I have no seeum screening they find their way in and seem to love the lanai as much as we do lol hope all is well with you and lisa

I agree with Frankk, your bites sound a bit suspicious.

An Army PA told me that bedbugs leave 3 bites in an area. They called bedbugs bites the holy trinity. If you don't have 3 bites near one another it prolly isn't bedbugs. I came back one year and they kept appearing. He took one look and said nope, not bedbugs.

Agree with MilwaukeeMike... My experience was many bites with three together in a straight line. Some people are more sensitive to them than others. I still have scars from two months ago.

This can happen in very nice hotels- I always check out the bedbug register websites (http://registry.bedbugs.net/) and Never unpack anything inside my home.

Hope none of you have to deal with these.
