I'll be in Negril in a few days and this reach I'd like to try snorkling.
Any suggestions/names/contact info for a nice relaxing snorkle adventure would be most appreciated!

I'm sure all the glass bottom boats are good, but we use Capt. Clark by Kuyaba (his nephew Adrian wearing the red Sun Dance Tours T shirt does a lot of the booking) or Capt. Eveready by Roots Bamboo.
We enjoyed Captain Moses, by Alfreds.
we didn't go with captain moses to booby cay last week, but we talked to him and his crew while on the cay and they were great.
i would definitely do an excursion with them next time!
here's his facebook page:

Hi! We hired Famous Vincent Glass Bottom Boat during our February trip. 876-473-6910 They hang out by the cliffs but will motor over to pick you up wherever you're staying. Vincent's knowledgeable and friendly son was our captain and guide and got into the water with us to lead us around and point things out to us. He also provided snorkels, masks and fins and gave us bread to feed the fish. It was an amazing adventure! Here's a short video we made--I bought a DBPower EX5000 action camera (cheap--$65!!) just for this trip. Best money I've ever spent. Here's a link to a short clip from the video. Have fun!! https://www.facebook.com/ernie.osbor...2061948487307/
Nice video JaBinky. I was fortunate enough to swim with this guy out there a few years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BSj57Q4s4y4
Vincent is great, he was $20US/person last Feb at least. He has equipment but we always make room in our luggage for our own masks and snorkels (I also bring my fins...) - I don't like sharing this stuff and really like to know that our gear will fit (not leak) and perform perfectly. Its good to have your own equipment as you may also want to swim around off of your resort - not much close by for most of the beach, but you can see some cool stuff (or just float endlessly and become one with the sea) off of most cliff resorts.
Dive shops have the best gear but even the stuff at Costco or Walmart-type stores are way better than the equipment in Negril.
Bread is not good for fish. Bread contains yeast and when eaten by fish, it will expand and can cause constipation for most fish. The most resilient fish will survive however others will disappear as they suffer and the predators take them.
The utilization of knowledge is power!
Hey Rob, You might have your first paragraph in quotes as you lifted most of it from an article on oceancrusaders.com. Knowledge is power, and respect for original authorship is a good thing, too.
But next time I snorkeling I think I'll skip the bread, for sure.
Yes, I found this info OceanCrusaders.org, not oceancrusaders.com (link below). And I took them at their word in the final sentence:
"So if you see someone feeding bread to fish, please so us all a favour and ask them to stop doing it. Even better explain why."
I explained why as they asked.
They didn't ask for credit, just that the info gets out there to protect the fish. That is admirable and there is no copyright on the site, but I do admit my error in not crediting them as the source. Here is the full link. It is about the Great Barrier Reef, but the same guide goes for all "fish" destinations.

I think its a bad idea to feed any wild animal although I have gotten barracudas and eels to turn towards me by flashing something shiny at them! Creepiest thing I've seen is feeding fish from those pressurized cheese squirters.
Thank you everyone for the suggestions! Can't wait!!!
Roz, Hubs & I really like using Captain Quality and his crew. Top notch equipment and experience. Located just north of Sea Splash and next to Negril Palms. Fair rates, great time!
Just saw Captain Quality the other day. He says HI to everyone on Negril.com!
Instead of taking a boat to the reef for a short trip at $25 a head, you might consider taking a taxi to Xtabi, buying a $5 beer, and snorkeling off the cliffs there. Depending on how many are in your group, it may be a less expensive route to go and a much longer excursion, depending on how long you want to stay. Xtabi also has a fresh water shower to rinse off after coming out of the water.
Is the Canoe Bar a decent spot to snorkel or am I way off?
I agree. Some people will recommend Canoe (aka Mary's Bay) as a good spot for snorkeling, but the few times I went all I saw was a lot of sea grass and hidden sea urchins. Maybe I didn't go out far enough. We usually stay on the cliffs, so decent snorkeling is just a few steps away (Home Sweet Home, has a nice coral canyon right off the ladder). To get any better, you have to go to the reef.
Thanks to Rob and TAH for bringing up the harm that bread can do. I would prefer that people don't feed the fish at all because that trains them to look to humans for their food rather than foraging as they naturally should. I have always seen plenty without feeding the fish.
I keep wondering what happened to "Take only photographs, leave only footprints".
this morning the ocean is flat like a pancake.....perfect for snorkel...but just about every morning it's like this
mi go in snorkeling every morning at PeWees......and doesn't cost a dime or beer or drink....
mi either snorkel up to Xtabi or SamSara.....or down to the Spa or Home Sweet Home....
mi snorkel anywhere from an hour to almost 2 hours......mi don't use fins as it's not much of a workout if mi do
Elvis at PeWees serves the best breakfast on the Cliffs and it inexpensive.....
Cool Runnings, Marko
