Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Even though the weather is nice in Wisconsin right now - I am planning for our New Years trip already! Due to a job change we MUST have reliable internet access this year and I remember someone telling me they had a digicel modem and/or air card last year? I would appreciate if someone could tell me how that works and what the best way to do it would be as we can't rely on the hotel internet this time. We would be willing to buy the phone or whatever is needed if that is the only way to do it. As you can tell, we are not techies to make the understatement of the year:)

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Yes. Digi has a modem and I think they also have a UBS one (not sure though). I was using Claro but Digi bought them out and my hotel had YiFi so I didn't need one last trip. I am sure that there are people on here who will know for sure and am surprised that no one has answered you as yet.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
I suspect I haven't had alot of feedback because not many people care about the WIFI while there:) I know I never did until this year when my husband must be available for his job - which he needs to keep so I can keep coming back:)

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
I can fill you in on the details during/after my upcoming trip (leaving Monday 6/11). I always had free wifi at my hotel but they - unwisely - went to an expensive per week system. I'll be getting the Digicel USB set up for my summer stay.
BTW... this really isn't my first post. I've been on N.com since almost day one but my computer messed up somehow & my password no longer worked & restoring it also didn't work. Got no help so I have a new name.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Not trying to hijack the thread....
So the Beach Club (Mariners) now has fee based Wifi? And if so, do you know if the Condos office has free wifi?
Back on topic, I do remember Rob replying to someone's question about the Digicel wifi, and if I recall he had good things to say about it.

I also see a post from you on that thread too Yvonne. We will be staying with Jean in the condos in July. So if you see a white couple with a crazy little (brown) 5 year old pickney say high.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Plongdin,
Not being techies, this is can be a bit complicated. It depends on where you are staying. There is 4G access from Digicel, but that has limited coverage areas. The Claro option is now unavailable, only pre-existing Claro clients have access to the old 3G network. They are not accepting new subscribers at this point.
If you can say where you are staying, I would be able to provide you more detailed information. There may be a decent existing wifi at the hotel.
Here is the link to the Digicel direct information in case you would like to check out some basic prices:

Yvonne,
Sorry to hear you had problems.
I did not receive any email from you asking for help. When you have any problems, the forum/board software suggests that you contact me. I could have easily reset your password. It only takes a few seconds.

Rob... I did send an e-mail but got no response. I may not have had the correct e-mail address to get it sent directly to you. I tried!! Think I know the log out problem too. I was almost finished w/ typing my post here earlier when a brown out wiped out all I'd written. (Probably 2 words short of being finished.) Ran an errand & came back. I was logged out even though I'm supposed to be remembered. Lots of brown outs lately & I had to log in to a shopping site I sometimes use. Other sites... not affected. Anyway, if you could restore my Yvonne board name & delete this one (use the same password), I'd appreciate it. ykreedfla@aol.com I can probably still use Yvonne on my netbook since I pretty much only use it in Negril & the name & password are saved. Now I'm afraid it'll be totally messed up.
Back to the wifi @ the Beach Club. No more free wifi in the lobby... $34 a week but it works in your room. Too pricey for a long stay like I do. The Condos still have free wifi at the office. I used that in February but prefer not to in the summer... humid, bugs, etc. I've been spoiled by sitting on the sofa under the ceiling fan in the lobby. Now I'll be more spoiled by being able to have wifi in my room. I'm out of here @ 5:15 Monday a.m. (for a 9 a.m. flight, live 20 minutes from the airport).

Yvonne,
Please check your email, I have reset your password. I am not sure what email address you used, but to contact me, there is a Contact Us link at the bottom of each page on the board. You can use that to contact me. Also, when you click on my name in any post I make, there is an option to Private Message me, so that would work as well.
Please let me know if you need anything else.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
No e-mail from you. I didn't know about the PM message option. I looked everywhere for the contact us link... at the TOP of the page, in FAQs, etc. Thought it was strange that there was none. I go the the bottom of the page pretty much never... sigh. I spent 2-3 says trying to get my name back & finally gave up.
Will I need to change my password since YvonneNegril has the same one I use for message boards? That's where I think my netbook will then be messed up since that hasn't been affected by the brown outs. At least now I know what's causing me to be logged out of sites instead of just being able to automatically be signed on.
Going to check my education message board now. That's another one I've had to keep logging into lately. Sheesh!

Thanks for the reply. In my opinion that's too pricey period! Have a safe trip and maybe we'll see you in July!
Also, Plongdin, I hope you get your wifi issue figured out. Have a great trip!

Too pricey, period, is right. That's why I sat outside for 2 weeks. Looking forward to being spoiled by access in my room. See you in July. Ask Jean or Deandra at NBCC who I am.
Rob... I'm back in!

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Thanks everyone for the help and I agree that is too pricey but my husband would say NO the price is not too high for him to have internet when he needs it:) Thanks Rob - we are staying at Xtabi so hopefully we are in a good area. I would appreciate any help you or anyone else can give me.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
If you are staying at Xtabi you can get free wifi right there by bar, patio.

That pretty much describes me, too. My co-workers used to call me Amish Girl at work (before I retired). LOL Here's my experience...
Arrived in Negril late afternoon last Monday so no trip to town to change $$, shop, etc. Off I go Tuesday a.m. Already topped up my phone via the internet, set up my international calling plan, now to get my wireless set up. No USB modems until 2 p.m. I expected as much as friends warned me months ago. Please save one for me... I'll be back first thing Wed. I was & they did. I bring my netbook to Negril, purchased it specifically for my travels here. The gentleman who works at Digicel was not only helping me install & set up, he was waiting on all the other customers, too. The 2 women working there were off to parts unknown. Omar, I believe the man's name is, was a wiz... selling phone credit, setting up people's phone w/ international plans, showing phones, helping me, etc. I was impressed. Not sure what the women were supposed to do because it was pretty much nothing during the 2 almost hours I was there.
Had some problem w/ the USB modem... defective. A new one solved that problem. Because I already have an account w/ Digicel, registration was pretty easy... the wireless service connected to my existing account. The USB modem cost $3688J (42.88US), all inclusive. I planned to buy time for use after the 72 hour free use so also did that online. I'm set for my entire stay here. $3750 (43.60) I had to activate the month plan after the 72 hours but had been shown how to do it. I alctually remembered! Works well but you have to be close to/on your balcony/patio. Today is my first time on the balcony. Usually use it perched near the sliding glass doors when I get up in the a.m. Now that I have my initial investment in the USB modem, I'm good for every trip from now on. I'll top up online before I head to Negril & activate it once I'm there... just like my phone.
I hope this helps.

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
Thanks so much Yvonne - I am going to try to get a phone and set it up before we go this time. Never needed to before as Alfred always took care of that for us - we will miss him so much! I really appreciate the info!

Re: Can I rent an air card or modem for internet access?
You're quite welcome. Once I got back home I realized the wireless device automatically disabled my wireless networks connection. Not being a techie, I had to e-mail my computer guy to find out how to fix it. All fine now. Negril is pretty much the only time I use my netbook so will have to remember that for my next trip. Never got more than 3 bars but, as I believe Rob stated earlier, your location in Negril will determine how good your connection will be. 3 bars worked fine.
