LOL, Booger.....that seriously made me laugh out loud!

No film? ;)
I have been waiting to see just what people think how you pronounce the name Accompong as I have at least 3 or 4 neighbors who were born and raised in Accompong Town and their family line goes back to before the Maroon War and they all pronounce it slightly differently.
Generally, the majority of the town's residents pronounce it (short A) (accent on COM) and (pong [like ping pong]) or aCOMpong phonetically speaking. Some say it like (strong "Ack") (com) (pong) phonetically ACcompong.
As well meaning as any Jamaican can be (as they all have a variety of strong opinions either right or wrong), it is hard to think that a random person in Negril would know better how to pronounce it more than the direct decendants of Accompong and residents of the town.

Sorry Accompong...Rob and I didn't ask Connie if she was a direct descendant or not...she was just kind enough to give her version.
So...this would bring us to the next question...how does one pronounce Negril?
We know that it isn't pronounced only one way by those born & raised in Negril. :)
so its like saying "a compound" ...only with "pong" at the end? or "ah compong"
Sorry if you took it like I was in anyway "mocking" her for this as even a "direct descendant" would only have a 50% chance or so of giving the generally accepted pronunciation as you find in Accompong Town.
As far as Negril. I believe it is pronunced Nay grill as it came from the black eel in the river. In Spanish, it is "Na" sound and not "Ne" sound. At least that is what I was told but, who knows???
Quote:
The name Negril is a shortened version of Negrillo (Spanish: Little black ones), as it was originally named by the Spanish in 1494. The name is thought by some to be a reference to the black cliffs south of the village.[citation needed] Another theory holds that because there was a vast population of black eels along Negril's coast, the Spaniards called the area Negro Eels which was shortened to Negrillo and then to Negril
In my district it's Nay grill
