With all these great pics being posted, I have a camera question. Is it safe/wise to bring a 35mm DSLR to Negril? I bought it because I love to take pictures (lots of pictures - some might say too many!). Since we've never stayed on the Cliffs before, I really want to bring it, and I'd love to get some great beach shots as well. On the "other" Negril forum, several of the posters raise issues with bringing expensive cameras :confused:. Any thoughts?
My 8th trip to the magic that is Negril is coming up in mid November, and I always bring my DSLR with no problem. You gotta bring your camera mon!

I wouldn't dare take my DSLR camera to the beach. There are 2 things that can damage a camera faster than anything. Sea water and sand. I am will not risk dropping my camera in the water or the sand. (I have never dropped my camera, but don't plan on tempting fate). My point and shoot camera is 12 megapixel and I have taken some amazing shots with it. I always have it with me in Negril!

I wouldn't think of visiting Negril without a DSLR or two plus a few lenses. I bought the cameras to take pictures, not to leave at home while I vacation.
I have seen some very "professional" looking shots from a P&S............."seen some great pool shots with a bent stick"

2nutz4travel.......I think I understand what you're saying. Some people can get touchy with their pics being taken on the beach. lol
I also take my DSLR with me and all my lenses. I also have two other cameras, a small point and shoot and a water proof. Agreed that I bought my cameras to take pictures both at home and while on vacay. A camera or anything for that matter can be stolen or damaged anywhere we go, so why would Negril or Jamaica be any different??
I used to take my old school SLR for the first few trips to Jamaica. Those shots remain my best. I stopped dragging that lumbering beast when decent point and shoot cameras came out. Now, I use a Canon S100 and I too have a waterproof case for it. Worked swell last May!
As for risk, here's a story from my first trip in 1984. We stopped at a barrel jerk spot at a residence on the West End Rd. We made absolute pigs of ourselves and they let us sit and eat in their front yard. We left and stopped at another restaurant to get some veggies to go with the salad. We ate two more meals and had dessert, too! By now we were ready to burst and drove back to our room at T-water. We no sooner got there when I realized I had left my camera and bag back at the jerk spot. I jumped back into the car and sped to the residence. IAs I got out the chef said, "Mon, you left your camera" and ran into the house to get it. I was very grateful and showed my deep repsect.
I'm not suggesting that you can leave a camera kit just anywhere and retrieve it, but I don't think Jamaica is any less safe to travel with our expensive toys than right here in the USofA.

My wife and I have trouble trying to take pics of the two of us in the room dressed for dinner. A tripod would certainly help!
I use a mini tripods. I've got a couple difrerent sizes. Makes it soooo easy to travel with. You can find them in most any retail store & are inexpensive.
I agree with the mini tripods. I now have 2 and you can get them on Ebay for about $5.
Remember, if worried about theft or damage you can put a rider at a very cheap price on your homeowner insurance. It cost me $12.00 per year.
I bought a mini tripod at the Dollar Store! I use it mostly for sunset photos by setting the timer for 2 seconds, pressing the button, re,pvomg my hand, then waiting for an absolute steady shot even set a a slow shutter speed.

Taking your DSLR is really a personal choice about whether you are comfortable traveling with expensive gear. Nothing can spoil a vacation faster than worry. Worrying about an expensive item that you brought on vacation is counter-productive to the concept of vacation. If you are going to worry about it, I would leave it at home. Not because it won't be safe (nobody can predict the future!) but because you shouldn't worry on vacation. That said, I travel with a waterproof PS that isn't exactly inexpensive. But, I don't worry about it. Same goes for your laptop/netbook, jewelry(I don't understand the need for expensive bling on vacation...), or even cash money. If it will cause you worry, leave it at home, you can surely do without it!
After over 37 years of travel and vacationing, I can honestly say that I have never been the victim of a theft. I have misplaced things, that were never to be found, but that is wholly on me. Unfortunately, I have had more than one physical encounter(not the enjoyable kind!). None in JA, though!

I have a more general question. I want to get a new point and shoot digital camera. I know nothing about them.

Here is a deal on an underwater camera that will go to a depth of 100 feet. The reviews are mixed as people cant expect to get awesome underwater shots as light is limited and then you have to deal with the motion of the ocean :rolleyes: I used this camera myself and have enjoyed it. Check my albums on this website for sample photos. You can't find a camera that will got to 100 feet for anywhere close to this price. The camera also shoots video! You do need to buy a memory card & I recommend rechargeable batteries.

nuthin wrong with the point and click cameras........they are cheap and take great pics........mi always carry two

I have taken a DSLR camera to Jamaica many times including "white" Canon glass. But I was staying all-inclusive with fairly tight security. My next trip, in 6 sleeps, I will be carrying my Canon 7D and 3 prime lenses only. I called my insurance company and they insured me for $2500 with zero deductible for $3 a month. My regular homeowners insurance would have covered it but then I would have to pay the deductible.
I'm always cautious and lock my things down but you certainly never know what will happen. The insurance gives me peace of mind. Anyway... I bought the camera so I could take it to cool places. Negril qualifies. :-)

You gotta use the easy rebate but that only takes about a couple weeks to get refunded. The store manager at my Staples went ahead and subtracted the $9.99 so I dont have to do the rebate! I thought that was pretty nice of him! :D

Hereare 3 shots from my older Canon P&S...with a zoom lens...original shot on 'rooms was taken from 25-30 ft away, it does have (Imag Stab)...taken with a resting brace no tripod.........so a cheaper camera can produce good results in my opinionAttachment 17395Attachment 17393Attachment 17394......
Tip....every camera has a tripod hole..find a loop that will screw in there..tie some string or heavy twine through the loop and let hang down by your foot......to be sure of a relative blur free shot,,step down on the string, pull the camera up,making the string taught, take your shot.....you pulling up lightly helps to "stabilize" the camera in all other directions...(try it-it works)....

The fish photo was taken about two feet below the surface at Xtabi on a partly cloudy day. The focal point of the macro is in the upper right quarter...
nice underwater shot, really looks good...
....this is about all you can expect from those "cheapo-underwater-use once"..this was taken with camera about 1ft under surface looking out to about 4 ft.....(each black dot is fish :)
this was taken about right in front of NBCC early in morning, schools like this come close in every morning, working one way then turning around the other way...(nice safe place to let the kids see the fish under water)...without going to reef...fish like this can be seen just offshore of the cliffs also, just easier from the beach...lol

either way, there is a lot to see under water.....Man has only explored 5% of the Worlds waters, and from
15.000ft and down less than 1/10 of a %...........and who knows what may wash up with a tide......my wife found a ring
in about 3ft of water off NBCC....a few years ago..the next year they gave it to her, no one ever claimed it, value is only about 100.00 US...but the finding of it....PRICELESS..lol
