Thought this might interest some of you. When I was in St. Elizabeth late last year, people were passing counterfeit bills at a gas station in Maggotty. Perhaps there is a problem with that bill. Interesting read. http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/lates...nge--5000-note
This has nothing to do with a gas station getting counterfeit notes and everything to do with increasing the bottom line. In the article it mentions the flack they received in December trying to increase check cashing fees to $1385...
I changed some money in Montego Bay at a Cambio last year.
The lady counted out a few bills and stopped.
I said "whoa Nellie, I should be getting a lot more money"???
Whats up???
I could not understand her accent.
She was Chinese, speaking with Jamaican accent.
But, she was saying:
"these are $5 thousand Bills, $5 Thousand Bills!!
I should have paid closer attention.
My fault.
I did not even know there were $5 thousand Bills made.
Oh, please give me $1 thousand bills instead, those are Waaaay toooo big for me.
She did ex-change them with a smile.
well for making some purchases here the $5,000 bills is almost a must as having a lot of the $1,000 are tuff to carry around.....
not to mention you can't always fit dem all in your wallet.....and believe it or not......some places only accept cash here....
especially a place that has a good deal on sumthin you might want......and they only take cash......yah mon
FYI - the ATM's only spit out $1,000J notes.....and the Cambio beside HiLo rarely have the $5,000J bills

When the $5000 came out, I remember businesses having signs saying that they would not accept them as they had no change.
Now a $5000 won't even cover basic groceries...
yeah $5,000J doesn't get you a lot of groceries here.....sometimes $10,000J doesn't either.....Quote:

I can understand that when buying vittles/ "groceries".

Same here in USA, I hate carrying hundred $ bills or even $50's.
It is the same size as a $1.00.

Cashed $500 US at the cambio at Bourbon last month, they only had 500J notes, talk about a big stack!

I find this (charging to break a $5000 bill into smaller bills) rather ironic, considering that when I used the Negril ScotiaBank ATM for a withdrawal, what I received were mostly $5,000 bills. I used a different ATM in Black River, made a larger withdrawal and received NO $5,000's. I'll be avoiding ScotiaBank in the future.Quote:
